New Music: Justin Timberlake – ‘TKO’

TKO

Following “Take Back the Night,” Justin Timberlake is back for another round with “TKO,” the second single off The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2. After teasing with Instagram videos throughout the day, he debuts the 7-minute song, produced by Timbaland.

“I’m out for the count/ Yeah girl, you knock me out/ It’s just a TKO,” sings JT.

The follow-up to the best-selling album of 2013 arrives Sept. 30 featuring appearances from Drake (“Cabaret”) and Jay Z (“Murder”).

“The songs that I released in March just reminded me of summertime a little bit more and the songs that are coming out this month felt a little darker so they made me feel like the fall/winter collection,” Timberlake told Ryan Seacrest.

He is expected to debut some of the new tracks at this weekend’s iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas.

@wassupp, I know but I don’t even think it’s Justin’s fault. Timbaland’s production is really repetitive. And I hate that he feels like he has to join in vocally on Every JT track. Just sit back and be a (producer). We don’t need to hear you.

@Deejay, this u do agree with. I don’t feel like Tim have to join in vocally every single time. The dream tries to do the same thing. I feel like some I’d these producers are so arrogant, they can’t stay behind the scene. They want to be in front as well. I’m so over Tim and his arrogant ass

“She killed me with that coochie coo”?
Justin please stop working with Timbalands tired ass and get back in the studio with Pharell.
The song is ok tho. JT is king and his music should reflect that a little bit more.

It’s ok at best. I can’t get into JT this time around. I feel like at this his and Tim work is sounding too repetitive. I feel like he should have work with other ppl this time. I also feel like putting out these albumsontjs apart was a horrible idea.

All his songs are starting to sound the same..i’ll pass on this song..he needs to stop being so “safe” and venture out to different produers because sooner or later people are going to get tired of this dude

@Girl Bye, I think the first part of the sequel is pretty different from anything he did, so he might want to bring a little bit of his old sound to this album.

He’s album is going to go platinum anyway so you losers might as well sit back and watch. He has the best selling album of the year and with part 2 about to come out he’ll just extend that. You tired of him? Well too damn bad because he’s not going anywhere :)

@Speechless, so we are losers becuz we are bored with 10 identical sounding singles? Get the fuk outta here. If u like it then buy it. But I choose how I want to spend my money and it will not be on JT this time around. Maybe he will go platnium in his first week but it wouldn’t be becuz of me

Dope track! JT’s name carries so much weight that he could release the blandest track and sing a curse word every 15 seconds and he would still sell. I understand exactly what he’s saying in regards to the darker tone and it’s audibly evident; however, had he opted to release THIS as the first single from the first part of 20/20, there would have been much less backlash and comparison to Robin Thicke.

Bring us 10 more Tunnel Visions!!

I’m in love with TKO, it sounds new, fresh, but also familiar.

Some people don’t like Timbaland on it and talk like he’s on every JT song, but I didnt hear him that much on 20/20 part 1.

I like Justin songs like Cry Me A River, My Love, Tunnel Vision, What Goes Around and Mirrors, so lets hope he brings more of those.

    Can’t wait for next week!

First, Tim didn’t appear really at all on 20/20 outside of “Body Count”, which was a Target exclusive.

Second, this sounds almost nothing like anything on 20/20 part 1. Everything was much slower, a going for a more smooth R&B feel whereas it seems this album will be much more Hip-hop influenced.

I agree, Timbaland seems to have gotten too comfortable and maybe their friendship is part of the problem. Very interested to hear the Drake track soon though.

Amazing Song.Laughing at idiots that think his music and Timbo’s production is repetitive. Go and Listen to a Rick Ross or Lil Wayne album or 2 Chainz, or Waka Flocka….. (I can keep going) and tell me who’s repetitive?? Don’t worry JT, you’ll be Double Plat again, just to prove these haters wrong!

@Gaz, what do sales have to do with critical acclaim though? you shallw music fans are what is bad for the industry. Just because music sells does not make it critically respectable. get your head out of your ass. stop worrying about how much money these singers make like they pay your rent and start listening to music critically like a mature adult. acting like a song going platinum means people must like it. grow the fuck up. cant stand you popularists.

Loving this track. Definitely has a darker, more sinister feel, from the beat to the harmonies, and the melody JT creates over the track can be downright chilling at times. While I agree Timbaland needs to shut up time to time (the repetitive coochie-coo line is rather annoying), his production on this is finally back to where he was at in his prime. JT and Timbaland are a modern day Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones: everyone is trying to elevate their games to the level JT/Timbo are at…and failing. This is redemption after a mediocre lead single. Can’t wait to hear the rest of the album.

Eh, I’m not really feeling this one or “Take Back The Night”. The singles from his last album were on point, but I think I’ll skip purchasing this one unless the album as a whole is good. Maybe I’m just burnt out on his music, two releases in one year is exhausting.

    [Reply]

  25. Aton

This and “Take Back the Night” are just good/ok to me. I remember JT saying that the body of songs recorded for both 20/20 part 1 & 2 were done at the same time. I’m guessing that part 2 will be the left overs or B-Sides that didn’t make part 1. The album will be good but I have a feeling that we’ve heard the standout tracks from this session (I hope I’m wrong tho).

@Timi, Timbaland had a small part in Justified, but The Neptunes handled a larger part of Justin’s solo debut. I would love to have a whole album in the vein of “Like I Love You” or “Rock Your Body”.

    @Ice,

    1. Timbaland practically gave Pharrell his inspiration, which can be argued, but one thing you cannot argue is that he gave him his START and set him off on his CAREER. This is simply fact.
    2. Timbaland was more instrumental in directing the direction of Justified, while Pharrell and Chad Hugo did most of the production work. However, one can argue that one of the most important tracks in Timbaland’s career was Cry Me a River – quantity over quality.
    3. Timbaland WAS Futuresex/Love-sounds
    4. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. That being said, Timbaland’s sound with JT HAS INDEED evolved, just ever so slightly and never fully deviating from the norm. A modern classic was created in Suit & Tie and that is nothing like Cry Me A River or Mirrors.

Lol at these comments Tim’s music sounding the same look at the man’s discography his sound has changed now from back in the Jodeci days. Some of y’alls new favorite producers might not be in the game for long you need to evolve. Besides Tim Pharrell would have been nice too Danja also

  28. ohno

Not Justin’s best song…I think Justin repeats himself so much because he doesn’t have the vocals to be more diverse, he stays in his pop/rnb/hiphop falsetto-based lane and it works for him. Like Justin could never sing a song like “Gorilla” by Bruno Mars and be believable because Bruno’s vocal skills far exceed his. Justin is smart with his music and makes sure it compliments his strengths.

Also, 20/20 Pt. 2 IS NOT (READ: NOT) A DIFFERENT ALBUM. IT IS THE SAME AS 20/20 Pt. 1 (HENCE THE Pt. 1 and Pt. 2). They were recorded TOGETHER.
