Pharrell: Beyoncé Won’t Release Album Until It Feels Right

Beyoncé and Pharrell

Beyoncé has toured the world, performed at the Super Bowl, and even put out a calendar, but she’s yet to give her fans the one thing they want most—a new album. One of her collaborators, Pharrell, provided some insight into why Queen Bey is taking so long to release the project.

In a recent interview with Billboard, The Neptunes producer blamed it on her strive for perfection.

“B’s album is crazy,” he said. “She’s very particular. She’s a Virgo. And she’s not going to put it out until it’s ready and feels like it’s right to her. She’s got a very specific taste. I guess that’s the reason she’s Beyoncé. Her name is recognizable around the globe and that’s huge. When you know what you want, you won’t stop until you get it.”

But he did offer some hopeful words for those who can’t wait any longer. “[Other people are hearing her album] and are like ‘Whoa!’ And she’s like, ‘Yeah, I’m almost done.’ And she’s the queen.”

In addition to Pharrell, Bey has been in the studio with Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, and The-Dream. “We all started in the ’90s, when R&B was the most important genre, and we all kind of want that back: the feeling that music gave us,” she told GQ in January.

When she’s not in the lab, fans can catch her on stage when “The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour” returns to the U.S. on December 2.

well I hope that is the same feeling on her new album. These artist started out as R&B artists and its nothing wrong with doing other genres of music but sometimes it does not hurt to go back to the roots

@Musicnerd, r&b can be so repetitive sounding with some much similarity in lyrics. Unless shes pushing the boundaries with R&B like Frank Ocean and JT did, its not going to work. 4 was a typical basic ass r&b album, and u see where that went. Ppl want innovation, something new and fresh. Esspecially when there spending money in this day in age.

@meme, I’m not a Beyonce Stan, but liked “4″ because it was R&B and Pop ballads. Erykah Badu said something recently, which is that everybody doesn’t have to try to reinvent the wheel to sound fresh. I think you do have a lot of artists who are experimenting to the point that it sounds forced to be different in terms of production. Overall, people want authenticity, whether it’s back to basics or experimenting. Nicki Minaj “experimented” with Roman Reloaded and Kanye “experimented” with Yeezus, and we see what happened with both of those. Meanwhile, Adele stuck to basic pop ballads and look at those record sales. I think solid R&B with depth in lyrics and quality production can still be successful when carried out by somebody of her caliber with the right promotion.

@meme, i have to disagree with you about “4″. The album did not sound like anything that Beyonce had previously released. She had songs with more depth on the album. I don’t know any R&B album that sounded like that. The production and song choice were all something new from Beyonce. What’s interesting is that people complained about Beyonce doing up-beat tempo songs on her albums but when she chose to go a different route they were still unsatisfied. Nevertheless “4″ was successful, just not as commercially successful as her previous albums. I get the sense that Beyonce has matured which is why she is very selective about what she wants to sing about on this next project. I noticed the maturity in “4″. It was a different side of her.

u kno what….i would respect her more if she had just said this. we all knew from the jump that everything was scrapped, only her delusional fans thought differently. If the music original planned for release early this year was crap (which clearly it was from grown woman, i been on etc) then im ok with waiting if it means getting something with more quality.

    L'orel Reply:

@meme, She has in fact said that though. It’s people (producers & collaborators working on the project) who have put other notions in people’s head that it was scrapped completely. She never gave an official release date which might have also lead people to believe the entire project was scrapped. I get the sense that she has been in the recording process all this time and trying to come up with new i ideas and create a great body of work. She released those teaser singles to see how people would respond to decide what direction she should go in. She did not release them to iTunes or any other digital format for purchase. Beyonce seems to be observing and trying to perfect everything. She isnt rushing a release just for critical acclaim like some artists do to try to remain relevant because she knows her name is solidified.

Now this is either one BIG LIE or Beyonce is doing the most…. BISH u recorded B’Day in 2 weeks and that was probably one of your BEST albums….now u gotta go through all this delaying for perfection ? i find this hard to believe

    TRUTH SERUM Reply:

@Adelephant, Actually records take time to craft. If you were in the industry, you would know this… B’DAY took two weeks to record and finish. NOT TO ACTUALLY MAKE FROM SCRATCH. There were tracks already to be done when she first begun work on B’DAY. 4 is her best album and most critically acclaim and one of best female albums of all time (and thats according to rolling stone). She and MJ are almost identical when it comes to their work. They strive for only the best. And this is what makes great music.

like Pharell said, Bey knows what she wants and she’s not going to put out something for the entire globe to hear if she isnt pleased with it and I respect her decision 100%!!! Im a real fan of bey and any real Beyfans/stans should already know about the process Bey takes when preparing for upcoming albums!! That’s what’s wrong with music today, everybody want that “quick hit” so fast instead of taking your time like the great legends use to do back in the 60s,70,80, and even 90s, and make a quality ALBUM WHICH IS WHAT Bey is trying to do.

