Kanye West and Alicia Keys Perform at ‘12.12.12: The Concert for Sandy Relief’

Kanye West

Kanye West and Alicia Keys lent their voices to “12.12.12: The Concert for Sandy Relief” at Madison Square Garden in New York on Wednesday. Sporting a Pyrex hoodie and leather kilt, Yeezy performed over 10 songs including “Mercy,” “Clique,” “Power,” “Jesus Walks,” “All of the Lights,” “Diamonds,” “Gold Digger,” and “Runaway,” closing with “Stronger.”

“I got friends that was displaced ’cause of Hurricane Sandy that I let stay in my place so this is an emotional evening for us,” he said after “Touch the Sky.”

Looking radiant in red, Alicia Keys closed out the evening with two songs. “I’m so honored to be here with you tonight. This is for our brothers and sisters. We can become brand new,” said the New York songstress as she performed her new single “Brand New Me,” taking a moment to reflect on her city.

She continued with “No One,” encouraging everyone to put their lighters in the sky. “My city, New York City, is the most incredible city, the most resilient city,” said Alicia before taking a bow.

    Kanye i love u but this was not the place to perform clique, mercy, runaway and gold digger. He could have ditched the leather for a day.

    @carla,

    Exactly. His set list was all over the place and he didn’t perform over 10 songs. He only did snippets of each making up a 30 minute set. He would have been better off including “Through the Wire,” and “Heard Em Say” instead of “Runaway” “clique” and some of those others.

    @miles, how was he promoting his album?

    @Rob, A charity event is a place to perform songs that bring encouragement and songs that will uplift people, not songs that were the biggest hits on your album. And it looks like he dressed like that only to stir up controversy.

    what the f**k is wrong with you dumb f**ks? its a CONCERT at the end of the day so kanye will perform whatever the f**k he wants. whoever organized this event gathered artists that would appeal every type of audience around the world to get them to donate so OBVIOUSLY kanye was the choice for the ‘rap/hip hop’ category, so he’ll rap whatever the f**k he wants. and how the f**k is he promoting his album? he’s got 15 grammy’s in total and has been nominated for 4 this year so i think NOT b**ches. he’ll also wear whatever the f**k he wants because he can and its part of his performance – if you don’t like it, get the f**k off and don’t donate. dumb sh*ts. yeezy for life.

    Alicia Keys is a legend. She was the only female performer and she closed the show filled with music icons.

    Kanye West looked foolish and sounded bored.

    @Meme, I will agree that Kanye West looked foolish and bored on stage. Kanye West could had given a much better performance than that. Kanye West is still one of the top 100 greatest rappers of all time. Sometimes, I feel that rappers shouldn’t perform at major important events like The Concert for Sandy Relief because some rappers don’t look right performing with old school music legends in front of demographics who don’t always buy rappers’ music anyway. I will applaud Kanye West for caring enough to give a music performance in front of crowd where he was the only rapper to perform. Thank God, that rappers like 2 Chainz didn’t perform at The Concert for Sandy Relief, because it would make hip hop look very disgraceful.
