Kendrick Lamar Leads BET Hip-Hop Awards Nominations

Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar may not be king of New York (depending on who you ask), but he is king of this year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards. The Compton MC reigns over the nominations for this year’s show.

Kendrick scored a whopping 14 nominations including Lyricist of the Year, MVP of the Year, and Album of the Year for his debut good kid, m.A.A.d city.

“It’s a privilege to be a part of it,” said Kendrick following the announcement. “For the most part, BET always acknowledges my talent and I always hold that as an honor, so I’m blessed.”

Drake follows with 13 nominations, while J. Cole earns 10 nods.

In the Album of the Year category, the nominees include Kendrick’s good kid, m.A.A.d city, J. Cole’s Born Sinner, Jay Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail, Nas’ Life Is Good, and Wale’s The Gifted.

Snoop Dogg will host this year’s show, which tapes on September 28 at Atlanta’s Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center and premieres October 15 at 8 p.m.

    WHAT KIND OF JADED BULLSHIT!!?
YOU MEAN TO TELL ME T.I. GOT NOMINATED FOR HUSTLER OF THE YEAR OVER NICKI MINAJ?!
FOR FUCKING WHAT? Because that’s the name of his label?
NO nigga! This is such a setback for women!
    Let’s run DOWN the list!
    1. Nicki brought in the new years making more money than any other entertainer for a party with 5 million, including BEYONCE!
    2. 12 million for American Idol
    3. High School, her single, charted & received plenty of radio play
    4. TAPOUT! HAS BEEN ON THE CHARTS FOR EVER AT THIS POINT!
    5. She has the most VIEWED performance in Billboard Awards History for her High School single.
    6. She’s making money shooting a MOVIE with CAMERAN DIAZ!
    7. Working on a clothing line that’ll release THE SAME MONTH of the awards airing (october)
    8. She’s broken 2 records in the UK for her album sales.
    9. She has the HIGHEST selling fragrance from an urban artist this year with a second one on the way
    10. She has 17 features this year THUS FAR
    11. ANNNNNNNND She working on the THIRD ALBUM IN THE MIDST OF ALL OF THIS!!

But T.I. got it over her? Kanye West got it over her with his 10 song album, 1 video, and an overpriced clothing line?! 0_o BET IS MAAAAD SEXIST!! That don’t even make sense to leave her out of that…. Nicki don’t even need to attend for this disrespect!

So Nicki Minaj isn’t nominated for hustler of the year? Kendrick is overrated. Made you look award? He doesn’t have style. Video director of the year? Asap nominated but not Colin Tilley? Congrats to Nicki Minaj who at least got a nomination out of this male dominated industry. Lil Kim’s face should’ve been nominated tho. Congratulations to all the nominees.

    [Reply]

    Andy Reply:

@channel_ROMAN, Kendrick is an overrated rapper as a WHOLE. He is a beast lyricist, nice delivery and rhymes but doesn’t have much stage presence IN MY OPINION. Hope Nicki will not go to the award show.

@channel_ROMAN, Sqqueer PLEASE ! You stan for the worst thing to happen to black women since slavery! Nicki Minaj is a joke and the only people that think enough of her to even take her serious are her severely delusional Stan’s. I don’t expect someone who Stan’s for her to understand Kendrick Lamar or why his buzz is concurrent. 2 full length albums as an Indie artist generated so much interest and demand for K.Dot that Interscope found him and signed him. At a time while hip hop has been at his lowest because of artists like YOUR FAV, Trinidad James, 2 Chainz, French M, etc, he rised and that’s why you bitches ‘can’t understand’. You will deal!

She’s underrated for her skills as a lyricist, which is sad because she’s better than 93% of the males. She can be a little short in her range of topics, but the only thing she leaves out that the others add in is
    A.Extreme detail on her struggle
(She has them but they rarely get their due attention)
B.Love/Passion for someone other than YM

I agree with their other categories for the most part the way they are, but it’s blatant disregard for a females success to put dudes like TI and Kanye in the category for hustler. Kanye BEEN stopped hustling. And WHAT has TI done worthy of that nomination? Look at that list I put up because it’s NOTHING but a list of FACTS! She deserves to be in that Hustler of the Year category. NO ONE should deny that.

