Kendrick Lamar, Drake Big Winners at BET Awards

Kendrick Lamar and Drake

Kendrick Lamar and Drake were the big winners at the BET Awards ’13. The rappers each took home three awards at Sunday’s show in Los Angeles.

Drake won Video of the Year for “Started From the Bottom” as well as the Coca-Cola Viewers Choice Award, while Kendrick scored Best Male Hip Hop Artist and Best New Artist.

While accepting his award for Best Male Hip Hop Artist, the Compton MC delivered a heartfelt speech. “If you keep love, God, respect, and hard work in your heart, you can do anything you want in life,” he told the crowd.

Drake was absent, but he showed his appreciation on Twitter. “Thank you to BET and to the fans for voting!” he tweeted. “I’m home finishing the album and spending time w/ family before we begin our journey Sept 17.”

Rihanna took home Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Miguel picked up the award for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist, and Nicki Minaj won Best Female Hip Hop Artist for the fourth year in a row.

She shouted out her Barbz while accepting the award. “It’s a humbling experience because my fans are such amazing people. … They inspire me,” said Nicki.

Chris Brown opened the show with a medley of songs and won the Fandemonium Award. “Don’t read the bull in the news, I’m a real dude,” he said.

The 13th annual event featured performances from Mariah Carey, Ciara, R. Kelly, Chris Brown, 2 Chainz, J. Cole, Justin Timberlake, and more.

  9. Wow

    Kendrick Lamar had the best acceptance speech ever last night. Even after attaining fame he stayed true to who he was…. AND he thanked God.

    @Wow, They do that for the first 2 years

    @channel_ROMAN, STFU.

  10. Wow

    Question: And NO, I’m not being rude, but the best group. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. Does anyone know them? Is their music good? I’ve never heard their music before so I was just curious.

    TBear Reply:

    @Wow, Macklemore is the rapper the does Thrift Shop and They Cant Hold Us back

    Ryan Lewis is his DJ/Producer

    choko Reply:

    @Wow, where are u from.cause not to know macklemore,it shows u don’t listen to music.#smh

    Wow Reply:

    @choko, . Do you know how ignorant you sound? Obviously I DO listen to music if I’m on checking out who won. I have something called a JOB, so I don’t have as much time as I would LIKE to listen to music. The only music I usually get to hear is whatever comes on the radio to and from work. Anyway, bye, sweetie! And to TBEAR & channel_ROMAN – thanks for the responses! I’ll have to check them out. (:

    channel_ROMAN Reply:

    @Wow, Thrift Shop and Can’t Hold Us Down are the weakest song on his album, but they’re still good for what they are. Singles. But, their album is REALLY GOOD !

    Wow Reply:

    @channel_ROMAN, . *I just looked them up. Lol. So I HAVE heard their music before, I just wasn’t aware of WHO they were. I.e. “Can’t Hold Us.” Heard it on a commercial before, but I thought it was another artist (because of the chorus). Thanks ! (:
