Drake Leads BET Awards 2013 Nominations

Drake

Drake leads the nominations for the BET Awards ’13. The Young Money rapper scores 12 nominations at this year’s show.

The 26-year-old is nominated five times in the Video of the Year category for his own singles “Started From the Bottom” and the Lil Wayne-assisted “HYFR,” plus collaborations with Kendrick Lamar (“Poetic Justice”), 2 Chainz (“No Lie”), and A$AP Rocky (“Fu**in’ Problems”). He will compete against Rihanna’s “Diamonds,” Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z’s “Suit & Tie,” Kanye West’s “Mercy,” Miguel’s “Adorn,” and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop.”

Kendrick Lamar and 2 Chainz each pick up eight nominations, A$AP Rocky nabs five, and Miguel grabs four. Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, and Miguel earn three apiece.

Chris, Kendrick, Tamar Braxton, and Charlie Wilson were on hand to announce the nominees at the press conference in L.A. on Tuesday.

“I’m still fairly new at this thing right here, so to receive an award of this caliber means a lot to me,” said a humbled Kendrick, who will perform the night before during the BET Experience 2013.

Chris Tucker will host, while Chris Brown and R. Kelly will perform during the ceremony at the Nokia Theater L.A. Live on June 30.

nobody checking for BET Awards anymore…that mess is rigged

    Hajj Reply:

@2bad2bme, right! They choose the winner according on how many viewers will tune in to watch that perticular artist. Remember Justin beiber that year? Or what about pairing jay-z vs beyonce? Or even splitting the award between jaden and willow smith. They r thirsty for ratings. But like always we will tune in to watch the foolery…

I’ts funny that justin timberlake has nominations and frank ocean has none and this is supposed to be BLACK entertainment television…how ironic

    [Reply]

    GetReal Reply:

@nick, Its Black entertainment, in which JT brought with 20/20. If they allow Usher and Chris to be nominated with on that white pop shit they, had on their latest, it rightfully so that JT gets nom.

    [Reply]

    Yipes Reply:

@nick, Maybe because JT sings R&B music you twit. Not like he isn’t the ONLY white guy nominated. He probably won’t show up for it anyway. BET Awards are a joke. White people can’t be nominated, even if they sing R&B or Rap according to you right? It’s black entertainment not black people and black people only. Can’t stand this. You don’t see MTV acting like that. This is why nobody likes the BET Awards. Do you want to be the best of one race of people or everybody?

    [Reply]

    Dan Reply:

@nick, JT is NOT the 1st artist to be nominated or involved in the BET Awards. That’s discriminating, like saying “Oh, you’re black, so you’re not a part of the Country Music Television awards.” LL Cool J just had 2 collaborations with country artists, and if he’s invited to perform at their CMT award show, people should accept that.

    [Reply]

    Blabla Reply:

@nick, stupiiiiid to say this. Create à cérémony only for black people is stupid ans racist . It’s scandalous on our world!!!!!!! How about a “White entertainment award? It would ne strange,no? Soooo a few White people is not bad! Not only black people do rnb! Timberlake took over the rnb Like eminem did with the rap 10 years ago! Admit it!!!!

    [Reply]

    Baddie06 Reply:

@Blabla, Justin Timberlake NEVER took over R&B. He created POP/R&B crossover music. That’s all. Just because he coons around on the dance floor and hits a few nice high notes, does not put him on the same wave length as Usher or Chris Brown. And Eminem NEVER took over rap! He rapped about violent, crazy, weird stuff that related to WHITE PEOPLE so they bought his music and his sales went up. He was only as hot as he was BECAUSE he was white. Had he or Justin Timberlake been black they would’ve fallen in with everyone else. Neither of them are outstanding at what they do. They are just different and white. And in the media’s eyes…WHITE IS RIGHT! Oh and White people already have White Entertainment Television. Just turn on the MAJORITY of the TV shows and music videos. White people dominate EVERYTHING. Give us something. Let us at least have OUR music.

