New Music: J. Cole f/ TLC – ‘Crooked Smile’

Crooked Smile

J. Cole embraces his flaws and all on “Crooked Smile,” the second single off his album Born Sinner, due June 18. The Roc Nation MC links with T-Boz and Chilli of TLC on the upbeat number. He pokes fun at himself, while encouraging women to feel good about their imperfections.

“I got smart, I got rich, and I got bitches still/ And they all look like my eyebrows, thick as hell,” he raps on the uplifting number.

TLC provides the catchy hook. “Thank you T-Boz and Chilli. RIP LEFT EYE,” tweeted Cole, who will launch his “Dollar & A Dream” tour on June 11.

its just ok. Not even half as good as Power Trip was

@Truth, i agree im actually disappointed with this song. Its boring. Power trip just had that banging beat and it was so unique. this sounds like a track jcole had on one of his mixtapes.

@Summertime, I’ve had power trip on repeat forever and there’s no way that this song will get a quarter as many plays as power trip. However, I definitely have to give him props for the intention behind the song. It’s definitely a positive song meant to uplift people and J.Cole has always been great at doing that.

    TLC is back— good song!

@fonkyfresh, I feel like he wasted a whole TLC Feature. When he used missy it was much more impactful. This was just t boz and chili as back up singers

    fonkyfresh Reply:

@Dodd., but most features are– i mean i’m just happy to hear TLC– maybe there will be a remix with more TLC

Screw Drake’s song with Aaliyah. Screw Chris Brown’s song with Aaliyah. They shouldn’t even touched a 90s classic R&B angel.

    J. Cole’s doing it right. :D

@Sushi, what has this got to do with Drake or Chris Brown?

Don’t even through shade near Aaliyah’s name. She didn’t choose to have songs with Drake/Breezy and they turned out Dope AF.

    [Reply]

    Sushi Reply:

@A, No. Not really. I’m a fan of both artist, but I have to be honest, the songs were horrible! It was nice hearing Aaliyah again, but creepy. They should just leave the dead alone, and let the past be the past.

@Sushi, You have heard both songs yet chris Brown song hasn’t been released just :15 second snippets yeah ok…

I am living for the JHud sample tbh; but I also agree that it does sound like a mixtape song or album-filler not a single. But nice track nonetheless.

Haha, the fools comparing this to “Power Trip” and saying it’s “boring” might as well go listen to some ratchet, degrading club music. Leave the intellectual shit to the true intellectuals, please.

Love the track, Cole. Thank you for being a voice.

    Awful

    [Reply]

    Raj Reply:

@OVODRAKE, Yeah, because he isn’t crying about a woman breaking his heart like Drake. You have no taste in music.

    [Reply]

    OVODRAKE Reply:

    @Raj, your Crazy JCole sucks!!

    [Reply]

    Shae Reply:

@OVODRAKE, How so? He’s got TLC on the song, brought in a choir for the end, and publicly accepted his flaws…… FAR from awful. What do you want him to rap about? A life he isn’t about? Or crying & complaining about b*tches and how they use him then leave on damn near every song, like Sir Aubrey Graham? OR did Cole just rap about everything about YOU. Too honest for you? Exactly. Now stfu and buy the album on June 18th, with your insecure, confused ass.

    [Reply]

    Shae Reply:

@OVODRAKE, no, you don’t get dragged for one simple word. That was for stupidity.

Great song with a great message… Wish it was a little more TLC.

But it’s very refreshing to hear a hip hop song in today’s times with such a positive message.

Y’all …. is Chilli doing that ad libs? Cuz …. this sounds like Jermaine featuring Tionne lol

    [Reply]

    LoveGoodMusic Reply:

@Grant, You can clearly hear Chilli singing along with T-Boz on the hook. smh

    [Reply]

    Grant Reply:

@LoveGoodMusic, SHE thinks we can and YOU say we can — so I suppose that’s good enough.

    [Reply]

    LoveGoodMusic Reply:

@Grant, Because WE (excluding your deaf a**) can! It has no other choice but to be “good enough” because the song is featuring HER.

Yes T-Boz’s voice has more volume but you can clearly hear Chilli’s voice on the hook as well.

Hearing aids aren’t that hard to get, maybe you should check one out :)

I love how he took one of his own “flaws” and built an entire concept around it. “Power Trip” was definitely more of a banger, but lyrically this was more interesting. I just love J. Cole, he seems like a genuinely good dude, a very talented kid.

LOVE THIS!!!! I do wish there was more TLC in the song but it’s still dope.

I love the fact that the song actually has a meaning behind it, unlike most of the music now a days…

I’m so ready for this album :)