Kendrick Lamar deserved to be the leader for the most nominations at the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards. I am very happy that Kendrick Lamar is the leader for the most nominations at the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards this year. A lot of people who are calling Kendrick Lamar overrated fail to see the cultural impact Kendrick Lamar made on hip hop in 2013. Kendrick Lamar’s GOOD Kid MAAD City album was the best hip hop album of both 2012 and 2013. No hip hop album in 2012 and 2013 was better than Kendrick Lamar’s GOOD Kid MAAD City album.

I loved J. Cole’s Born Sinner album, I loved Jay-Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail album, and I believe Nas’ Life Is Good album was a very, great album, but Kendrick Lamar’s GOOD Kid MAAD City album is a very, great amazing masterpiece that will stand the test of time. I believe Nicki Minaj should had been nominated for Hustler of the Year because she has gotten a lot of endorsements and she is the only current female rapper to make the Forbes list. Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid MAAD City album got great critical reviews, a 91 percent on Metacritic, and sold over 1 million copies by being certified platnium. Kendrick Lamar earned his way to the top of hip hop this year.

@TRA, to tell you the true,i have no prob with Kendric noms,he deserve them, what me and other fans of nicki have a prob with,is that nicki should have got a nom in the hustler of the year category, and if a nicki fan is saying Kendric is overrated, that person don’t talk for everyone of her fans..and anyone saying that Kendric is overrated isn’t automatically a nicki fan it could be a random person.like i said only prob we have is that nicki should have got a nom in that hustler category, other than that it,s all good.

@Os, I have a problem that Nicki’s lyrics are not being recognized by BET. Her hustle is well known and definitely should be recognized, but she has been on another level this year IMO lyrically on features. She should be nominated for Sweet 16 and Best Lyricist at least.

  42. Kendrick Lamar Leads The BET Hip-Hop Awards Nominations: Morning Mix - Music Find

[...] :: Kendrick Lamar leads the BET Hip-Hop Awards nominations. The kind of New York — he has the receipts! — scored a whopping 14 noms. Drake snared 13, while J. Cole got 10. [Rap-Up] [...]

Lets give it a try imo:-

Best Hip-Hop Video: J. Cole f/ Miguel – Power Trip

Perfect Combo Award: J. Cole f/ Miguel – Power Trip

Best Live Performer: Their all dope live so any of them could win this

Lyricist of the Year: Kendrick Lamar

Video Director of the year: They all Suck but i’d pick Director X.

DJ of the Year: DJ Khaled (He’s had a few big tracks this year)

Producer of they year: Pharrell Williams

MVP Of The Year: Either Kendrick or Drake

Track Of The Year: Don’t Kill My Vibe

Album Of The Year: Good Kid M.a.a.d city (I think everybody will be shocked if this doesn’t win)

Rookie Of The Year: Joey Bada$$ (Earl isn’t a rookie!)

Hustler of the year: Jay Z (for that Samsung deal)

Made You Look Award: Kendrick (in a good way), Kanye (in a bad way – Yeezus was terrible)

Best Club Banger: Drake – Started From The Bottom

Best Mixtape: Terrible list but from them i’d go with Chance The Rapper – Acid Rap

Sweet 16(Best Featured Verse): Drake – Versace remix (was Kendrick’s verse on Control too late to get nominated? That will probably win next year because of the huge buzz it’s created)

Impact Track: Jay Z – Holy Grail or Macklemore – Same Love (J. Cole – Crooked Smile hasn’t blown up yet but it could well win this next year)

People’s Champ Award: J. Cole f/ Miguel – Power Trip (J. Cole found that first single that had the mix of radio appeal to bring in new fans yet at the same time kept it real for his core fan base with the reference to an older song “dreams” from his mixtape days – something Work Out failed to do.)

I really hope that Nicki Minaj doesn’t attend this awards show after this disrespect. She has been featured on so many songs this year, and her verses have been fire. She shows up on tracks and outshines her collaborators in show-stealing fashion. She has been slaying it all year! Not only should she have been nominated for hustler of the year, but she should also be nominated for lyricist of the year and sweet 16. As voted by the fans on 106 & Park not so long ago, Nicki should at least be given a nod for her lyrics.