    [Reply]

    Blabla Reply:

@Baddie06, black music can’t shut its door to White people or asian people or arab people bc if you réject them , this Will bring hate against you ans that is not the purpose, right? Plus eminem brought White people in the rap audience Which is more positive than stay all in your world. How you react is Like a White person saying ” beyonce should not be nominated for the vma she’s way too black!”……..

    [Reply]

    Old Black Dude Reply:

@Blabla, @Blabla, this is all weak. Not even getting started with Drake, wanna be rapper signer all nasal. Black people have like 5% of television…and possibly even less than that. If we want to make it exclusive, so be it. There are so many other awards that white or anyone else could go to. Are we going to argue about not being on the Chinese awards, no, argue about the Russian awards, no. They honor their culture, we honor ours.

Act to correct many of the kids on here…Eminem is not the 1st white rapper in Hip Hop. Do some homework. 3rd Bass, Everlast who later formed House of Pain, Vanilla Ice as much as we deny it, and many more in between. Shady is lucky because he was at the birth of social media. Shady had crazy flows before the word Facebook or youtube was put in a sentence.

No Wale, T.I. J. Cole? The throne and Beyonce again with no music? No KELLY ROWLAND? Lol man that’s fucked up. This show will continue to lose respect and I’m all for BET Awards it’s what I grew up on. There was once a time of excitement because you didn’t know who would take what awards. Now it’s repetitive and all wrong. Tighten up BET!

    [Reply]

    Dan Reply:

@EdwardPonton, BET needs to change their qualifying nominations “cut-off” period, meaning no 2011-mid 2012 artists/singles/videos should be nominated for the 2013 awards. For example, Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, The Throne, Drake’s HYFR video should not be apart of this year’s nominations. People like Wale, Future, T.I., 2 Chainz, Kendrick, French Montana, Iggy, The Game, Brandy, Alicia Keys, Pusha T, Miguel, and Fabolous are the ones who should be more prominently displayed on this year’s show, as they represent, you know, 2012-2013!

    [Reply]

    DKiluminati Reply:

@Dan, Nicki and Drake all have recent singles to be nominated. For example High School and Started from the bottom!

    [Reply]

    Dan Reply:

@DKiluminati, like I said, 2011-mid 2012 material should no longer be eligible, as they had time to do that for BET Awards 2012. Nicki & Drake’s new material indeed count, as long as BET feel they’re worthy of nominations…

    [Reply]

    D kiluminati Reply:

@Dan, ok koo! I was under the impression that you meant that just Drake and Nicki didn’t count because of their recent hits. However Beyonce, The Throne should not have been nominated, they prolly win! But Nicki deserves it. Her 2012 hits include: Starships sold 7.2 Million and Beez in the Trap sold way over 500,000. Va Va Voom sold almost 800,000 copies. Pound The Alarm Sales way over 1 million units. Her feauture with Justin Beiber “Beauty and A Beat” 2x platinum and spawned over 220 MILLION views on Youtube. Nickis endorsements and TV shows, Magazine covers like Teen Vogue and Elle. All that is major money shes bringing in. Not counting Girl on Fire 2x platinum, how do ppl not acknowledge that? She’s a monster.

You may continue shedding your thug tears.

    [Reply]

    Dan Reply:

@Instant Coffees, by your standards, if an artist spews out 5+ videos per year, they’re worthy of consideration. But what happens when that artist’s videos are shit? Does BET just leave them off the show? Iggy had a breakthrough year, period. She put more work in with music, magazines, mixtapes, and putting herself more out there than at least 2 of the women in that category. It’s BET, so I’m not shocked, but opposed to last year, this could’ve been Iggy’s time to be recognized.

I am very happy that Drake got 12 BET Awards nominations at the 2013 BET Awards. I am very happy that Drake leads with the most nominatons this year. The rest of the nominations are either great, average, very terrible, or very horrible this year. There were more terrible nominations this year than great nominations. It makes no sense that Beyonce was nominated for a BET Award when she didn’t even release an album in 2012 or early 2013. I believe Beyonce is a very, talented singer, but the BET Awards are kissing her ass to the point where they should just come out and admit that they would eat her pussy in order for her to come to the award show and perform there this year.

