Kendrick Lamar Crushes the Competition with BET Hip-Hop Awards Cypher

Kendrick Lamar

He killed “Control.” And Kendrick Lamar once again proved why he’s untouchable during his cypher at the BET Hip-Hop Awards. Following his fellow TDE members SchoolBoy Q, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, and Isaiah Rashad, the Compton MC stepped to the mic and left a bloody path in his wake.

He took subliminal shots at Drake (“Nothing’s been the same since they dropped ‘Control’/ And tucked a sensitive rapper back in his pajama clothes”) and showed who’s boss (“Hold up, wait a minute, your career ain’t shit unless you got some Kendrick in it”).

Watch the cypher below and see why King Kendrick deserves the crown.

@Timberlake, What? Everyone, black and white knows that Eminem runs the show when he drops an album. Kendrick is getting hyped as “king” but it is only over the new-school rap artist. That doesn’t put him in the same league as Eminem, Jay-Z, or Kanye West.

So I can feel your racial frustration on the limited choice’s you have with white rappers.

@Timberlake, Please quit listening to hip-hop. No one care what you think. It is obvious that you are a hater, lame, and wack. I bet you did not start listening to hip hop until the emergence of a “white rapper.” Eminem is dope, and he is a god on the mic. However, Kendrick spits things that you will never be able to understand since you have your white glasses on. My suggestion is to go buy some metal, take a walk around the mall, pet your cat, or go give your grammy a hug, bro. Hip Hop is not for you!

@Timberlake, How dare you mention Nas, Rakim, or PAC! If you cannot understand the significance of an artist like Kendrick, again, please stop listening to Hip Hop. Kendrick is going to make everyone get their bars up, and that is not only good for Hip Hop, but it is also good for the culture. All of the greats appreciate what Kendrick is doing, and every time he spits he needs to be trying to murder everyone who has ever picked up a mic. As I stated earlier, you need to find a new genre of music to listen to. I hear that Country has great lyrics, and to complete your preference, the majority of the lyricists are white.

@Marin7, You are right on so many levels. In the end tho Kendrick will have the Crown! Drake makes radio hits. Kendrick been dropping classics on his first album. #ijs

    [Reply]

    TRA Reply:

@Marin7, I believe Drake is a great music artist, a great rapper, and a great singer. I believe Drake’s Thank Me Later album, Drake’s Take Care album, and Drake’s Nothing Was The Same album is three of the top 50 best hip-hop albums of this decade right now. I give Drake a lot of credit for winning the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album at the 2013 Grammy Awards for Drake’s Take Care album. Drake has achieved great commercial success and good critical acclaim in his music career right now. As much as I love Drake’s music, I believe Kendrick Lamar is a better lyrical rapper than Drake right now, and Kendrick Lamar still has the chance to become even greater when it comes to being a lyrical genius which is downright great for hip-hop and downright scary for other rappers right now.

I know a lot of people are going to disagree with me, but I believe Kendrick Lamar is already a great rapper, and I don’t believe Kendrick Lamar is overrated at all. Kendrick Lamar’s GOOD Kid M.A.A.D. City album has gotten great critical reviews, and great commercial success by getting a 91 percent on Metacritic and selling over 1 million copies right now. If you look at the real current stats, Kendrick Lamar’s GOOD Kid M.A.A.D. City album has gotten better critical reviews than Drake’s Thank Me Later album, Drake’s Take Care album, and Drake’s Nothing Was The Same album. The only great advantages that Drake has over Kendrick Lamar right now is the current fact that Drake is a better singer than Kendrick Lamar, Drake has sold more records than Kendrick Lamar, Drake gets more mainstream radio airplay than Kendrick Lamar, Drake is more popular with the biased mainstream media, biased mainstream music fans, and white people in this country than Kendrick Lamar, and Drake has won more Grammy Awards than Kendrick Lamar. Other than that, Kendrick Lamar is a better lyrical rapper, and a much better battle rapper.

I will admit that Drake has a much bigger fanbase than Kendrick Lamar right now. I am still waiting to see if Drake can expand his subject matter instead of talking about money, fame, women, relationships, having a hard time adjusting to fame and being better than everyone else 99 percent of the time. In order for Drake to stay relevant for the next 10 years or the next 15 years, Drake will have to become more experimential like Kanye West or Outkast, and I don’t know for a fact if Drake will have a Jay-Z type of career or will he have a Ja-Rule type of career. I believe there could be a strong possibility that Kendrick Lamar could last longer than Drake because I believe Kendrick Lamar already has enough confidence in himself to expand his subject matter.

Kendrick is definitely talented. And here’s why:

    1. His flow is technical, interesting, and varied.

No one is playing with words, tonality, sounds, metaphors, alliteration, and internal rhyme like this guy is. He is definitely on point with his format.

    2. His delivery is entertaining to listen to (and watch).

Presentation is everything. And Kendrick delivers in this area. He spits with passion, with alien-inspiration, with creativity that makes whatever he’s saying automatically “genius.” He’s entertaining – and after all, this is the entertainment business.

    3. His lyricism is unmatched on a mainstream level.

Self-explanatory. No one is touching his lyrical prowess. And his only true competition has the hip-hop kryptonite of being “soft.”

Kendrick is also definitely hyped. And here’s why:

    1. His content is redundant and repetitive.

What meaning did you derive from his BET Cypher freestyle other than, “I’m the greatest”? Cole covers more topical material than Kendrick. The usual king/god talk, whips, money, etc. is boring. He doesn’t bring any uniqueness to this area.

    2. He is the “new guy.” Automatic hype.

Everyone is always searching for the next big thing. Although we still appreciate Drake, we’re bored. We want a new toy to play with. The novelty of Kendrick contributes to the “hype” surrounding him.

    3. He has no competition.

If you compare Versace to generic brands, Versace will easily stand out. If you compare Versace to Gucci or Prada, the playing field is more even. Comparing Kendrick to his low-quality contemporaries is silly. Compare him to true quality lyricism, and he will suddenly seem very average.
