Lauryn Hill Begins 3-Month Prison Sentence

Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill has checked into a federal prison in Connecticut to start serving her three-month sentence for tax evasion.

TMZ reports that the 38-year-old Fugees frontwoman was booked into the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury at 11:15 a.m. EST on Monday.

The FCI is described as a “minimum security type facility” where inmates live in “barracks type” housing.

Hill will not be isolated in the facility and will be housed with the general population.

She was sentenced to three months in prison for failing to pay taxes on about $1.8 million in earnings. Before the sentencing, her attorney said that she had paid more than $970,000 to satisfy the state and federal tax liabilities. She signed a new deal with Sony to help pay off some of the debt.

@Margie, that’s the MOST stupid statement I hear. Of course black people can be racist. Racism affects everyone, no matter what color. @fonkyfresh, black people can’t be racist because they are not in a possition to keep any group back while they reign supreme! that is exclusive to white supremacy, they can however react to white supremacy racially, hating other races mainy because other races hate and oppress them. But LH was framed by this same ‘illuminati” music industry, there are no physical evidence she ever made racial comments.

it is true that blacks (at this point in history) can’t be racist

but i think, people may confuse that statement as being the same as declaring that we can’t be prejudiced, bigoted, oppressive, or biased (which is obviously not true)

the key to it all remains, having the power to oppress, systemically, and systematically

i guess, to that end, i may offer that Prejudice is something that people can readily see, and immediately pinpoint; while Racism is most effective (and most practiced) when it works “behind the scenes” — out of sight, out of mind

You are probably referring to the incident where her record company was trying to get her to change her style because they said it would appeal to more white kids in the suburbs. Then Lauryn said that she didn’t care if white kids listened to her music. This is the quote that people take as racist but if you listen to the interview, what she was saying was that she didn’t feel the need to change her style to appeal to particular group of people. She isn’t writing music for them and doesn’t want to compromise her art form.

It is a fact black people cannot execute racism. those of you who cannot understand that need to define racism. Often times I see white people refer to a person being racist because they used the n word. Yes, certainly anyone can do that. Racism requires have the institutional power to use someone’s race against them. History tells us that that is what white people have done and continue to do even in this blog. Why is a conversation about miss Hill filled with comments about black people? Because you want to use her race to imply she does not deserve any personal concern for not paying her taxes, after all she is black. there are plenty of white people not paying taxes. Why are there no comments here about that? Because the white people on this blog have the power in their numbers to bring their racist ideas to bear.

To all of the people who obviously haven’t bothered to learn the definition of the word “racist”, here it is COPIED AND PASTED from Websters.

    Definition of RACISM
1: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
    2: racial prejudice or discrimination

Now, if you look you will see NOTHING about power, or power structure, or the ability to Oppress, instead it’s an ideaology, an opinion for lack of better words that race is the means to judge someone, or to beleive that one is “Superior” to another because of their race. That being said I know plenty of Afro-Amer people who beleive that we are God’s “Choosen People” and so forth, and that is Racicst (So are So-Called Jews who say the same thing). Also there are Afro-Amer people who have a problem with inter-racial couples, that also is racist, there are Groups who beleive that white people are a race of devils, which is racist. Now you may be calling me an uncle Tom about now, and nothing could be further from the truth.Instead I wrote this comment because I read one comment after another, made by people who are clearly very eloquent, “but” who obviously don’t know the meaaning of a simple word like “Racist” so in order to stop those “Caucasian Racist” who are reading this and laughing at the lack of knowledge of the many commentors on this subject, I wanted to put it out there for all to see, and hopefully, those who are partaking in this forum wil use the correct term, which is “OPPRESS” (which by the way DOES require Power). So, in the end, yes anyone can be “Racist” but one needs “Power” in order to Oppress. People please open your eyes and Truly Wake Up!!!

But I do know that some of the lyrics to some of her songs have “black power” tones and undertones. But this, in and of itself, does not make her racist. I don’t think that having and expressing anger about the plight of your own people is equivalent to being racist. THey are two different concepts. Race is a construct of the european mind. No one else on the planet classified people according to their skin color before the european did it. It has no basis whatsoever. For us non-europeans to continue to classify ourselves accordingly is to continue to allow others to define who we are. @Krista Kimple,

“Long dead ancestors?” “Move on and move past?”
Statements like this is why the conversation on racism AND the oppression of Blacks as a result will never end. Respectfully, you’re missing a multitude of key points. Firstly, the oppression of Blacks is very much alive and it’s wholly done by Whites, most specifically in America, but if you want some real, hard to live with facts, look at what’s being done and has been done in Africa. Any group of people who can put people out of their homes and schools, adults and children, only to put their own white children and selves into properties and places that are not theirs, then supply weapons to the down trodden and start civil unrest resulting in wars that killed and continues to kill countless African people including children AND have children and women raped, beaten and killed, are one hellish group of people. Racism and the oppression of people of African descent is long from over. If you really want to know, it’s pretty much just getting started. We haven’t seen anything yet. The ancestors you speak of have millions of offspring that are alive and well and kicking the heck outta Black folk from behind the scenes and in front. Just because you don’t see bodies laying in the street or hanging from nooses, doesn’t mean we are not being destroyed. They just figured out a less ‘visible’ means of doing so. To say move on is a grave insult to the any race of oppressed people, especially when the oppression is still taking place. Now, I know that is not your intent. You sound like a good person, a bit naïve, but good hearted. But, the truth is, you were born to a race of people who have historically destroyed, (though they call it conquering), some aspect of dang near every race, manner of living, and anything else they’ve gotten their hands on, or in. The devil takes on many forms, racism as it applies to the oppression of a race of people is only one of them.

