New Music: Big Sean f/ Kendrick Lamar & Jay Electronica – ‘Control’

Big Sean and Kendrick Lamar

Big Sean drops an explosive leftover from his Hall of Fame recording sessions. On the seven-and-a-half-minute track “Control,” which didn’t make the album because of a clearance sample, the G.O.O.D. Music rapper goes off, but it’s Kendrick Lamar who steals the show with his venomous verse.

“I’m Makaveli’s offspring/ I’m the king of New York/ King of the coasts/ One hand I juggle them both,” raps the Compton MC over the No I.D.-produced beat.

He also takes aim at his peers and no one’s safe. “And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big K.R.I.T, Wale, Pusha T, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky, Drake, Big Sean, Jay Electron, Tyler, Mac Miller/ I got love for you all, but I’m tryna murder you ni**as/ Tryna make sure your core fans never heard of you ni**as.”

Clear the way for Kendrick and his path of destruction.

If you’ve ever listened to artists such as Necro, Ill Bill, Jedi Mind Tricks, Immortal Technique, Saigon, Apathy, Celph Titled, R.A. Th Rugged Man, Last Emperor, Slaine and Tech N9ne then you should know that verses like this and better happen all the time. It’s just not commercially viable to make Hip-Hop with substantial lyrical content anymore so many artists dumb themselves down and forgo lyrics like the ones heard above and go for the almighty dollar. $$$ may talk, but bullshit still sounds like bullshit..

That verse was straight fire! I hate people trying to turn this into a diss thing. Pure Hip Hop people. Fans are so used to mainstream rap they forgot a big part of Hip Hop is battling, working on your craft, getting ya bars up. Kendrick was probably tired of waiting around for it and just said the shit himself.
    Bravo.

I believe Kendrick Lamar is the best lyrical rapper in hip hop right now, but Kendrick Lamar has a very, long way to go before I start calling him a hip hop legend. If Kendrick Lamar continues to put out great classic hip hop albums for the next 10 years, then I will believe Kendrick Lamar is one of the top 100 greatest rappers of all-time in hip hop history and music history. Kendrick Lamar has the potential to be one of the greatest rappers of all-time, but Kendrick Lamar needs to put out more great music.

I believe Kendrick Lamar’s GOOD Kid MAAD City album is the best hip hop album of both 2012 and 2013. I believe Kendrick Lamar’s GOOD Kid MAAD City album is a masterpiece and a great classic hip hop album. Kendrick Lamar’s GOOD Kid MAAD City album has gotten great critical reviews, universal acclaim, a 91 percent on Metacritic, and great commerical success by being certified gold and certified platinum by selling over 900,000 copies, or 1 million copies right now. Kendrick Lamar deserves the hype and praise he gets right now, but he can’t lose his buzz by making bad music in the near future. As long as Kendrick Lamar continues to put out great music, he will last longer than most rappers in hip hop right now.

The problem with hip hop right now is that there are a lot of very, terrible rappers who are putting out terrible mainstream hip hop music and the radio continues to overplay garbage all the time. Rappers like Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, Future, Waka Flocka Flame, French Montana, Meek Mill, Nicki Minaj, Soulja Boy, Gucci Mane, Travis Porter, Juicy J, and other terrible rappers are putting out very bad, terrible, horrible mainstream hip hop music that continues to get major radio airplay everyday of the week. If those rappers continue to put out the same outdated music that is popular with biased mainstream music fans, biased mainstream hip hop fans, and the biased mainstream media for the next 5 years, none of those rappers will be relevant 10 years from now.

In response to Paul Broggan, I respect your opinion, but I totally disagree with you. Music is both subjective, and objective right now. It wouldn’t surprise me if Big Sean and Pusha T put out better music albums than Kanye West’s Yeezus album, but I don’t think they will put out better music. I still believe that Kanye West’s Yeezus album is one of the best music albums of 2013. Kanye West’s Yeezus album got great critical reviews, universal acclaim, a 85 percent on Metacritic right now, and sold over 300,000 copies in its first week out. Like I said before, Kanye West’s Yeezus album is a alternative rap/hip-hop/pop/acid house/industrial rock/progressive rock/alternative rock-n-roll album. I don’t believe that Kanye West made Yeezus album to please only mainstream hip hop fans and underground hip hop fans. I believe Kanye West made Yeezus album to please all unbiased music fans of different genres, while staying true to himself. One of the main biggest reasons why hip-hop fans hated Kanye West’s Yeezus album is because that album had no big-time mainstream hip-hop radio hits and no underground hip hop music that hip-hop fans are use to hearing all the time. Some people hate hearing music that they can’t relate to at all, no matter how great or terrible the music truly is.

I respect Kanye West for putting out great music albums like The College Dropout, Late Registration, Graduation, 808s and Heartbreak, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Watch The Throne, and Yeezus. All of Kanye West’s albums sound great, different, and interesting. Great rappers and music artists like Kanye West, Jay-Z, Nas, Eminem, and Andre 3000 have been able to stay relevant for more than 9 years or 10 years because they all put out great music. Great lyrical rappers like Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco, UGK, BIG K.R.I.T., Tech 9ine, Jay Electronica, and a few others will always be great lyrical rappers, but they will never be popular with biased mainstream hip hop fans because they refused to dumb down their music to please people who only listen to hip hop on the radio and TV. Kendrick Lamar’s verse on Control is the best hip hop verse of the year right now, but Kendrick Lamar needs to stay relevant for at least 10 years, and continue to make music that is different from others like Kanye West did, in order for him to be a great certified legend.
