Mariah Carey Dishes on Nicki Minaj Feud with Barbara Walters

Mariah Carey and Barbara Walters

Mariah Carey hasn’t spoken out directly about her feud with Nicki Minaj…until now. Barbara Walters visited the pop diva at her New York apartment ahead of the January 16 premiere of “American Idol.” She opened up about her claims that the rap diva threatened violence against her, her whopping $18 million paycheck, and her family. According to Mariah, she and Nicki have settled their differences, at least for now.

“GMA” also aired some never-before-seen-footage of Mimi and Nick renewing their vows in Paris last year, as well as the couple at home with their twins, Monroe and Moroccan.

The full interview will air tonight at 11:35 p.m. EST on “Nightline.”

On her feud with Nicki Minaj: “It felt like an unsafe work environment. Anytime anybody’s reeling threats at somebody, you know, it’s not appropriate. I’m a professional. I’m not used to that type of environment.”

On feeling unsafe: “Sitting there on the road with two babies, I’m not gonna take any chances, so yeah, I did hire more security.”

On how it will affect “Idol”: “For all the drama, I hope it helps the show. I think it’s a classic, classy show and it didn’t need this.”

On her reported $18 million salary: “I think we’re in the ballpark, but I can’t even talk about these things.”

On her daughter Monroe: “I call her Miss Monroe, and that kind of dictated her personality. She’s a total diva. She’s fascinated by jewelry, chandeliers, all these things.”

On her son Moroccan: “He’s my pal. He’ll just watch movies with me. We’ve watched Shrek I don’t know how many times. We watch movies all the time together, relax. He’s more chill.”

On Nick Cannon: “He’s just as festive as I am. I’m very, very festive, and he kind of almost trumps me there.”

On Nick’s health scare last year: “It was very serious, but he’s got some great doctors who really got in there and helped him out and at this point he is doing great. He’s better than ever.”

The media can be so pathetic, the way they lay out the article and interview, first argument with Nicki, then illness wit Nic aka. Mariah is the victim. Manipulation.

Agreed. Mariah is desperately trying to play the victim card to dispel any rumor of her possibly being a diva that wanted to be the only female on the panel.

Who actually buys that? Not saying that Nicki yelling in the workplace was professional, but Mariah’s hands are not clean here. Are people forgetting over a decade of reports of Mariah Carey’s diva behaviour?

@Diego, but where the f*** are that fans that helped her buying 200 million records if Triumphant was a total flop since its birth?

And comparing an artist that has been in the industry for 15 years with a new artist that has 4 years is not fair, specially if that new artist is a rapper.

And most of the people that watch AI are watching because of the participants.

*Sighs* Mariah is trying so hard to play the victim right now, it’s just pathetic at this point. Also, what kind of half-assed journalism is Barbara doing? There are three sides to this story and she only bothers to get her friend’s side.

  10. who?

What i dont understand is that on American Idol theres been many fights and disagreements ..Simon vs Paula, Randy vs Simon, JLO vs Randy, but yet none of them seemed to react as poorly as Nicki Minaj. No matter how the argument went down, she still chose to act like a classless joke. Yes we know shes not to be “fu*ked” with, but you would think a 30 year-old-woman would carry herself with more class and dignity.

@who?, AGREED! Nicki Minaj was not professional at all. Glad Mariah Carey handled it like a lady behind closed doors (without knowing she was being recorded.) And it doesn’t matter how much press one has, or whether whose the “it” girl, Mariah Carey is making close to 18 millions for 1 season alone!? Lets not be mistaken AMERICAN IDOL knows her worth.

    [Reply]

    Oh Reply:

@who?, But this is all ONE SIDED, you people are judging an REACTION that set Nicki up for failure, Mariah could have said something that really got to Nicki, and even though Nicki was unprofessional to say she was going to physically touch her, who knows what Mariah said to her first. She obviously got under Nicki’s skin …..

    [Reply]

    who? Reply:

@Oh, obviously youre missing the point…How many times did Simon take jabs at Paula or Randy? MILLIONS. Did you see Randy or Paula react the way Nicki did? NO! Because they’re professionals! No matter who started what, there is a professional way to conduct yourself. ESPECIALLY IF YOURE 30!

    [Reply]

    Andy Reply:

@who?, but Nicki was caught in surprise, there weren’t supposed to be cameras at all and the video doesn’t show how it started. Guess it is unprofessional but it’s “unhuman” to get angry when somebody is insulting and/or disrespecting you?

    [Reply]

    who? Reply:

@Andy, LOL. She should have been professional from the time she step foot on the set till the time she left. No matter if the cameras were on or not. The fact that someone caught her behavior on camera lets us ALL know how she really is.