The BET Awards made a huge mistake by not nominating Nas for Best Male Hip Hop artist. Nas’ Life Is Good album was one of the top 10 best hip hop albums of 2012, and got over 4 Grammy Award nominations, including a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Album at the 2012 Grammy Awards. Nas’ Life Is Good album got great critical reviews and got a 81 percent on Metacritic which indicates universal acclaim and general positive reviews. Future is not even a real singer, or a real rapper, even though Future considers himself a rapper and a singer for most hooks. It makes no sense that Future gets nominated for Best Male Hip Hop artist, but Nas doesn’t get any nominations. The sad part about the BET Awards is the fact that the BET Awards have become worst than the Grammy Awards now.

Frank Ocean just won 2 Grammy Awards at the 2013 Grammy Awards after leading the Grammy Awards with the most nominations. Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange album got a 92 percent on Metacritic, got universal acclaim, got great critical acclaim, and great critical reviews. It makes no sense that Frank Ocean didn’t get any award nominations at the 2013 BET Awards. I could be very wrong, but I believe one of the main biggest reasons why Frank Ocean didn’t get any BET Awards nominations this year, is for the simple reason that Frank Ocean is both gay and bisexual. There were some black people in the hip hop community, the R&B community, and black community who didn’t want to listen to Frank Ocean’s music ever again, after he admitted he was both gay and bisexual. If Frank Ocean would had sold more records and got more radio airplay, he would had gotten a BET Award nomination. If Frank Ocean didn’t admit he was gay and bisexual, he would had gotten a BET Award nomination.

The Grammy Awards have been hit or miss over the years, but there nominations makes more sense than the BET Awards nominations. Justin Timberlake should had gotten more nominations than what he got at the 2013 BET Awards. Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience album is the best pop/R&B album of 2013. Justin Timerlake’s The 20/20 Experience album got a 74 percent on Metacritic, got great critical reviews, and got great commercial success by selling over 1 million copies in its second week out. The BET Awards are now acting like the American Music Awards. The most popular music artists will win the most awards, instead of the best overall music winning any awards this year.

Beyonce, The Throne should not have been nominated, they prolly win! But Nicki deserves it. Her sophomore effort “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded was certified platinum by the RIAA. She’s a monster and the only bitch on that list that accomplished alot in the past year. Nicki don’t see none if those crusty ass washed up hoes whose careers were over before it started. Eve is respected alot. No one on that list truly compares

  67. My Thoughts...

Honestly, the Best Female Hip Hop category definitely has my curiosity at a PEAK. But I have already broken it down to just being between A. Banks, E-V-E, and Nicki. Reason being is because I can actually build a strong case as to why EACH of these women could win. But I have to make a HUGE point about my girl Eve. Even if she does not win this award, IT REALLY WOULD NOT MATTER, because she has BEEN THERE…..DONE THAT……GOT A T-SHIRT!! Because if you know about BET or you do your homework, Eve has ALREADY made history in this matter. Eve was FIRST FEMALE to win the Best Female Hip Hop Award in 2001.She was the first one to EVER win that. The clip of that footage is still on BET.com to this day. You can’t talk about BET Awards History and NOT bring her up. She comes back after TEN YEARS and gets a BET nomination just like that??!!! That’s damn good in itself. Who does that?! And I really wish that people would STOP hating Eve and throwing shade at her. Why would you not want her to WIN?!! She is EXCELLENT and has been for YEARS. My vote would ultimately go to E-V-E, because she has been through Sooo much trying to put out Lip Lock, and it’s FINALLY out.I bought it And it is a DAMN GOOD ALBUM. Eve shows determination and I really think she should be and hope that she is recognized for it.

Beyonce was NOT eligible to be nominated this year. The rules say that you have to submit a music video to BET between April 1 to March 30 according to BET’s president Stephen Hill.So for this year’s award show it would be April 1, 2012 to March 30, 2013. After explaining the situation with Trina and Keyshia Cole back in 2011.BET Awards are shady this is clearly favoritism towards Beyonce.
