Justin Timberlake Defends Miley Cyrus, Talks Drake Collaboration

Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake made the radio rounds during his trip to New York. Fresh off his epic performance at the VMAs, the pop superstar stopped by Angie Martinez’ show on Hot 97 to discuss his friendship with Beyoncé and Jay Z, collaborations with Drake, Nas, and Jay Z, and his plans after The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2 drops on September 30. He also weighed in on Miley Cyrus’ infamous VMA performance. Find out what he had to say.

On hanging out with Jay Z and Beyoncé after their New York show: “I did get both of them standing on a couch. Me and my wife get along with them so well. For all the stuff that surrounds us, they’re so normal and just nice people. They’re just good people, my kinda people.”

On winning the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs: “To even be mentioned in the shadow of the GOAT, to even be mentioned in the shadow of MJ… That’s when you’re like, ‘Whoa!’ It’s humbling. It feels sacred in a way.”

On Miley Cyrus’ VMA performance: “It’s the VMAs. It’s not the Grammys. We’re talking about Madonna in a wedding dress humping the stage, we’re talking about Britney doing a striptease. This cycle is not uncommon. … I’m saying she’s young, take it easy on her. I think ['We Can't Stop'] is jammin’ when I hear it on the radio. I like all the bears. To me, it’s almost like if something like that doesn’t happen at the VMAs, then I feel like it was boring.”

On collaborating with Nas, Jay Z, and Timbaland on “Sinatra at the Sands”: “Originally I think it was something that Tim and I… Tim obviously did the beat and I wrote a hook on it where I sort of sang in the style of Frank Sinatra. I didn’t know that Jay was gonna be on it. I haven’t heard it done, I’ve only heard what Tim and I did together. It’s a mid. It gives you that feeling though of this easygoing… I don’t want to say too much about it ’cause I haven’t heard the end of it.”

On collaborating with Drake on “Cabaret”: “Drake and I have been trying to get at each other about doing a record. I think we’ll probably end up doing more as time goes by as well… He killed it.”

On his next album: “I don’t know that I would take as big a break this time because it really comes down to, do you have something to say with music… And if you don’t, wait until you have something to say.

“I have a lot of ideas about even beyond this double album where a sound could go from the songs we’ve just done, and funny enough, had conversations with Tim and Pharrell about it ’cause I played Pharrell a lot of this stuff before Tim and I were finished with it as well. I’m in a musical space for sure.”

@Brian, how is he a “dickrider” JT does well on his own he needs to ride nothing. People love him because of his talents and he is a driven person you don’t have to like J.T if you choose not to but at least respect him and respect miley you don’t need to listen to either person but you don’t need to bash them either.

I love Justin but I do not agree with his endorsement of this bitch’s appropriation of ratchet culture and use of black women onstage as props.

i dont care if she came from Disney channel or anything like that, it just doesn’t seem natural to me. You have artist like Ariana Grande who has always liked rap and things like that but u dont see her twerking on stage.

With Miley it just came out of nowhere and now she’s everywhere doing it over and over again. She IS trying to hard to be accepted in the hip hop community that it puts people off.

    just sayin

It’s obvious that Miley Cyrus did what she did during the performance to get attention, and guess what – she got it. That’s all everyone has been talking about and will be talking about. If you don’t like her then just don’t support her and HOPEFULLY she’ll be old news soon and go away. Haha. (:

Comparing Miley to Madonna and her legendary performance in 1985?
Justin the queen will not be pleased!
    Do your homeworks:
In 1985 the first row in the audience alone gave you and your contemporaries a run for your (auto tuned) money!
    STFU, Justin!
    Thanks

@fa, you have NO comprehension I see. he wasn’t comparing Miley to Madonna … he was comparing the performances for the sake of “shock value”. most of these artists then and now have to have either a gimmick or something shocking to promote their project when they lack solid vocal ability & sound performance skills when live (see Madonna, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Miley, Justin Beiber, One Direction, etc) everyone’s talking about miley, lady gaga was running around on stage w/ a shell bra & thong on … same difference.
p.s. Justin is a LIVE performer, so you can stfu. your opinion means less than nothing, that’s why you’re NOT being interviewed on a popular radio station.

@fa, J.T doesn’t use auto-tune . He is not saying Miley is like Madonna he is saying Madonna has done crazy things in her performance at the VMA’s it’s not unusual.

He’s almost sounds scared to have an opinion. If anyone should be getting that award based on their videography and legacy from this generation besides Britney, it should be Usher or Eminem.

@Tonya, WHAT? Eminem? I mean, I like the dude, and his rapping skills are off the chart good! But, What? Eminem?

How about defending the integrity of your craft? Miley’s performance was idiotic and people responding to that the way they do is human nature.

If you turn yourself into a freakshow, this is what happens.

I am a huge fan of J.T. I respect him and enjoy his music and movies. I think he is right to defend Miley and all you people judging shouldn’t. If you don’t approve don’t watch it’s the VMA’s not Kids choice awards. Also J.T is not overrated or over-hyped he is very successful because he works hard and is talented. Respect his gift don’t hate on it. I will defend J.T til the end. I’m one devoted fan.
