Drake’s ‘Nothing Was the Same’ Debuts at No. 1

Drake

Drake is back on top. The Toronto MC not only has the No. 1 album in the country, he also has the second-largest sales week of the year with Nothing Was the Same.

The third album from the 26-year-old debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 658,000 copies sold in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The only album to sell more copies in a week this year was Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience, which opened with 968,000 in March.

Nothing Was the Same also marks Drake’s best week ever. His sophomore album, 2011’s Take Care, launched at No. 1 with 631,000, while his 2010 debut Thank Me Later posted first-week sales of 447,000.

Led by the top 10 singles “Started From the Bottom” and “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” NWTS also earns the biggest week for any hip-hop album since Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV bowed at No. 1 with 964,000 in September 2011.

Justin Timberlake is expected to knock Drake from the No. 1 spot next week with The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2. Early estimates have the album selling 325,000 copies in its opening week.

I thought he would sell more, there was a lot of hype. I’m not a big fan of the album but well done nonetheless.

Amazing accomplishment for a hip artist. That album is so amazing. His music is classic, I still listen to the other 2 albums….I can say I still listen to any other hip hop album that was release in the last 5 years. He is truly the best, if u think otherwise ur simply a hater.

@Meme, That’s the problem with hip hop fans these days. I also like drake, yet I don’t believe that someone who doesn’t like his music is ‘simply a hater’. I don’t appreciate people who just comment ‘drake’s can go suck a dick’ but if they didn’t like the album and say it with arguments that make sense, they helped creating a debate. Because yes contrary to what you and the ‘dickriders’ believe there are a lot of bad things on there. Take care was far better, I get that he tried to make a cohesive effort by making songs that fit together like ‘wu tang forever’ and ‘own it’ but it just ends up being one decent song and a bad one, and there are a lot of fillers that follow the same formula. And him trying to be more in touch with his egotrip side doesn’t help. The fact that he didn’t had the help of the weeknd, that gave him five songs on the last lp, didn’t help either.

@Mr Burns, I respect ur argument, but it sounds like u were hoping to hear a take care part 2. if so i get why u were disappointed with nwts; however, drake never promised to give us take care part dos that’s y the album is called nwts. so i advice u open ur mind, and stop trying to impose ur opinions on others like myself who adore this album(and feel its his best work). also, give the songs some more listens, they might grow on u…it took me like 3 weeks to fall in love with started so…

@cchick,@Mr Burns, I just made a comment saying that the problem with hip hop fans is that they try to impose their vision as a fact. And then you advice me to open up my mind and stop trying to impose my vision ? I didn’t try to do that. I’m just saying that that is my vision of the album and I respect someone thinking otherwise, and I’ll never say ‘ur simply a hater’ if you don’t like it. Your saying that it’s called ‘nothing was the same’ for a reason and that I was expecting a take part 2. No I wasn’t, I’d like for him to freshen things up and that the quality still stays the same or better. But everything was practically the same, with less songs and less focus. For example ‘furtest thing’, it’s a nice song, yet it is exactly what you expect from drake. I think it’s quite blend, and doesn’t have much staying power. Worst behaviour is one of those moments where yes drake changes his style. It just comes off as drake imitating a french montana and having a very weird accent. If nwts had 13 songs with the same level as ‘too much’ or tuscan leather it would have been a great album, perhaps even his best work I think.

What a foolish remark. I think otherwise and I happen to like Drake. You hip-hop newbies are hilarious but I know you’re a troll so folks should take what you say with a grain of salt.

It’s crazy how his sales keep getting better with each album he releases. I never really expected that to happen to be honest. When he first dropped “Take Care” back in 2010 I thought he would soon fizzle but I was WRONG! Congrats to him.