Hence, racism really does live, is alive and well in U.S. And it rears its ugly head and continues to try to oppress Black people. If you aren’t Black, then you haven’t experienced it. If you are Black, and you haven’t experienced it, then look at the Zimmerman trial. The whole thing from beginning to end is evidence that racism is alive and well. It’s a REAL problem and can not be oversimplified.

Yeah, this feed is funny. What does any of this have to do with Lauryn? She’s not a racist, just educated about her race. And yes, if you don’t pay your taxes, you end up in jail (sometimes). And yes they got Martha Stewart but how many did they not convict before and after her. And no, this will probably not straighten Lauryn out, because the girl has issues unfortunately. Incredible and beautiful artist, but quite unstable. I understand the frustration though when it comes to race because many times black people have done the right thing in attempt to trust the judicial system in trying to provide justice and that system has failed us so many times, while so many people of other races or a stronger financial backing have gotten away with murder amongst many other things. I do believe blacks can be racist, anyone can be because it is a state of mind. But no, blacks are not really in the position to oppress any race the way that whites have oppressed blacks and many other races. But I think we tend to be prejudice due to so many centuries of prejudices against us. It’s a jacked up cycle that we need to break. The one thing I think we want is for whites to understand that even if you are not the one oppressing us, there are still many out there doing it including the media, so stop telling yourselves that just because we were finally given freedom that it means that we are free. Racism is still very strong in America and many races, not just blacks are still victims to this. Unfortunately there is a long list of things that blacks just can’t do that white people can get away with all day long. It’s like we have to constantly prove that we are worthy and capable and innocent when whites can just be, they don’t have to second guess every action they make. For example, how often is it that the cops follow a white guy into a nice gated community that he lives in, with him dressed in a polo shirt and khakis, with his daughter in the car, and the cops are already calling backup as if he’s guilty of something. And did I mention he’s driving an old car, but he’s not blasting music or have a bunch of illegal stuff on his car, all stickers are up to date and he wasn’t speeding. And then they get out of the car and give him a 10 minute questioning of why he is there and he was simply parking in his driveway. Then ask that white guy, how many of his friends does he know that that has happened to. And that’s why everything around us tends to be about race. Black people only make up, what, like 13% of the nations population, but the percentage of incidences like this are unbelievably higher in the black population than the white. And you wonder why black people bring up race as a factor for everything? Really America!! Yes, it’s annoying to bring up race as a factor for everything, but this nation is so far from ridding of racism and prejudice that unfortunately it can be applied to so many cases when you look at everything as an entirety. And we are still fighting for rights, so why is it that we are disrespected for fighting for those rights? The right to be us and treated equally in comparison to the majority in any situation whether it’s sentencing for a crime, education, jobs, are being able to pull up in your own driveway.

@NormalGuy, Spoken like a true ignorant ass white man. Ms.Hill willing put her career on hold because she has children that needed her. It’s what happens when you find out the Father is a dead beat! Hopefully she has trusted family members to watch over them while she’s gone. She tried paying what she could. (something a lot of MEN aren’t MAN enough to face)Apparently the IRS don’t care about managers who rip you off, they want theirs now.She is trying to get rid of them so she can move on. Racist my ass! She is a proud Black African AMERICAN WOMAN. You are a piece of crap!

@Sonia…finally, a reasonably intelligent statement. As for the rest of you “thinkers”, please check the accuracy of your responses (grammar/spelling as well). Ignorance knows no RACE, obviously!

Prejudice = ideas, beliefs and feelings (at the individual level)

Discrimination = acting on one’s ideas, beliefs and feelings (at the individual level)

Racism = social, political and cultural power to ensure systemic discrimination of entire groups of people across the board. Engrained in the very fabric of society – the unspoken code/ modus operandi(outside of the individual, not the workings of one single person – but many people acting as blind agents in accordance of this code).

First off, black’s can be racist. The president of the united states is black, so thus we are in a position to cause racism. Saying only whites can be racist is a cop out and pure ignorance. This is 2013, my cousin is black and is very wealthy, while some of my white friends are as poor as dirt. Get off ya reverse racist seats, get over yourselves, and realized yeah mostly white people buy hiphop and rap albums, so when you go against the whites, your career may end. We need not to just say oh it’s racism, maybe we should look into things deeper than what Rev Sharpton would say.

Do anyone else feel like she got trapped? Now she’s dealing with the penal system and got pulled into the music industry’s b.s. with a Sony deal. I really feel for her and hopes she makes it out of this ok.

Not a single one of these comments talk about the actual article — which makes them a complete waste of time.

Arguments of semantics aside, how does more than $970,000 not satisfy a tax debt on 1.8 million? That’s even more than the 40% luxury tax that’s imposed profits exceeding a certain amount.

There is something substantial missing from this article.
