J. Cole Reveals ‘Born Sinner’ Cover Art, Moves Up Release Date

Born Sinner

J. Cole battles good and evil on the cover art for his sophomore album Born Sinner, which was revealed on his Instagram account. The standard (above) features the gates of heaven, while the deluxe (below) shows a devil.

“You’re gonna hear sonically and soundwise as a producer how I’ve grown,” Cole said of the follow-up to his 2011 debut Cole World: The Sideline Story. “I’m not trying to make my old stuff and I’m not trying to make anything that was made in the past. I’m trying to concoct new creations.”

The album, which has spawned the Miguel-assisted single “Power Trip,” will now arrive a week earlier on June 18 and compete directly with Kanye West’s Yeezus.

“Kanye West is one of the greatest artists of our generation,” tweeted Cole. “Which is exactly why I’m moving my release date up.”

He can kiss that second number 1 good bye now. I’m still hoping for the best for him, but I’m buying Yeezus before I buy anything else. I’m also not feeling the similarities between the albums with all the religious referenced and what not. Idk I know J. Cole did it first, and the cover and titles are a lot better than Kanye’s, but we all know Kanye’s gonna have the better album.

@Nick, As a Kanye stan, no one expects you to give Cole the benefit of the doubt. Stranger things have happened. Look at his tweets….he’s not afraid of Kanye, who is a mere mortal like the rest of us.

@Nick, Kanye is just plain weird now IMO I’d buy Cole’s CD years before Kanye’s

@Nick, Cole is a brave artist and i respect him for wanting to compete with the best. People have been doubting him and calling him average and boring. He is just as good as Drake and Kendrick so hopefully by taking this risk and showing his abilities with hopefullly an amazing album, people will consider him a “leader of the new school” which he deserves. The respect he gets from this is more valuable than a #1 album. Cole has always cared more about quality than numbers anyway. I will be pre-ordering Born Sinner as soon as possible and i wont be buying Kanye’s album at all. #ColeWorld : )

@Nick, its ridiculous to even mention jcoles name in the same breath as kanye. your comment is actually more annoying than anything

He’s clearly not concerned about a #1. Sure, it’d be special but what’s a #1 if the music doesn’t have longevity and the album is soon forgotten? I’ve been waiting for this. Glad he’s not shrinking away from a challenge and/or friendly competition.

i reallllyyy love j.cole and i want him to do great but moving the date up was a bad decision, kanye is dropping his album the same day, and we all know who’s going to be number 1

@jay, this is all about money, there fans is going to run out and buy the albums in hopes of getting one are the other the #1 spot, even though cole now that kanye is high the favs ti get that spot he knows that he will move some albums in the prosses it,s all about money, just like when 50 and kayne went in to that friendly compition it was all about making money.

I wonder if the media will make a big event out of this… It’s sort of like in 2007 when it was Kanye’s Graduation vs. 50 Cent’s Curtis

    [Reply]

    shak Reply:

@drakefan, no they wont, because 50cent at the time was releasing his 3rd album and he broke sales records w/ first 2 and kanye also broke sales records with late registration so when 50cent and kanye went head 2 head they were top in the game and top in sales overall at the time so thats why it was HUGE but jcole not big artist sales wise. ima buy kanye album even tho i hate the title and cover lmao

maybe he’s tryna show people that you don’t always have to be lurking for that #1 on the top 200 to push great music. who knows? still a bad move cuz there is virtually no promotion for that album by roc nation and its dropping like around the corner while Kanye is goin all out

    [Reply]

    Chance Reply:

@x, Cole World didn’t have that much promotion either and it sold over 200K in the first week. Cole’s fanbase is bigger than most people think. They’ll show up.

Deluxe cover is super dope. I’ll probably illegally download this and buy Yeezus. Too much coming out next month for my wallet to handle.

    Quinn Reply:

@Brad, “Nigga, please. An album $10 you act like it’s 10 G’s.” On a serious note, that’s ignorant. You’d rather support the guy who’s gonna sell hella copies as opposed to the one who’s STILL on the come up, so to speak. Backwards as hell.

    [Reply]

    Brad Reply:

@Quinn, who said I’m acting like it’s 10 G’s.. you have no idea what situation I’m in right now. I’m a huge Kanye fan and I always buy his albums. It doesn’t matter who’s “on the come up.” If it’s good, I buy it. So if I hear it and end up liking it, I’ll buy it. Stop whining and being judgmental.

He wouldn’t drop on the same day as Kanye if he wasn’t confident his album is better. Everyone’s gonna talk about it. This is gonna be like 50 vs Kanye in 07. Fans gonna be competing which makes good sells for both artists. Cole is one smart ass nigga……….

    [Reply]

    LJ Reply:

@Shae, We all saw how that ended, with 50 left in shambles.

    [Reply]

    Shae Reply:

@LJ, that’s not the point. At the end of the day, 50 sold 691,000 first week. That’s still huge numbers.

Cole isn’t concerned about #1, he’s concerned about selling more albums. The thinking of hip hop these day!!!!

It’s a brave move, if he didn’t think his body of work was good enough he wouldn’t have pushed up the release date.

Kanye is wack & dont even write his shxtt . Cool is The Nas Of This Generation . I have so much respect for that dude . I wish him the best

    [Reply]

    Brad Reply:

@Music junkie, that’s why Kanye’s last album is the 28th best rated album of all time right? Where’s Cole on that list? Cole is good but he’s no Nas. Get all the way the fck out.

@Brad, Doesn’t change that fact that Rhymefest, Consequence, Big Sean, etc writes Kanyes lyrics. Stop being a dickrider

    [Reply]

    Parris Reply:

@flawda, if they write Kanye’s stuff then Biggie writes Jay’s stuff. You just sound ignorant and bitter kid. Consequence and all them would be more successful right now if they wrote on Ye’s level.

DOPE SHIT!!! If Cole were your average rapper who only knew how to take about bullshit and trivial frivolities, I’d be worried for him. But this nigga is an intellectual.

Also, nice to see he’ll be performing “Power Trip” tomorrow on Jimmy Fallon.

Number 1 or not. The fact that he moved the release date up to compete is a win win for Cole. Sure some will prefer one artist over the other, but let’s be honest. Your going to wonder what the other artist has to offer which may prompt you to purchase both anyway. The chances of this are really good, which means Cole gets recognition (sales, press, praise) either way.

Wouldn’t it be wise just to listen to the snippets, or stream both albums at home first, then decide which of the 2 is more priority? I’d rather support Kanye first, but if Cole’s album is on point like I know it can be, I may buy both or just Born Sinner.

  22. JHP

I respect Cole doing that, but he’s definitely not going to get that second #1 Album. Yeezus is selling at least 400k like all of Kanye’s solo albums have, and Cole will do about 250k-300k

    [Reply]

    JHP Reply:

@JHP, But I’m a big fan of Kanye and Cole by the way, and I will be buying and listening to both their albums that day!

If you are a fan of Ye, buy Yeezus. If you’re a fan of Cole, buy Born Sinner. If you’re a fan of both, like myself, buy both albums. It’s worth spending an extra $12 to get the other album. They’re both going to be excellent. They both rap about relevant issues in society and personal struggles that essentially anyone can identify with…wheras Drake talks about not making new friends. Yes the Drake comment was necessary. June 18th!!!

Just a quick thought, maybe just maybe J Cole thinks he has a really great album on his hands. If he makes a better album than Kanye, word of mouth will take the album a longer way than the initial hype of Kanye’s project.
