Justin Timberlake’s Album Approaches 1 Million Copies in First Week

Justin Timberlake

Break out your suit and tie. Justin Timberlake is getting ready for a big comeback on the charts. The pop superstar’s new album The 20/20 Experience is approaching sales of 900,000 copies and could possibly even hit a million by next week.

According to Billboard, Timberlake’s first album in over six years is on track to sell between 850,000 and 900,000 copies in its opening week.

There is already talk that 20/20 could top 900,000 if it performs strongly over the weekend.

Justin’s “Legends of the Summer” tourmate Jay-Z was already popping champagne. “JT x 1 million? Getting my ‘Suit and Tie’ ready for the celebration,” tweeted Hov.

“Is that the D’USSE talking? Haha! You’re out of your mind, Hov!” responded a humble J.T.

The blockbuster sales will easily give him the best-selling album of the year so far and the best-ever sales week of his solo career. His previous album, 2006′s FutureSex/LoveSounds, entered at No. 1 with 684,000.

Find out if J.T. pushes a million when official sales are announced next week.

@Speechless, Why would we be pressed? This has nothing to do with Usher’s immense talent and ability to perform, while always showcasing every ounce of his superb artistry… Chris is also very talented so this is notch for Justin but a mere irrelevancy for the connoisseurs of the field.

@UsherFan, I’ll admit Usher was at one point the biggest artist in the world, but those days are over. His last album sold 128,000 copies the first week, and JT is about to sell close to 1 million himself. To even get near 1 million in a week in 2013 is way harder than it would’ve been in 2004 (Confessions Era). I bought the 20/20 Experience myself and it’s some of the best Pop/R&B music I’ve heard in a while, definitey better than anything Usher’s put out and it doesn’t have any of that euro-pop stuff either

@JHP, bottom line is hes just now doing what usher did ages ago, and it took him to take six years off for a return to music hype builder to do it. of course usher has fizzled out, its only so long someone who releases music every other year does.

@JHP, Your actually wrong. When Confessions came out R&B was not selling and most albums were not coming close to a milli in a week unless it was hip hop. Confessions shook the game up. People still listen to Confessions like it came out last week. I doubt this album gets the same love. I read too many comments about the album grows on you, blah, blah or that some are already bored with it and doing a Kanye.

Once again another platinum album on the way and I give you much respect JT I have always been a fan since Nsync not just when you went solo. And I always will give respect to great artist which you are who can sing, dance and give great live performances. A lot of bashing and comparisons were thrown JT way on this site on other post comparing him to Robin thicke and I always say they are two different artist but both great in their own ways. But the one thing JT has is platinum albums and great albums. But again we all have our opinions and we all have our own taste in artist so I do not take it as hate as people always say. So great job JT and also Thicke is great as well but this post is for JT keep making good music and everyone stay blessed… As long as you got your suit and tie on pays respect to MJ that’s where the suit and tie swag comes from everyone…

@D.kellz, Can I keep it real for a sec? Cause ya’ll know I do. Justin magically reappears on the face of the Earth with a, poor 1st single and unoriginal style and Boom! all of a sudden he sells a million? Granted his falsetto gets these women to drop their draws at any given time but hes not as hot as he used to be and age is catching up with him fast. Who’s his demographic? Like Whitney said, ‘I need to see some receipts.’ Huh, somethings a little wrong in the water but we all know about industry politics. How you doin’?

    [Reply]

    D.kellz Reply:

@Wendy Williams, To me we all like what we like as I said in my post you may hate the song and may feel its is a lack luster single and I may like it which I do like it that is the great thing of being a fan and freedom of speech we all have different taste. And the man never fell off the face of the earth he simply took a break and I say unto anybody artist deserve to take breaks from music especially when they have been doing it since a young boy which Justin has. No artist not even him has to have a new album every year and to answer why his album sold so well is because he simply has had a great fan base since Nsync and many people such as me have waited to hear new music from him so that explains his sales being so high and also having a huge fan base for his whole music career. And also his age thing you brought up I simply say that’s life all artist age but he is still the same and sings the same and still makes good music to me and many people but as I say again we all have different opinions and that’s OK with me because that’s what makes conversations great. And not that this matters but his demographic probably ranges from still 16 to 35 or even older just like me I’m 27 years old and I love his music, But I am also a fan of 90′s music anyway and always will be but I love all music. But as the end of the day for me I congratulate anybody in the music industry that can still sell albums because it is not easy by far. So much respect to JT and anybody who can sell millions of records still.

