New Music: Ms. Lauryn Hill – ‘Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)’

Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)

As part of her new venture with Sony, Ms. Lauryn Hill returns with the new song “Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix),” which quietly hit iTunes on Saturday via her label Obverse Creation Music/Sony ATV.

The outspoken Fugees frontwoman raps about “toxic society” and the perils of the industry on the four-minute track. She was “required” to release the song now due to her financial troubles (She is scheduled to be sentenced for tax evasion on May 6).

“Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline,” writes Ms. Hill. “I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music… but the message is still there.”

The song is especially poignant in the days following the tragic death of Kris Kross member Chris Kelly. “In light of Wednesday’s tragic loss (of former label mate Chris Kelly), I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today’s unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked!” she explains.

Hear Ms. Hill’s powerful message below.

    Ugghhh Reply:

@OVODRAKE, so you understand everything that she is talking abou down to a logical level, yea right? To tell you the truth I don’t understand everything she is talking about. The reason why is because of her delivery which is muddled and congested, and that is why I don’t like this song.

    [Reply]

    Sheila Adams Reply:

@Ugghhh, the song is TERRIBLE.She is just spewing alot of angry phrases over a cheap, generic beat. She didn’t even bother to come up with a chorus!! This song is a sad joke and Lauryn should be ashamed and embarrassed.

  7. BEDSTUYFLY

DO YA THING LAURYN. MUSIC WITH SOUL AND ITS REFRESHING TO NOT HEAR ALL THAT RATCHET PUSSY TALK THAT WE CONSTANTLY GET FROM THAT TRASH BOX MINAJ. NOT ALL MONEY IS GOOD MONEY. SHE BASICALLY SOLD HER SOUL, WHICH IS SOMETHING LAURYN NEVER DID, AND ALWAYS STAYED TRUE TO WHAT SHE BELIEVED IN AND STOOD FOR.

    [Reply]

    Sheila Adams Reply:

@BEDSTUYFLY,Lauryn just sold her soul, too. She got right back in bed with the devil (Sony Records) after having problems with them in the past. How is that “staying true to what she believed in and stood for”?? It sounds like a hypocrite to me.

I’m glad Lauryn Hill back, but I really do hate political rap.

    [Reply]

    Margie Reply:

@KING HOV, that’s the brilliant thing about Political rap. It’s not about what you want, it’s about what you NEED. Your mind needs to be woken up to the issues and not just be drunk off a phat beat. Bless your heart though.

    [Reply]

    KING HOV Reply:

@Margie, Wrong I don’t need to or have to listen to anything. YOU need to wake up to reality and realize not everybody is going to like this song.

@KING HOV, Once again, bless your dear heart. No one said you had to like the song. If you read correctly, I spoke about political rap as a whole. It’s not for the simple minded to understand but it’s definitely necessary in the genre of Hip Hop. That’s all.

    [Reply]

    Sheila Adams Reply:

@KING HOV, AMEN,brotha! I see that some of Lauryn’s fans are pretending that this song is some great, big, important statement that needs to be heard. All I hear is an angry, bitter woman spewing alot of complaints and whining over a generic,cheap-sounding beat.

    [Reply]

    Sheila Adams Reply:

@Dee, I’m with you, girl! I agree with what you’re saying.Lauryn is a hypocrite. She despises the big record companies, but then she turns around and gets back in bed with Sony.No one forced her to sign that contract.Oh wait…she needed the money to avoid going to jail.Meanwhile, the fans get a lame,”forced” single that sounds like garbage. She’s a class act, isn’t she?

    [Reply]

    Thetruth Reply:

@Sheila Adams, stfu please. If your dumb broke ass was facing years in prison too, you would take your ass back to work also. Don’t blame her for being miserable, because she had to come back into this bullshit of a music industry. The music industry is a JOB. She at least stayed true to herself by making sensible music that doesn’t include pussy popping and money blowing. Y’all just can’t handle real shit. What do you expect her to rap about? It’s dumbasses like you that make the music industry purposeless.

