Jay-Z Rewrites the Rules in ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail’ Promo Video

Pharrell, Swizz Beatz, Rick Rubin, and Jay-Z

With nine days to go until his album Magna Carta Holy Grail drops, Jay-Z teases with another video promo as part of his partnership with Samsung Mobile.

In the latest clip, the hip-hop mogul speaks to his collaborators and confidants Pharrell, Swizz Beatz, and Rick Rubin about rewriting the rules. “We don’t have any rules, everyone’s trying to figure it out. That’s why the Internet is like the wild west. We need to write the new rules for what’s going on right now,” explains Mr. Carter.

He hopes that come July 4 everyone will be listening to the album at the same time. “The whole thing I wanted to do was have that fireplace or that radio moment where everyone’s just sitting in front of the thing listening to an album. I want everyone to hear the album at one time.”

The Magna Carta app is now available to download at Google Play. On July 4, Samsung will release 1 million free copies to Galaxy S III, Galaxy S 4, and Note II owners.

he blatantly hijacks kanyes ideas and concepts then acts like it was his original idea all along. this is all kanye’s “yeezus” promotional innovation. im not on board for this and im not on board for pretending as though jay z just woke up with this “new rules” epiphany. he’s overtly ripping off his younger brother’s brilliance and every objective spectator is wise to that.

@sa, I fail to see how the two are similar. Kanye released his album for just as anybody else would; he just didn’t bother promoting it (or supplying any artwork for it). Jay-Z is releasing his through an app, and essentially received a grant from Samsung to supply it to a million people for free.

I know Kanye was trying to be innovative, but it pales in comparison to Jay’s campaign. I don’t think he is stealing anything from Kanye.

@sa, ummm they probably came up with this idea together. You act like Kanye released his album months ago

@sa, kanye was involved with this album as well. these guys are labelmates and friends, is it not possible that they could have had a conversation along the lines of “how are we going to shake things up musically this summer?”. kanye took the minimal approach, and jay took the corporate sponsorship approach. completely different. the only similarity is that both were announced around a month before their release.