@Mya @meme: first off, let’s not sleep on justin because he is an all around entertainer perhaps the only one of this generation. secondly, everyone’s mentioning usher’s confession which was dope from beginning to end however this was a “cleaner” usher. in the age we live in now, it’s not ALL about your talent. it’s also about what or how you’re portrayed in the media. remember we found out that confessions, AFTER it out, was a literal confession from usher of his infidelity during a long time relationship. then he had all this turmoil w/ his mother & new wife & yet another infidelity issue. then you have chris brown, THIS chris brown will never, ever, ever sell like the pre-grammy battle royale chris. this chris & his thug mentality, me against the world, i don’t give a f*ck attitude is a completely turn off to the “mainstream” which is sad because both men are immensely talented. adele can sing, no doubt but so can alicia keys, beyonce & others. but again, you add the personal & there’s the issue. alicia cheated w/ a married man, beyonce “faking her pregnancy” … not appealing to the mainstream. also let’s keep it real, black people love to tear down other black people instead of celebrating one another & realizing that they are walking through doors opened by previous artists as well as opening doors for future artists.

@KaramelKisses, “the only one of this generation” ??? Girl, i’m gonna need for you to fess up now. Why are you bringing up the personal lives of everyone and Like what does that have to do with the music? Because if I remember, Justin Thicke was involved in the 2004 Superbowl scandal that the media gave him a pass for and Adele just caught flack for her extra pounds and potty mouth. J. Thicke also grew up in a broken family with divorced parents leaving his blue collar mother to do most of the rearing. So what is your point? None of that explains these false numbers of records sold so you can exit stage left. And why you shading Bey? I thought you “stanned” night and day for her. When did you become J. Thicke’s ride-or-die? Suspicious.

    [Reply]

    KaramelKisses Reply:

@Ursula, yes, justin is the only well rounded entertainer of this generation. who else this generation has put out an album like fsls walked away from music to movies where he was successful w/ movies like friends w/ benefits & the social network. he still dabbled in music but was behind the scenes writing & producing for madonna & rihanna. and after a six year hiatus, comes back w/ music that is COMPLETELY different from what’s on the radio right now and sell close to a million week one? reread my statement, i said that in today’s market it’s more than about talent w/ alot of it being about social media. i can name 10 “hot” artists right now that would be dead in the water if you took away their twitter, instagram & facebook accounts. that 2004 halftime show debacle was janet’s not justin’s, he only did what she asked him to. and i must have missed the story about adele & her potty mouth. justin is living a charmed life, no scandals & he is liked by alot of people both in and outside of the industry. the only person thinking that the numbers are false is your delusional ass so not only can you exit stage left but you can tuck your tail between your legs while doing so. never, ever would i shade bey because i love her to death. my point is/was the media will play the underhanded card in order to make light of someone’s professional success by dragging their personal life through the mud.
p.s. i don’t “stan” for anyone but my jesus, family & friends. and i’ve been a jt fan since his days of nsync.

If he switched it up he’d sell alot of records. Remember when Usher dropped ‘Climax’? Yeah that song was number 1 and sold so many copies immediately, why? Because that’s the soulful Usher that we know of. Music will always find its way to great heights if done from the soul. Especially since a lot of his naysayers keep speaking his name. Usher? It looks like he’s going back to his roots. We’ll see but don’t get beside yourselves. More people are expected to accept the white artist because they’re passed off as “mainstream” when in fact they are appealing to the majority of the population which is white people. Take my show for instance do you think people would want to know about what’s going on with MMG and Hustle Gang artists. No they want to know about DWTS and Oscar dresses. Its all politics.

@Wendy Williams, Stop please, stop please, stop please, stop with the race card for Gods sake can we as fans and people stop using the race when it comes to artist and stop saying because someone is white or black their albums sale or do not sale and can we all stop comparing artist to another. They are all different in their own ways and have all sold millions of records whether its in 2013 or 1999 the great artist of the 90′s have sold millions of records already been there and they’ve done that such as usher, ginuwine, tyrese, janet, r. kelly, just to name a few these artist as such have made history already and paved ways for many artist that come next in 2013. Now me being an 80′s baby I admit the R&B music game has and will never be as strong as it used to be and that sucks but also the rap game and pop music as well is not the same as back in the 90′s music was great then and in 2013 some music is still great and also some of the 90′s artist are still here but me being a fan I do not care if they sale 1 album or a million albums I love it as much as I did in the 90′s because to me music was great then and also I am glad that a lot of 90′s artist are still here today making music because they love to make music and yes they do it to make money but they’ve sold millions already so now they simply make music for their fans and because they love their craft. But lets all stop using the the race card I hate still seeing this today as a young black man because the more we use it the more it will continue to grow. Stay blessed and have a beautiful day and lets all just live and love music no matter who it may be love music.

i’m happy for justin timverlake but I do agree with many of the others here that white artists do sell significantly more than black artists, regardless of genre. artists like lenny kravitz, darius rucker, and fefe dobson represent those in the rock/country genres that experience this. eminem is the best selling rapper of all time. ever wonder how that was possible when hip hop was instituted and hip hop classics were being produced almost 20 years before his 1st solo album ? this is just to say, race is a relevant factor.