    [Reply]

    Sheila Adams Reply:

@Thetruth…and why exactly is she facing years in prison?? SHE DIDN’T PAY HER DAMN TAXES!! I suppose you also support her refusal to pay taxes, don’t you?? The truth is,if Lauryn had played her cards right, she wouldn’t be in this mess in the first place. In the late 90s,she practically RULED the music world. She could have been a multi-millionaire by now.She had it all and she threw it all away, end of story.Get your head out of her ass and stop making excuses for her.Yes,the music industry is a “JOB” but some people can handle it,some can’t.And those who can’t,should simply get out of it.Lauryn wants to have it both ways: criticize the same industry that is putting food on her table and keeping her ass out of jail…getting back into bed with the same “devil” who screwed her over before. It’s obvious that you are one of those delusional, obsessed fans who will support ANY stupid thing that she does!! You can now go back to kissing Lauryn’s ass.I’m done now!

@ThinkerNotFollower, oh please don’t try to imply that this is an intricate song for those who are far about the average joe, intellectual wise. This song is shit. These stupid ass nicki stans need to understand if Lauren Hill drops a new album Nicki can kiss the career she ever had goodbye and so called “Queen” title cause L Boogie will shift almost a million copies first week. This track here is beyond any female rappers ability ever. This might just be the most lyrical Hip Hop track ive ever heard from a female period!!!!!

    [Reply]

    Sheila Adams Reply:

@Truth, I can guarantee you that Lauryn most certainly will NOT sell a million units in one week.Especially if this so-called “song” is the official first single.

    [Reply]

    Truth Reply:

@Sheila Adams, Your a fkn idiot this isnt the first single its a track she just put out use your head. We all know Lauren Hill Knows how to come with singles she would literally change the Format of billboard once again. Lauryn is beyond talented. And just so u know Lauryn sold 422,000 first week with The Miseducation album and it went on to sell 19 million records worldwide and 8 Million U.S. The hype for a Lauryn Hill comeback has been insane. She can definately do JT first week numbers if promoted right and with the right singles.

    [Reply]

    Sheila Adams Reply:

@Truth, Yes the Miseducation album was a huge success, but how long ago was that?? The music business has changed ALOT since then.Lauryn is not gonna sell alot of CDs nowadays. There is no “hype” for a new Lauryn Hill CD,outside of her (shrinking) fanbase. Most people think she lost her mind and this horrible song is only gonna reinforce that perception.

    [Reply]

    Factual Reply:

@Sheila Adams, Lauryn Hill could put out an album next week and it would shoot to number 1 guaranteed. With one weeks notice.

    [Reply]

    Woosah Reply:

@Factual, Lmao. Times have changed people. People don’t buy albums anymore. If Mariah Carey can’t push 1 million albums, what makes you think Lauryn Hill will? As much as you would like to think nostalgia and respect pushes public interest, it doesn’t.

    [Reply]

    Factual Reply:

@Woosah, Lauryn Hill and Mariah Carey are 2 different artists though. Lauryn Hill still has her fanbase from years ago plus she hasnt released an album in 15 years. She would definately put up huge first week numbers 100% guaranteed. JT didnt release an album in over 6 years then sold almost 1 million first week so how u gonna tell me Lauryn cant do it. Obviously u werent around in 1998 when she dropped her debut.

    [Reply]

    Woosah Reply:

@Factual, I know they’re different artists, Mariah being the bigger artist. And no she won’t have huge FWS. How are you going to discount my comparison to Mariah and then bring up JT. JT is a white POP SUPERSTAR who can still sell out arenas & stadiums. Lauryn Hill cannot. It’s not that I don’t want to see her win, but it’s the truth of the matter.

    Real As It Gets Reply:

@Woosah, Your stupid as hell. U act like mariah carey and Lauryn Hill are the same artist. So u telling me that if Alicia Keys were to take a 10 year break she wouldnt be able to sell? Lauryn Hill is beyond that level. One of the most talented artists ever so u cant tell me she wouldnt sell if she dropped a new album this year cause u would look so dumb once it sells over 500k. And just to refresh your memory u remember Sade released a new album after 10 years and sold 502k first week with very little promo and no big hit single. People respect and will buy good music especially if its Lauryn Hill. Trust that she would sell close to a milli i put money on it.

    [Reply]

    Woosah Reply:

@Real As It Gets, Mariah Carey & Alicia Keys are definitely bigger artists than Lauryn Hill. They both have multiple albums already released, larger fan bases, and can still sell out arenas. And I was talking about first week sales, not total sales (which I still subconsciously doubt will be huge). And nah, I don’t recall Sade’s situation but in today’s time, Lauryn Hill will not reach 1 million. People love and respect her and MOLH but that nostalgia isn’t enough. If Madonna (the greatest selling female of all time) can’t do it with her large fanbase and sold out tours, what makes you think Lauryn Hill can? Talent doesn’t always turn into sales.