@who?, and what about other judges in AI?? And what about Carey that said something about her children in that video?? I guess all is professional for you except Nicki.

  11. HipHopMuse

Nicki Minaj did a whole press tour about her quarrel with Mariah Carey on the set of America Idol, which included radio interviews, editorial, and even her reality show on the E network. Nicki Minaj’s storyline is Mariah Carey. She may have thought she could of capitalize with her beef towards Mariah Carey but it affected her sales deeply, and her image. Its been two albums, and she has never had a grammy, and she goes down in history of having the worst grammy performance ever. Maybe she should spend time learning from Mariah!

    [Reply]

    Oh Reply:

@HipHopMuse, U people keep saying she has NO GRAMMY but yet shes been nominated over 4 TIMES? with only 1 Album? She hasnt been nominated for Roman Reloaded… so think again.. and Grammys dont mean anything.. Look at Diana Ross she hasn’t won her Grammy until last year … cut Nicki some slack and, Nicki has one of the best selling albums of the year so her sales aren’t Adele -Status, but she’s not a FLOP either

    [Reply]

    TJ Reply:

@HipHopMuse, 1. Nicki’s press tour was promoting her album & fragrance, barely any time was spend discussing Mariah.
    2. Her reality show was following her for the three weeks up to her tour and was about getting ready for her tour. Mariah came up briefly as the incident happened during those few weeks.
3.Nicki hasn’t tried to capitalize off the beef. It happened, it wasn’t something she planned nor was it something she wanted to or is happy happened.
    4. It didn’t affect her sales. Her perfume is doing great, her tour did great & her rerelease did good for a rerelease.
    5. It’s been 2-3 years, it doesn’t matter that she doesn’t have a Grammy yet, she has time to work towards one.
Do I agree with Nicki going off? No, but I understand. At some point someone is gonna push you past your breaking point & you’re gonna go off, all you can do is learn from it. She’s human, it happens. I also don’t agree with being so f*ckn petty that you get on national television TWICE accusing someone of making gun threats to you when you know damn well it never happened, and working overtime to break someone down because you’re bitter. If anyone is trying to capitalize off of this, it’s Mariah.

    [Reply]

    Andy Reply:

@HipHopMuse, are you dumb???? Nicki HATES to talk about the incident with Mariah, yet all the disrespectful interviewers are ALWAYS asking about that. If Nicki, instead of responding the question, would have said “I don’t wanna talk about that, next question” I’m sure you’ll run here to post comments saying “oh Nicki is so fry to talk about that, she is so fake, blah blah blah!!”

  12. Oh god why

At the end of the day Nicki shouldn’t have chucked a big sookie the way she did (we’ve all seen the footage). If she was a real professional, and if Mariah was being rude, should could’ve handled the situation alot better. Yes there is always 3 sides to a story, but Nicki is still a big baby.

    [Reply]

    PinkFriday Reply:

@Oh god why, But she did handle it better she walked off stage which was the first thing someone should do. But the producers told her to come back to her seat and she did and the old lady still kept on throwing jabs and so she got cursed the f#ck out. She deserved it.

GTFOH with this Nicki shyt. Her fans are delusional. Nicki is very sarcastic in how she talks. She just ran into to a titan, that is out of her league. She’s so used to having her way that she can’t deal with other powerful people. Mariah is way out of her league. This interview is clearly not only about Nicki. Theres something called professionalism and someone could use it. As far as the white when she wants to be that’s really ignorant. Take a look at Nicki and enough said. MC doesn’t need to be in this garbage. These so called reality shows need to stop being desperate.

At the end of the day, Nikki is a sideshow attraction. She’s not a mastermind entertainer/marketer like Madonna, she’s not natural gifted like Mariah, and even in comparison to her peers, she’s doing nothing spectacular. She arrived as Lil’ Kim a few years ago and has slowly morphed into a Missy Elliot/Lady GaGa hybrid. Say what you want about Mariah but at the end of the day, when you take away all of the smoke and mirrors, her talent is still present. It’s what got her into the industry and it’s what has kept her there. The public will only be entertained by wigs resembling Rainbow Brite blood, faux-mania, and subpar British accents for so long. If you’re not setting trends or equipped with the actual goods, you’re just a moment. And I’m thinking, that moment will be overrrrr….now.

I’ve never heard of a bad bitch with a Bozo the Clown ‘swag’ and I’ve never known a legend to have more hits on her ‘talent’ than on the charts. 3 years? Real cute. Mariah was more certified than Harvard Alumni one album in than Mr. Minaj is ’3 years’ past her due date. If you want to get out of the kiddy pool and go somewhere deep, we can.
