Kanye West and Drake

Drake brought out Kanye West at last night’s OVO Fest and the moment was not only a highlight for his fans, but for Drake himself. Fresh off the stage, Drizzy opened up about the “most important moment in [his] life.”

The Young Money MC and G.O.O.D. Music chief had not spoken or rehearsed before the surprise set. “In rap, sometimes we don’t communicate enough. It’s extremely competitive,” Drake told Revolt TV. “Me and Kanye we hadn’t even talked before we got onstage together. We didn’t rehearse or anything like that. I didn’t even see him. That was my first time seeing him when I got onstage.”

Kanye praised his young peer onstage and performed “New Slaves,” “All of the Lights,” and “Can’t Tell Me Nothing.” “There’s been a lot of rappers that came in the game that wasn’t able to do something like this for their city,” said ‘Ye. “Me and Hov would’ve never made Watch the Throne if this ni**a wasn’t putting pressure on us like that.”

Drake was still processing the glorious moment when he met up with reporters backstage. “His words—that was a moment I clicked out,” he said. “I don’t know if this is real or not. I’m not sure if I’m still sleeping from the morning or if I’m dreaming about how this is working out. Probably the most important moment in my life to date.”

He hopes their onstage union will open the door for more opportunities. “At the end of the day, I do look up to ‘Ye. He’s a major influence, if not the biggest influence in my career, so to hear him say that and just to feel like, alright who knows where this goes, maybe we do music now like we were supposed to do or maybe we just start talking more. It’s a good thing.”

Drake called Kanye his role model while on stage at Toronto’s Molson Canadian Amphitheatre. “I meant every word. He’s been a mentor to me even if we didn’t talk like how me and Puff talk or how me and Wayne talk, Kanye’s just mentored me through his decisions,” he explained.

“I study the game overall, but I studied him very closely obviously. I’m 26. You mention names like Jay, Wayne, Kanye, those guys are just gods to me. It’s just crazy to be on stage with him and share that moment. We got to stand there together. We had the pose going on and everything. It was crazy. What I loved about it was it was organic.”