    Creative Minds Reply:

@Woosah, Just so i can get an idea how your mind works how much do u think Lauryn Hill would sell her first week if she dropped an album this year? ill wait….

    [Reply]

    Woosah Reply:

@Creative Minds, Without a doubt, no more than 110K.

    Sheila Adams Reply:

@Factual, Newsflash: Even “hot artists” don’t sell alot of CDs these days.So what makes you think that Lauryn Hill can just come out of nowhere and have a huge album again??

    [Reply]

    Woosah Reply:

@Sheila Adams, They wish she could produce astronomical sales, so they want to speak it into existence. They don’t understand that people don’t buy albums anymore unless you really have a large following and hype.

    [Reply]

    Creative Minds Reply:

@Woosah, Bitch did u really say 110k??? Bitch bye this is Lauryn Hill were talking about. You must have not been around when she released her epic debut album.

I know that we all missed Lauryn and we *want* to be excited about her return, but we need to be honest with ourselves. This song is TRASH!!! I know what she’s doing. She’s pissed at Sony,so she took their money and will give them a bunch of crappy songs in return. She’s trying to hurt them but in the end, she’s just hurting herself and her career. This song is the worst piece of crap that she has ever released. If this is any indication of what the album will be like, she should just retire right now.

This song had sooooo much potential. The beat is hot, and I appreciate Lauryns lyrical ability – but there was no flow in this song. It was all just jumbled together.

I really like this on one hand but I don’t on the other. The base of the beat I like but that ectro-ish bit over the top detracts from the lyrics.

LOL@ those of you who are acting like this song is some grand masterpiece. It is GARBAGE!! The music sounds cheap and generic….it sounds like the lame music you hear on video games. The song has no hook,no melody,no chorus. It’s just Lauryn spitting out a bunch of words and phrases over a generic beat.I can guarantee you that NO radio station is gonna put this “song” in heavy rotation. It’s dead on arrival.

sONY IS ONLY PLAYING UPON LAURYN’S DESEPARATION. sHE HAS HAD TO EAT EVERYTHING SHE SAID ABOUT GETTING OUT. NOW SHE IS SCRAMBLING TRYING TO GET BACK IN. LOOK WHAT THE INDUSTRY CAN DO TO A DESEPARATE ENTERTAINER. SO WHAT IF YOU SING ABOUT THE PROBLEMS AND TURN AROUND AND BOW TO THE SAME ONE THAT YOU ARE SINGING ABOUT FOR A DOLLAR. WHO IS ZOOMING WHO????

    [Reply]

LOOK AT ALL THE ENTERTAINER WITH ALL THE MONEY. NONE OF THEM WITH ALL THEIR MONIES EVER REALLY IMPACT THEIR COMMUNITIES. THEY ONLY BUY 2 OR 3 BIG HOUSES ETC. AND FOR A MOMENT THEY ARE RICH BUT THEY WILL NEVER BE WEALTHY. THEY ARE PAWN USED TO DRAW FRESH MEAT INTO THE INDUSTRY. COME OUT OF BABYLON MY PEOPLE. LAURYN YOU HAVE BEEN CALLED FOR SUCH TIME AS THIS AND MONEY WILL NOT BE YOUR ANSWER. MAY A SAUL ENCOUNTER MIGHT BE IN STORE FOR YOU. YOU ARE DOING THE KINGDOM HARM WITH THESE MESSAGES WITHOUT SOLUTIONS.

Lauryn criticizes the big record companies, then she gets back in bed with Sony Records.I’m sorry, but that makes her a HYPOCRITE.But hey…it’s all about the money, right? Isn’t that the only thing that matters? Forget about pride and taking a stand.

People need to realise that the “Lauryn Hill” that dropped the Miseducation album, over a decade ago has grown. Lauryn is not playing games anymore, she doesn’t care about the fame and fortune – she is about telling the truth. A lot of people, are going to be dissapointed if they are expecting a Miseducation part 2 album, because Lauryn is a true artist and she is not about to compromise her art and copy her own 1999 album. So all MisEducation fans need let go of the past and pay attention to the current Lauryn Hill….