Lets all face it, when your album is properly crafted like the 20/20 experience, you’ll sell a million or more! Remember 50 Cent’s “Get Rich or Die Tryin”? Wasn’t that a black man? It’s all about great timing and precision. JT didn’t change his style like CB and Usher, he did what does, that’s realness.

But when all you listen to is Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne rap about irrelevant topics with little or no message, there is a tendency that your favourite artist won’t sell. Jay-z knew the album would be a hit that’s why he set up a tour with the man beforehand.
9-10 tracks with 7 minutes or more of singing out a total of 12 tracks??? What else do you want?

Every track on this album has a fulfilling message with a reasonable melody that gets stuck your head.

I don’t think RACE signifies who sells better, i think REASONABLE PEOPLE BUY MUSIC.

@az, don’t come for Onika. Just because what she raps about is an irrelevant topic to you doesn’t mean it’s irrelevant to others. Every song has a message but when an artist doesn’t talk about ‘life’, the public likes to label them as ‘untalented’ and their songs as having ‘no meaning.’ At the end of the day, album sales reflect the power of the BRAND (image) first, and then the music. I can promise you that a lot of people only bought this album because they feel like this is some return of a legend and they want to be a part of the movement. @az, Obviously that’s your opinion, and not fact. And like I said, just because a message is irrelevant to you doesn’t mean that message doesn’t exist. As for her singles, “Beez In The Trap” is the message of working, getting your money. “Right By My Side” is clearly a love story. “Pound The Alarm” is a pop song with the idea of going out and having fun. “Freedom” depicts her thoughts on the industry and how people view her. “Va Va Voom” is a pop song that centers around the idea of a “one night stand.” I know I don’t know you but you seem to be on the popular bandwagon of hating Nicki Minaj right now. If everyone would quit assuming that one race is responsible for something, the problem would be alot lighter. I dont think the album was spectacular enough to sell this much but the promotion was pretty heavy for it, so there’s probably other factors that play a role. also, if where you live only has certain types of radio stations then maybe you should broaden your horizons to explore other places that have strictly R&B stations, because they do exist.

@hyenaz, and prince’s little red corvette is a metaphor about fast, loose women. aliyah’s rock the boat is about a sexual encounter. there’s a difference between subtle & raunchy … jt followed the lead of say prince which makes pusher love girl a subtly sexy song. p.s most music is a metaphor for something some artists aren’t smart or slick enough to make it subtle so they just put it out there in a raunchy manner.

It shouldn’t be about race, background, personal lives, wholesomeness, it should only be about the music. Jt’s new album is okay but there’s no need to act like he’s an angel to try to explain why ppl are buying his stuff.

I believe that Justin Timberlake is the best pop male artist and the best R&B male artist right now. Justin Timberlake will always be a great music artist, a great singer, and a great dancer. Justin Timberlake has been a very, talented entertainer for years now. Justin Timberlake’s third studio solo album called The 20/20 Experience album is the best pop/R&B album of 2013 right now, and arguably the best album of the year right now. Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience album got a 74 percent on Metacritic which indicates generally positive reviews, and has already sold over 900,000 copies right now. Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience album has gotten great critical reviews, great critical success, and great commercial success from unbiased music fans and unbiased music critics. Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience album is about to sell 1 million copies next week. I don’t think Justin Timberlake is only selling records because he is a white music artist, Justin Timberlake is selling records because he is gifted and talented.

I don’t believe the race card always plays a huge role into music artists selling records all the time. People need to remember that Kanye West’s Graduation album sold 900,000 copies in its first week out, that’s great considering the fact that Kanye West is a black hip hop artist. Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III sold 1 million copies in its first week out, that’s great considering the fact that Lil Wayne is a black hip hop artist. Drake’s Take Care album sold over 600,000 copies in its first week out, that’s great, considering the fact that Drake is a half black/half Jew hip hop artist. I believe that talent is stronger than personalty and race when it comes to the music industry. If you have great talent, you can sell records, regardless of race, or musical genres.

People always make the arguement that the only reason why Eminem is the best selling rapper of all-time is because he is a white hip hop artist. Even if that arguement is true, people also need to remember that both white people and black people buy Eminem’s music. I don’t believe Eminem is the greatest rapper of all-time because he sold the most records, but I do believe that Eminem is one of the top 100 greatest rappers of all-time, and arguably the greatest rapper of all-time. Eminem has always been a talented rapper, since he first became a rapper. You can make the arguement that there are some hardcore Eminem fans out in the world who only listen to Eminem and don’t listen to other rappers, and assume and thinks that Eminem is the only great rapper out there, and I believe it is wrong for any Eminem fan to believe that Eminem is the only great rapper in the world, but music is both subjective and objective. Regardless of the situation, you can’t deny the fact that Eminem is a great, talented rapper.