@CreoleBeyFan, RU kidding? In the past it was exactly opposite-in the 60s ,artists were releasing two albums a year,in the 70s one album every 12 months if that,in the 80s every 12-18 months and it was only in the 90s that longer gaps between albums became regular. And a great deal of classic 60s/70s albums were released in relatively short gaps,as if people were much more inspired back then. But if you mean people like Stevie Wonder or Marvin Gaye (or Michael Jackson later) who worke and worked on something until it became special, you have a point. They really set some new standards.

    [Reply]

  9. Bitches In Paris

Well the thing is Queen Bey doesn’t need to just release albums EVERY YEAR & have music that just sounds so forced & lame . If she wants to wait to make any announcements about her album til it is JUST PERFECT then I don’t mind waiting on perfection/greatness . She knows what she’s doing . Bey is NOT trying to just drop a album & just have one hit & then the album flops .

Bey doesn’t know what flopping is . Quality over quantity . Ladies & gentlemen :)

I’M READY BEY DROP IT WHEN YOU’RE READY ! Although , I miss hearing new music from you .

its like recreating a masterpiece… ex. usher’s confessions. he’s trying to recreat that but turned so forced. i guess recreating something that has been done before is predictable.

new sounds are the once people want. like black eyed peas done on the euro scene and fuse it with pop.

exploring fresh sounds makes people more instrested…
like Lorde – Royals… theres so much artist that havent been heard that has really pushed it and created a great work.

    [Reply]

@G-STAR, this was a great comment. Those were perfect examples. Lorde music can be considered r&b/urban but it sounds so fresh so it worked. That’s what Beyoncé needs. Gone are the days of basic ass r&b music. Beyoncé just really lacks versatility. Like pharrell said she has a very specific taste.

    [Reply]

    WTF Reply:

@Meme, she lacks? LMAO! DIL, BDAY, I AM AND 4 sound nothing like each other first. Second to go from singing a song like Crazy In love, to If I were a Boy to Déjà Vu to Ave Maria to Single Ladies to 1+1 what is she lacking? At the end of the day Beyoncé makes music that her FANS like. You have to realize that at this point of career she is not trying to garner new fans. She doesn’t need them. She wouldn’t be selling out Stadiums without releasing an album if she did. And then y’all keep saying what she needs to sing and who she needs to sound like. She needs to be her. If you want Adele type of music listen to ADELE. If you want poured type of music listen to LOURDE.

    [Reply]

    Ay Reply:

@WTF, Beyoncé isn’t versatile, Deja Vu and Crazy In Love sound very similar, as do If I Were a Boy and Ave Maria, she has one singing style she uses on every song which is why Bow Down sounded so ridiculous.

@Ay, That’s the real reason why she had to scrap all the music she recorded. She’s not original & she STEALs other people’s ideas because she can’t come up with anything new & fresh on her own. Her team is probably working overtime trying to find something they can steal and pass off as an original concept.

Ya’ll forget that even if B’day was made quickly, it was Beys sophomore album.

She’s at a different level now musically, artistically, and iconically.

4 was Beyonce’s way of showing musically that she’s reached a point in her career where she doesn’t have to fit a mold and she did exactly what she wanted on that album.

We’ve seen her venturing into some different sounds (Third Ward Trill anybody on Jay’s album?) and she probably wants to be sure that if she’s going to experiment it’s still within her creative sound and brand.

I hope Grown Woman and Bow Down at least make the deluxe version they are two great jams.

I she ain’t getting “inspired” when Pharrell says she has a “specific taste.” She released I Am…Sasha Fierce, different versions of the album with a bunch of singles out. She admitted that IASF was an album of bunch of singles and that’s why she not doing that again. 4 was a good album but not as good as her first two albums. I think Run the World was a horrible choice for the first single. It was too much. If the music was tone down it would be good. The song didn’t fit the album. If the record label and execs released End of Time as the second or first single it would have improve the albums sales and interest of others.
