Drake’s new single “Hold On, We’re Going Home” has already cracked the top 10 on iTunes, but he hopes it will transcend the charts and become “timeless.”

Fresh off the stage at his 4th Annual OVO Fest in Toronto, the Canadian rapper talked up the Noah “40” Shebib-produced record.

“It’s just me and 40 channeling our Quincy Jones/Michael Jackson production duo,” he told MTV News. “Obviously no offense to the greats, I know we’re not anywhere near that—it’s just us kinda doing our thing, humbly attempting.”

The R&B song is quite a departure from his hip-hop anthems “Started From the Bottom” and “5AM in Toronto.” “It’s not a rap record,” he explained. “It’s not ‘Versace,’ it’s not ‘Started From the Bottom.’ In approaching this album I was like man, it would be great if we had a record that was played at weddings in 10 years or that people that are away from their families in the army could listen to. Something that just [has] timeless writing, timeless melody.”

The track features vocals from Majid Jordan, a new group signed to his OVO label. “Majid is singing on the record with me and Jordan is his production partner. It’s a great record,” he added.

Despite his past success, he was still uncertain how it would be received. “I’m nervous and excited and all these things about it. I’ve never really put out a record like this before, so we’ll see how it goes.”

“Hold On, We’re Going Home” will appear on Drake’s upcoming third album Nothing Was the Same, due September 17.