Micheal Jackson’s Thriller album sold over 50 million copies back in 1982, and Thriller turned out to be a great musical masterpiece. There are white people and black people who still listen to Michael Jackson’s Thriller album in 2013. Chris Brown is a talented singer, and talented dancer, if Chris Brown start putting out better music, then maybe Chris Brown could start selling over a million copies off of one album in the near future. Justin Timberlake deserves all the success he is having right now, and the music world should thank him for it. People need to remember that Justin Timberlake was already a successful music artist, before Robin Thicke put out his first album.

@TRA, agree! mike jack took his time w/ thriller because he was trying to put out MUSIC! jt took his time because he was trying to put out MUSIC! this whole “microwave mentality” is the reason why alot of these black artists aren’t doing big numbers. the whole need to be seen even if the music being released is sh*tty. go away, work on perfecting your craft & come back w/ something worth me paying $10-$15. no one was checking for adele prior to 21 (her last album) but she had 2 albums before that. fact is, she took her time w/ 21 & when you listen to it you can tell. she’s already said she’s taking 5 years off to be w/ her son & write some new material so when she releases again, it’s going to be big.

@KaramelKisses, MJ was the best entertainer to ever do it. Justin is no where near him. Thriller cant even be compared to 20/20 because most of the songs on Thriller were hits and singles and the video for “Thriller” was the most expensive made at the time. Not only that, the dances and visuals with Thriller are legendary and still referenced 30 years later. I can promise you that 20/20 wont do a quarter of that.

@TRA,so the goal of your dissertation above is to push opinion by using poorly developed fragments of the truth and many speculative statements. now tell us why you’re so determined to argue the race – sales issue. that is, why is it so important to you that you had to write 4 paragraphs of speculative info all to suggest that there is a leveled playing field in terms of race and music sales? if you would have properly done your research you’d know that multiple research-based scientific studies have already correlated race and music sales. oh.

I do like the album but let’s call a spade a spade. Had Maxwell put this album out we’d be hearing some damn crickets right now. JT has that blue eyed soul that white folks and the like have loved since the Beattles/Rolling Stones/Elvis jacked Muddy Waters, all of Motown, back in the 50s.

Nothing new to see here. White dude/chick (miley cyrus twerking and knee-grows going stupid excited cause a white girl semi-twerked) jacks something black folks come up with and then get the credit for it. I never understood why my Dad didn’t too much care for the Beattles until I saw how much of our culture they stole and got credit for “creating”.

People stop with the JT and Usher comparisons. JT is closer to JB. LISTEN to the lyrics on this album. Usher could never get way with lyrics like this and everyone act like it’s the biggest album ever.

Props to RCA JT for the promotion. At least he promoted his work, unlike some artist (looking at you Xtina).

The shade at how it took Justin to bring back that R&B / Pop core to the music industry after being away for years. This album is a game changer and wasn’t forced, rushed. You can tell Justin and Timbaland put their heart into this album. Hopefully other artists follow suit and begin to produce more quality music. JT shows us that you can still produce a dope dance song with substance: ex; don’t hold the wall.

The album was kind of average let the groove get in kind of save’s it,if pharrell produced it i believe the album would worth he’s sales.I dont think it deserves 1 million first week i think it has to do more on he’s comeback,jay-z’s kingdom come wasn’t good either but as a comeback it sold more than what it deserved to.And yes the fact that justin is white does play a role, but he makes better music than most of the other black male r&b artists

Honestly, as a fan of both JT and Usher (I prefer Usher though), I must say that it’s JT’s time to shine. Looking 4 Myself wasn;t a bad album at all but it really alienated his core audience which are probably the same age as JT’s fans (albeit smaller). Besides JT was very smart in his timing, promotion and release. After all, the dude was gone from music for seven years! I listened to the album and yes it doesn’t scream innovative it’s just that it’s a break from the bland mainstream R&B and generic Europop we’ve been hearing. The 20/20 experience is actually okay but sell 1 million copies in a week? Damn! Either way, I hope this would be an example to other stars (hopefully Usher takes note) because with the right promo and timing an album can be a success. Lastly, in my opinion, I still think Usher has the better voice but JT is ultimately putting out better music.

I just love the sample of BABY LET’S RAP NOW, in SPACESHIP COUPE. Bring back that old school R&B, where are the MOMENTS?
