Hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King, the star-studded affair honored the achievements of women of color with heartfelt performances, tributes, and special awards. This year’s honorees included Dionne Warwick (Living Legend Award), Alicia Keys (Rock Star Award), and Janelle Monáe (Young, Gifted, & Black Award). Ciara thrilled with some new moves and new material off her upcoming album One Woman Army, and was joined by Missy Elliott for “1, 2 Step.” Brandy delivered a knock-out performance of “Wildest Dreams,” and Keyshia Cole tore the house down with her new single “Trust and Believe” off her upcoming album Woman to Woman. Alicia ignited the stage with her female anthem “Girl on Fire,” while Luke James, Anthony Hamilton, and Eric Benét serenaded the ladies with “Wildflower.” “Black Girls Rock!” premieres Sunday, November 4, on BET.

If you want something, go out and get it.

@mumi, you sound ridiculous. That’s because there are different subraces with white that you claim as heritage to celebrate, such as Italian, Irish and Jewish. If you have a show about any of those ethnicities rocking, nobody will care because its just a heritage and pride thing. “White pride” however as an entire group of people is about excluding others and a declaration of supremacy as history has more than demonstrated to the world.

Ursula Reply:

@mumi, Yep. ‘Cause white people have capitalized off of minorities for centuries and statistically have more social, political, and economic power in this world – and given the history of this country and the torrid race relations that have ensued, I agree: “White Girls Rock” would make a lot of people bitchy.

This is so racist, I wonder what people would if there was a show called white women rock. One thing is fighting for equality but it is another thing to try to separate yourself so much as to try to be higher

Mrs. Hampton Reply:
October 14th, 2012 at 8:07 pm
@Natasha, This isn’t racist at all, the show is empowering for African Americans children to see that we as women don’t have to be stereotyped by white society as video whores, baby mamas, loud boisterous hoodrats and other epithets that mainstream calls black females. Before you label something as racist do your research on how many positive black female role models there are in the media. God Bless!

Natasha Reply:

@Mrs. Hampton, if you wanna be equal then treat yourself as an equal. There are more than 5 times as many white people as there are black. Of course they are going to be more of the successful ones are going to be white. Its not about white people being better but its about the fact that there is about 73 percent white Americans and 13percent black americans

@Natasha, quite honestly you are quite racist in that you would gripe so much about a show that teaches black girls to be proud of who they are as opposed to what America in particular white America has always told them about themselves since the beginning of time. The ironic part about your statement is that the only race that’s ever tried that ever declared seperation because of their supposed “supremacy” is the white race so you’re comment is just so damn ignorant in many ways. And for disclosure I am a white male so don’t try and say I’m picking on you Cus you’re white.

@Natasha, Just like I told the other person, white people have capitalized off of minorities for centuries and statistically have more social, political, and economic power in this world. You can’t be racist if you are a social minority with significantly less power than the majority. Pick up a history book, turn to the index, and look up “SLAVERY,” and “White Supremacy” That should explain a lot for you. K?

@Ursula, yo what does this do for black girls socioeconomic status? Nothing! It just makes them arrogant. When we see these girls performing at something that’s actually doing something for black girls then you can use that argument.
Don’t try to get political when you know damn well it has nothing to do with it.

@lol, it makes them arrogant??um no how about instilling pride into people that only get shown as basketball wives, video hos and baby mommas
yall are pathetic with this bytching..soon as we do something uplifting were full of ourselves, im sure you would rather us just play the stereotypical role in media

First I would like to say “Thank You”, because black woman we do rock. Until we as black woman realize how special we are, we will never get the respect we deserve. So, thank you BET for the encouragement to believe in who we are.
I would like to thank all of the artist who took out the time to let our sisters know how important we are to Alicia, you are such a strong black woman with more power than you will ever know. Kerry Washington, I love your strength. You inspire me so much. Keisha you have grown so much. I wish a lot of sisters would just listen to what the words of that song is saying I just want to thank BET for letting us see how great we are. Thank You!!!!
