Melanie Fiona Expresses Gratitude to Lauryn Hill in Open Letter

Melanie Fiona and Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill has influenced many of today’s artists, but few have been more inspired by her than Melanie Fiona. After meeting her after her show in Brooklyn on Tuesday night, the Canadian singer was compelled to write an open letter to the Fugees frontwoman.

She expressed her gratitude and appreciation, while crediting Hill for breaking down barriers and making her the artist she is today.

“My life will never be the same… It will be better… For what I received last night in energy and inspiration will most definitely make me a better artist and woman in this industry,” wrote a humbled Melanie.

Read her heartfelt words below.

I have had many blessed, spiritual, and unforgettable moments in my life… But none more inspiring and life altering than last night. For those of you have ever listened to my music as a full body of work, heard any of my interviews, or have been to any of my live shows… Knows, that Lauryn Hill is a driving force of inspiration in everything I do. There would be no first audition for me if couldn’t sing her version of “his eye is on the sparrow”… There wouldn’t be “Felony Miona” …. There wouldn’t be the artist you see today who isn’t afraid to bare her soul about life and love. And last night, I got to tell her that. After seeing her murder the stage…I personally got to express my teary eyed gratitude. A REAL dream come true for me. Lauryn Hill is the true essence of artistry that I aspire to represent… One who can break barriers, colour lines, industry standards, and ignorant minds… All while making amazing heartfelt educated music. My life will never be the same… It will be better… For what I received last night in energy and inspiration will most definitely make me a better artist and woman in this industry. You will feel it. Thank You #LaurynHill… You are singlehandedly, hands down, the greatest to ever do it ALL… Triple Threat… And to inspire a musical generation so starved that we still anticipate any and everything that you will do in the future. With Love, Respect, Support and Gratitude, MF xo

Lauryn Hill is a once-in-a-generation artist. I don’t know if there will ever be a more artistically gifted female urban artist. Don’t get me wrong I love women and I think they are as able to make good music as men are, but this industry (and especially hip-hop) is misogynistic at heart; it will not let a skilled female rapper prosper as easily as a male rapper would (just one of thousands of reflexions of the society in which we live).

If it does, it will be in accordance with THEIR rules, and we see it with female rappers battling it out to determine who is the “baddest b*tch” (yes, I do know that in this case, it’s supposed to be something positive… But think of the connection between such coinages & the male chauvinism of Hip-hop).

Melanie Fiona is so articulate…I LOVE IT! Is it me or would it be AMAZING if Lauryn Hill and Melanie Fiona collaborated? There is no denying Lauryn’s impact on the game and it’s refreshing to see artists like Melanie Fiona express their gratitude to artists like her. I hope we get a new album from Melanie soon.
