Video: Jay Z – ‘Picasso Baby’

Jay Z and Marina Abramović

Jay Z continues to set new rules. The hip-hop mastermind presents the performance art film for “Picasso Baby,” the Timbaland-produced single off his No. 1 album Magna Carta…Holy Grail. The 10-minute film, directed by Mark Romanek, premiered on HBO earlier this evening.

The Roc Nation mogul shot the visuals at Pace Gallery in New York last month. Spectators including Wale, Taraji P. Henson, Rosie Perez, Judd Apatow, Alan Cumming, Magazeen, Fab 5 Freddy, and the “grandmother of performance art” Marina Abramović gathered around as he took turns interacting with them in the all-white space.

“Concerts are pretty much performance art,” explains Jay, who shot a video for “Holy Grail” with Justin Timberlake in L.A. this week. “In a smaller venue, it’s a bit more intimate so you feel the energy of the people.”

Watch the “modern day Pablo Picasso” unveil his visual masterpiece below.

@what, since when does high class rich people loving fine art, want to hear a n8ggah rapping about ghetto life. these 2 dont mix.

    Chloé Magnolia Reply:

Which is exactly why this is art. It shifts your perception of things. These two things can’t mix? “Watch me.”

@Paradise, not in the music medium which is what marii most likely meant. THIS is why this man has been around for so long & will continue to be … he makes people question the preconceived notions of what a “rapper” should be, sound like, act like, think like or rap like. Look at that crowd, aside from the guests (taraji, alan, george, etc there are fans of different races, ages, backgrounds) J continues to set the bar for himself and others. The piece was artistic & I enjoyed … congrats J! Can’t wait for the Holy Grail video (one of my favorite songs this year). #limitless #whatboundaries

    Very interesting!

It would’ve been more interesting if he wasn’t “Jay-Z”. The focus wasn’t the performance art, it was the fact that celebrity rapper/business mogul Jay-Z was doing a mini-concert of sorts.

An unknown or little known rapper doing the same, exact thing in an art gallery without the fanfare of celebrity would have been truly something.

    But Kudos to him.

    @Oil & Water, AMEN
I don’t need another rapper lose himself in self adolization infront of a camera disguized as art!
This is a missed opportunity for all the involved
    It was edited.
This could have been a one take live shot!
All these paid and corporate people who were invited, were also part of then performance.
    I wonder if he noticed!
But hey Fab 5 must have thought: ‘I have seen better in 1980ies at Andy Warhol’s Factory!’

Fact of the matter is, Jay-Z made all these people come out, because these people were aware of what he does and thought it was probably an interesting thing to witness and be a part of.

Whether it’s art or not, to each his own. I know I couldn’t get a room to move like that if I were by myself. Way too intimidating.

When I went to his Watch the Throne concert with Kanye, he was definitely the better performer out of the two. It doesn’t matter how far from the stage you were, you could feel dude’s energy. To me, that’s art. That’s something not a lot of people can do.

Nothing is disguised. He’s just showing you what he came up with. And I think it’s pretty dope too.

I think this is innovative, and the fact that a Jay-Z music people is opening a discussion about art among people, I think it’s safe to say that he’s helping bring both the cultures closer together, and exposing some people to a form of entertainment they were previously unfamiliar with. Artists like Hov are necessary, because he pushes the envelope. He’s evolved beyond your stereotypical generic rap artist.

I loved the video but I really wouldn’t call it innovative, he just took an old Marina Abramović performance piece & made it into a music video, but I like the concept.
