New Music: Earl Sweatshirt f/ Frank Ocean – ‘Sunday’

Earl Sweatshirt and Frank Ocean

Earl Sweatshirt gets “painfully honest” on “Sunday” off his upcoming album Doris, but it’s Frank Ocean’s verse that is getting all the attention. The R&B crooner stunts (“Standing ovation at Staples/ I got my Grammys and gold”) and raps about his fight with Chris Brown on the melodic song.

“They called me soft in high school/ Thank God I’m jagged/ Forgot you don’t like it rough/ I mean he called me a faggot/ I was just calling his bluff/ I mean how anal am I gon’ be when I’m aiming my gun/ And why’s his mug all bloody/ That was a three on one,” he raps.

Doris also features Tyler, the Creator, Domo Genesis, Mac Miller, Vince Staples, and Casey Veggies.

Listen to “Sunday” below and stream the entire album on SoundCloud in advance of its August 20 release.

Just because it concerns a public figure, doesn’t mean that it can’t be assimilated in his music. Rap is about real life situations.

@Brina, took Chris Brown 6 years to get 1 Grammy.
it Frank Ocean 1 year to get 2

    [Reply]

    Meme Reply:

@what, 6 years isn’t a long time at all considering Chris has only been in the Industry 7 years and had been nominated consistently since his debut in 05. There are artist that have been in the industry twice as long as Chris who have NEVER won Grammy. Frank Ocean has been in the industry just as long as Chris, he’s just been behind the scenes writing for other artist with better voices. Frank has put out just as much music as Chris. Frank didn’t even get ANY mainstream attention until he wrote that letter about being in love with a man and everyone fell in love with him because he was so ‘brave’ to come out. He continuously uses his fight Chris Brown to get attention. He’s a stunt Queen. Karma already got him when he had to cancel his tour cuz he tore a vocal chord so he needs to chill before something else happens.

FYI: Chris has TWO double Platinum albums, has more nominations, Awards, and platinum singles than Frank Ocean has and the way R&b is selling now a days probably ever will! Frank Ocean got so much attention from the ridiculously over hyped Channel Orange yet it ONLY went Gold. Chris went double platinum on his FIRST album! Tell Frank to catch up!

@Meme, Chris brown has yet to drop a good album though. that’s why it took him so long. he doesn’t count as the artist who don’t have any who deserve one. the only reason he’s here is because of teenage girls
Frank’s and Odd Future’s entire catelog are better and more original than anything Chris Brown has ever released

    [Reply]

    Meme Reply:

@what, Chris yet to release a good album?!?! Oh…. is that why 4 out of 5 of his albums have been Grammy Nominated?!?! Oh ok. GTFOH! Only one artist in every category is gonna win, but EVERY artists that is nominated deserves to win including Chris! Otherwise he would not have been nominated and someone else would have taken his spot!

‘Teenage girls’ didn’t get Chris 16 Grammy Nominations and a win. ‘Teenage Girls’ didn’t get him 4 VMA’s, Billboard Music, AMA’, WMA’s etc. ‘Teenage girls’ didn’t get him to star in 5 films one of which he co-produced, Takers. Other than the Teen Choice Awards, ‘teenage girls’ don’t have that much power!

FYI: Chris has been praised by his industry peers such as Brandy, Janelle Monae, Jazmin Sullivan, Monica, Quincy Jones, LA Reed, R. Kelly, Jon B, Tank, and even his Idol MJ, who he performed in front of at the age of 17 at the World Music Awards, to name a few! It’s NOT just teenage girls that he appeals to!

The key to Chris success has ALWAYS been his talent! He can’t help it if he has good looks that appeal to teenage girls, it’s not his fault Franks unfortunate looking ass can’t use looks to his advantage.

FYI: Odd Future SUCKS ASS! They’re a bunch of devil worshipping moronic LAMES! The only people who like those fools are depressed people who sit around smoking weed all day complaining about how much they hate their lives! Thats why their lames asses NEVER get any mainstream attention & will ALWAYS remain struggling under ground artist! The only time Frank Ocean got any attention from mainstream was AFTER he came out of the closet! No one knew or cared who he was before then and even after all his hype of Channel Boring he STILL has yet to go platinum! Sad.

Frank Ocean will NEVER be as big an artist as Chris Brown! Deal with it!

    @Meme,
Chris brown received nominations because of popularity. 2 Chainz was nominated last year. does that mean his album was as good as The Roots and Nas?
16 year old girls are the exact reason why he got nominated.
you sound like you just discovered music last week. just because something is mainstream and popular doesn’t make it the best.
Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter 3 went platinum first week while it took Nas’ Illmatic 10 years to go platinum. does that mean Lil Wayne’s album is better even though Illmatic is considered one of the best Hip-Hop albums of all time?
Chris Brown can go platinum all he wants and get praised by peers all day. he’s yet to develop a great R&B or pop album on the level as artist before him.

frank may not has the platinum record yet(and like Illmatic it will go platinum at some point). but I bet you this. channel BORING(as you like to call it) will have a bigger influence on music 10 years from now than any Chris brown record

Tyler The Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, and Frank have received more critical acclaim with their albums than Chris Brown did with any album. if you want I can even pull up the sources for you.

