J. Cole on MTV’s ‘Hottest MCs’ Snub: ‘I Don’t Give a F**k’

J. Cole

MTV caused quite a stir with hip-hop fans with the release of its controversial “Hottest MCs in the Game” list. One MC who some believe should have made the cut was J. Cole. But the Roc Nation rapper is not sweating it.

During an interview with DJ Drama, Cole sounded off on his exclusion.

“Somebody’s gonna die,” he joked before getting serious. “I don’t know, but I don’t really give a fuck. It is what it is. Think about it, from what they say, it’s the past year, I’ve had a quiet year.”

However, he still believed that he deserved a spot in the top 10. “I should be on there,” he said, while adding, “I don’t give a fuck, DJ Drama. They’re fucking dead, and I’m gonna kill them.”

He agreed with a lot of the other MCs that made the list including 2 Chainz and Drake, but didn’t want to give the creators any extra shine.

“We shouldn’t talk about this anymore. They want this. Fuck these guys,” said Cole, who didn’t understand the logic behind the list.

“Future doesn’t even give a fuck about Kanye,” he said. “They don’t even interrupt each others’ lives and they’re not competing on the same level.”

Cole is currently putting the finishing touches on his sophomore album and a joint project with MTV’s newly-crowned “Hottest MC” Kendrick Lamar.

    UMMM…it can’t be a snub if you didn’t have any music b/w Feb 2012 and feb 2013.

@im me, He hasn’t had an ALBUM. He’s had plenty of music. If you knew a thing about him, you’d know that,

@Truth, he didn’t release no music in 2012 !!! think about the logistics, French Montana should be in this list, Meek and Future shouldn’t and Rocky shoul’d be top 5

Honestly I don’t even hear music from this guy… they only build hype around him because he is signed under Jay Z…

For the idiots who didn’t listen to the interview, HE WAS NOT WHINING. All he said was he didn’t give a fuck, he didn’t really put out music in the time period and he didn’t understand how MTV can put people like Future on a list with Kanye.

I agree he should have maybe had a spot on there over one of those other rappers but he sound like a sore loser.

His album doing as well as it did with little promotion and having a dedicated fanbase should speak for itself. I don’t see people in the urban community praising “started from the bottom” like we do “power trip”.

    [Reply]

    channelPink Reply:

@Speechless, But Started From The Bottom is peaked at #6 on the hot 100. So who gives a f#ck about what the “urban community praise”. Lower class people don’t buy music.

    [Reply]

    Morgan Reply:

@channelPink, “Lower class people don’t buy music.” lmfao, what sense does that make? It’s simply not true. People of all classes support good artists. You really need to do something more with your time, outside of trolling.

“Started From the Bottom” is a generic rap song, whereas “Power Trip” has a jazzy feel and is being embraced across the genres.

@channelPink, You are arguably more ignorant than you are just plain WRONG. I’m attended college & grad school with folks who are lower middle class, upper and smack dead in the middle. I have never seen any of them illegally acquire music, so you can kindly take your foolish assumptions elsewhere.

I love J. Cole but MTV is shit and has been way before anyone knew who J. Cole was. This guy has been killing rap since his early mixtape days. MTV ain’t gonna recognize someone who talks about real shit. They’re only here for materialistic, swagged out basic niggas.

    [Reply]

    channelPink Reply:

@Raj, You should know that the MTV List are about Hottest MC’s for a year in particular. They don’t have a BEST MC list. Know the difference and do your homework and then come back.

    [Reply]

    Raj Reply:

@channelPink, Considering I actually have a life outside of music and the internet, I don’t think I “should” know anything.

    Vance Reply:

@channelPink, In the tiny confines of YOUR mind, J. Cole’s socially conscious raps and his more mainstream, radio-friendly singles — Work Out, Can’t Get Enough, Nobody’s Perfect — don’t constitute him as a major factor in both categories. Your shitty opinion has been nullified.

    [Reply]

    Kalin Reply:

@channelPink, You’re rambling and you make no sense. Cole definitely deserved a spot on this list two years ago. It’s mildly acceptable now because he’s not had music out in a while but Kanye and Drake are on the list and they can definitely be called both as they have both critical and commercial success. Try again.

    That’s right Cole.

We, the people, know what it is and that’s all that matters. Not some janky ass list

Thats right King Cole! Youre the best in my book so MTV can go to ****…we know you’ll never get the props you deserve but…PowerTrip is the best rap single put out this year, Born Sinner will be epic and you’ll shut all the critics up….Yessss ColeWorld and it’ll be ColeSummer : )

    [Reply]

    channelPink Reply:

@Breeangel, “PowerTrip is the best rap single put out this year” correct but this list is about the artist who was hot in 2012. Consistently.

    Breeangel Reply:

@channelPink, Ok…i was just saying he’s already slaying 2013 when i said that..i know what he did last year…trust i know…im a Cole stan so yes i know he wasnt doing much last year…but he did put out several quality songs to keep his fanbase happy…and the little he did put out still makes him better than a few “mc’s” on that list…but i know why he’s not on the list because i know the politics of why certain rappers arent on this list : )

ermm meek mill was on the 2011 list and i don’t remember him being relevant apart from imma boss. only mtv know hoe they choose the people on the list but if you put wale, big sean, WIZ F***ING KHALIFA in the list and not j.cole the people making the list have issues IMO. But for 2012 he was almost entirely silent and didn’t deserve to be on there even tho i’m a massive fan.

    [Reply]

    Reemo Reply:

@kels, wale, big sean deserved to be on the list they had big albums, Lotus Flower Bomb got nominated for so much awards. j cole shud of been on it last year, only reason I could think is that his album werent as good as his mix tapes.. but this year idk why people are moaning, not even Cole is moaning he knows he doesnt deserve to be on the list.
