The day has finally come for Dawn Richard. After surviving two groups, departing Bad Boy, and releasing her acclaimed EPs Armor On and Whiteout, the former Dirty Money member forges ahead with her solo career with the release of her long-awaited debut Goldenheart.
With the album in stores and on iTunes now, Dawn celebrates the release with the short film for “’86,” directed by Eugene Lee Yang. In the powerful visuals, the leader of the Hearts pays homage to her past including Danity Kane, her childhood, and native New Orleans.
“We’re using all the things in my past that people may view as negative as a catalyst to be inspiring—to fight for something,” she explained.
Head to the front lines with Dawn as she ushers in the Goldenheart era.
Great song and the concept is fine, but it looks like one of those History Channel reenactments. I realize she doesn’t have much of a budget and has to be sensible so it’s whatever.
I know people are going to hate and criticize (their opinions can be voiced) but heart music is an acquired taste. She’s doing something different. Giving the heart behind the music. Using concepts and metaphors, and daring you to challenge yourself socially and visually. Though hard to imagine, there are those who simply don’t understand and/or don’t care. That is fine. I just hope that it stays about the music, and that neither side throws shade to the other. The heart movement is a positive one, so if someone doesn’t agree with Dawn’s work or has something negative to say, just let them, and keep it moving. In closing, this video was inspiring and intricate.
This girl really needs that Major label push i want Dawn to win so bad but her album isnt even in the top 20 on Itunes i think this will commercially not do well independently. This video was just ok to me honestly i know if Dawn had a bigger budget she would live up to her talent and she could really sell records. Lets hope a Major picks her up and gives her the deal she really deserves.
@Truth, She can be more successful (financially) with an independent deal. As long as she’s doing it for the art she should stay indie. Gather a strong core fan base then go major. Once you have those guranteed fans/backers who will support and buy you can do what you want and the label will support you. Most people might not “get” it but as long as you have fans funding your career and can keep your major label happy the sky is the limit.
I absolutely ADORE this song, but I feel like the video messed it up a little. Like, it’s not that deep. I respect her wanting to show that she has artistry but sometimes she just tries too hard. Everything doesn’t have to have a double meaning. And where’d she get the impression that she’s some sort of industry outcast??? Dawn you have a beautiful once and are really talented, but stop trying so hard to be this “deep” artist. It doesn’t feel authentic.
@YouWillDeal, It doesn’t matter if anyone has dropped this week…just to be recognized like that as independant artist is huge. And she’s #20 on all around charts…by the end of today there’s no place for her to go but UP!
Really love this video it was simple and very emotive. This is a lot better than majority of the videos out now: Clubs, strippers, booty popping. Great visual to a great album and hopefully a really good era. Dawn please stay independent and indie. Get that fan base, a major label will just make her go commercial and she will lose all her creativity and artistry.