I hope this is a lesson to you the
Being Mainstream and Popular DOES NOT make you better than everyone else

    Music lover Reply:

@Is it me or, True. It’s a lame attempt to outdo the other person when dissing each other. It’s also stupid to take offense to a person who adores and compliments your music and compares you to an equal amazing songwriter. Chris Brown has done the latter and Frank Ocean took offense, which is how their ongoing feud began.

The only times I hear about him is when he’s talking about chris or when he came out the closet. If he’s as talented as everyone says he should let that speak for itself. So far it seems he’s gotten most of his attention from exploiting situations.jmo

    [Reply]

    Chloé Magnolia Reply:

Of course those particular situations got more media coverage and attention. Drama attracts thrill seekers.

His name has been around way before his fight with Chris Brown and his open letter. His music, his work for other artists and his affiliation with Odd Future is what got him his name. The man is truely gifted with a talent that goes beyond just writing songs and performing them.

I’d say he doesn’t tolerate nonsense and he will say something when confronted with it, but he doesn’t exploit anything and exploitation is most certainly not what got him where he is today.

    [Reply]

    leya Reply:

@Chloé Magnolia, I dont think hes gifted.I think hes a nice writer for other artist but thats it.But u missed my point anyway.I know he has done those other thing but most people dont because he’s not letting his talent speak. They are only going to continue to hear about him when he talks about chris or him being gay because that how he came out as a solo artist. He chose to “reveal” that he was gay/bisexual right before his album and chooses to keep speaking on chris.Hes written for artist but is still new because hes a new solo artist. He letting this define him and if hes as talented as you say he shouldn’t

    [Reply]

    Chloé Magnolia Reply:

Him opening up about his sexuality was so he could prevent confusion about some of the material on “channel ORANGE”. He didn’t build an entire circus around it, the public did.

He keeps a low profile most of the time, so a lot of what you’re accusing him of just doesn’t click with his actual behavior.

As for him mentioning the fight in this verse, that’s his creative freedom. He’s not trashing Chris Brown’s name, he’s talking about a situation involving him.

I and plenty of others know that he’s not just messing around and it’s okay if you don’t feel the same way, because at the end of the day those things remain debatable.

If people decide to focus on what’s going on around him, that’s their business. Frank can’t control that and he shouldn’t limit his subject matters because of it.

    [Reply]

  9. WTF?!

I’m tired of this fool bringing up the fight with Chris to get sympathy! That shit was months ago, let it go! You didn’t press charges so stop acting like a victim now! How many times is he gonna ‘diss’ Chris in a song?! Lame!

I also find it really interesting how he gets offended when Chris supposedly called him a faggot during the fight but he’s not offended when Tyler the Ape and all those other OFWDJSBK fools use the word in their music and on twitter?! Frank is a hypocrite and needs to sit his ass down somewhere!

    [Reply]

    what Reply:

@WTF?!, rap music is about beef and disses, and more importantly LIFE. rappers(as well as singers) can choose to write about whatever events happened in their life how ever many times they please.
how many times has Chris Brown brought up past events in his life?
and Frank tells Tyler he doesn’t like that word when he’s around them

    [Reply]

    Tara Reply:

@WTF?!, OMG Yas! Tyler the Creature and all those other members of that group ALWAYS use the word faggot in their music but now Frank wants to play victim cuz he was called one! If it’s a problem when Chris says it then you need to be mad when your friends say it too! He’s a hypocrite!

I’m so tired of people claiming Chris is homophobic for using the word when they let countless other artist get away with it!

  10. what

I see rap-up doesn’t understand the concept of rap music. rap music is and has always been filled with disses and beefs.

    get over it

    [Reply]

    Music lover Reply:

@what, Yes indeed. Music is about stating how you feel and where you’ve been; however, we know Frank and Chris beef is much deeper than that, which is why they need to put aside their differences and talk about it like grown men should maybe have a few pioneer artists mediating their meeting. We don’t need another 2pac vs Biggie situation.

  11. Chloé Magnolia

I like the entire feel of the song. And Frank is a centipede, man.

I don’t understand why some people feel like he can’t speak about his brawl with Breezy. The only person who should catch feelings over that is Brown himself, if you ask me…

Frank Ocean is an amazing talent, but I don’t understand the logic of honoring a person you don’t like via a verse on a song. Squash it out in person – one on one without entourage – rather than on wax several months after the altercation. It’s about as weak as a man/woman breaking up with his/her mate via text message.

  15. Chasidy

How many times is he gonna keep bring this up? Everyone is on his nutsack cuz they don’t like Chris but if Chris had done this and was still dissing an artist MONTHS later y’all would be calling him all types of names. But since it’s Frank overrates Ocean y’all want to give him a pass? Hypocrites!

Though I did not know when this song was recorded – thanks to @what above, I stand by my argument. Young men who want to be perceived as mature need to carry themselves as such. Folks are quick to blame Chris for everything and, yes, he should be held accountable for HIS actions alone, the blame also goes to Frank and anyone who provoke, insults, and threatens Chris.
