Soul Train Awards Roll Into Las Vegas with Tamar Braxton, K. Michelle, T.I., Wale, & Jennifer Hudson

K. Michelle, Raheem DeVaughn, Sevyn Streeter, and Janelle Monáe

There was love, peace, and soul when the 2013 Soul Train Awards rolled into Las Vegas on Friday night. Hosted by Anthony Anderson, this year’s show paid homage to the soul soundtrack of the ’90s, with performances from today’s brightest stars and the legends before them.

Jennifer Hudson opened the show with a medley of hits, accompanied by Evelyn “Champagne” King, Chaka Khan, and T.I., who joined her for her new single “I Can’t Describe (The Way I Feel).”

Tamar Braxton picked up awards in categories including Best R&B/Soul Female Artist and the Ashford and Simpson Songwriter’s Award (via The Boombox). A teary-eyed Tamar accepted one of her awards from Chaka Khan and later performed her single “All the Way Home.”

K. Michelle took home Best New Artist and delivered a white-hot performance, while Wale teamed up with Mint Condition’s Stokley Williams for a mash-up of Marvin Gaye’s “Inner City Blues” and “LoveHate Thing.”

Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Keith Sweat dueted with Faith Evans on his 1988 hit “Make It Last Forever.”

Dionne Warwick was honored with the Legend Award and received a star-studded salute from Ron Isley, Ruben Studdard, Chrisette Michelle, and Gladys Knight. They capped off the tribute with a performance of Warwick’s “That’s What Friends Are For.”

Slick Rick, Warren G, Dougie E. Fresh, and Big Daddy Kane thrilled with an old school hip-hop medley, while the “Blue-Eyed Soul” set starred Jon B., Bobby Caldwell, Dave Koz, and Vanilla Ice, who rapped “Ice Ice Baby.”

Other big winners included Janelle Monáe (Video of the Year for “Q.U.E.E.N.”), Robin Thicke (Song of the Year for “Blurred Lines”), and Ashanti (Best Independent R&B/Soul Performance for “Never Should Have”).

The 2013 Soul Train Awards will air on Centric and BET on Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. EST.

Isn’t Lifetime Achievement Award’ and Legend Award’ sort of the same thing? What exactly did TI win for this year? And I would have gave that Female R&B to someone like Alicia Keys, Ciara, Kelly Rowland, or Fantasia, not Tamar Braxton. Only on BET I see.

@mailee, that’s a good one…..not saying she can’t sing, but I think it should have gone to someone more well accomplished. But it’s BEt though, so they will treat her like royalty when the other awarf shows won’t

@mailee, No Tamar won because Bet loves Tamar, and Alicia’s singles this year would have qualified her because Girl On Fire didn’t make 2012′s deadline.. Tamar wasn’t nominated for an Ama like Ciara and Alicia, which is why I say because this is a Bet affiliated show, that is why..

@mailee, thats a good one. She can sing, I give her that, but she is not as talented that Alicia

@bx, Tamar Braxton can Not sing – she is all hyped over with music tracked up loud by Vincent and Babyface. They bought those awards for her and took them from true musicians and vocalists. Chrisette Michele, Candice Glover, Janae Monae, Ashanti, even K. Michelle. Let her sing acappella – hahaa, yeah, right – oh, my throat hurts, boo hooo. cause you downlo whisper or scream. you have no tone of your own!! but you can run that mouth. now you have stolen awards to put on your mantel piece. put your clothes on, you ain’t miley cyrus, she’s 21, and can sing. You can hear her voice. dag all these gimmicks to make you relevant … uhh K Michelle, drop half that ass, it’s overkill,

@Bx, Alicia Keys can play the hell out a piano but she can not sing boo and neither can Ciara she’s a great dancer though. Now Tamar want to do have on honey? I know her performance was great! Other than that. Everyone looked GREAT!!

@Jackie Rayne, It’s not a real matter of who has the best voice anymore in this industry, radio will tell you that. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

R&B is so pathetic. No heavy hitters. A bunch of old singers, and new nobodies.

I need Interscope to get it together and drop Candice Glover’s album. Her voice is too dope. I’m ready to see her perform again. I’m still slayed by her run on A.I.

Who won Best Hip Hop Song of the year? “Power Trip” deserves it IMO.

Sevyn and Lyn a Richgirl reunion!

  13. I digress

Alicia Keyes has won this category several times in the past but Girl on Fire could not touch Love and War….As someone said…Alicia can play piano but her singing is just average…Both Tamar and K.Michelle can sing and play piano…Ya’ll old favorites are just not bringing it anymore…so they need to move over.

  14. I digress

Sevyn can also play piano but her vocals are not that strong…she is a good song writer though. Hands down soul train awards got this one right….Tamar’s entire album is good…it’s a return to R&B with good lyrics about relationships. She worked her ass off to put out a good grown & sexy product. If you’re craving wack lyrics with a good beat and subpar singing…then Tamar, K.Michelle, Sevyn are not the artists for you.
