New Music: Mariah Carey – ‘The Art of Letting Go’

The Art of Letting Go

The wait is over. After overcoming a painful injury, Mariah Carey soars once again with her new single “The Art of Letting Go,” which also serves as the title track to her upcoming album. The stirring ballad, produced by Rodney Jerkins, debuted on Monday to her 14 million Facebook fans.

“This is such a personal record to me,” said the pop diva. “I wrote the lyrics so that anyone and everyone could relate to them and hopefully release anything that they need to let go of that’s holding them back or bringing them down. Thank you for sharing this experience with me!”

“The Art of Letting Go” serves as the follow-up to the Miguel-assisted hit “#Beautiful,” which peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Mariah has been in the studio with Nas, Wale, Hit-Boy, Mike WiLL Made-It, and her manager Jermaine Dupri working on her first album since 2009’s Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel.

To coincide with the release, she is also hosting a Q&A with her fans on her Facebook page.

@Shaytan, I completely agree. These are such great lyrics, but everything else is off; the way she is singing it, the beat, the creation as a whole. She’s working with the best producers in the industry, so I don’t get it. FLOPPPPPP!

@kate, ooh that’s a bit tough! Brandy is amazing, her tone is so on point, even right now. I would reluctantly have to admit Brandy is better right now, but in the past, there have been times, Mariah has beaten Brandy in terms of range and tone too. They are my two favorite vocalists:)

    [Reply]

    Zelly Reply:

@kate, They’re both amazing, but Mariah’s vocals fell off quite a bit since 2005 when she came back at the top of her game and Brandy IS the Vocal Bible for a reason and will remain so

Excellent vocals, Brandy is great, but MC is out of her league, she has more versatility, more range, and does an array os runs and all of the technical stuff. Brndy is great but she’s a in the pocket singer..

    [Reply]

    Halo Reply:

@theman, not a big Brandy fans but what runs does Mariah do? She’s attempting to do runs in this boring track but fails miserably. Brandy is the queen of riffing, running and harmonies…and this is coming from a Beyonce stan!!! Mariah had good runs in the early 90s (Beyonce wanted to become a singer after hearing Mariah’s runs on VOL). As of right now, I prefer Brandy’s vocals to MC’s…especially in a live setting!!! Sorry, not sorry.

It’s fine, but really pales in comparison to “#Beautiful.” Her ballads don’t feel genuine to me anymore. “We Belong Together” was legit, but that template can only be followed so many times. Not to say this sounds like that, but it definitely sounds like her trying to marry that with her 90′s sound instead of just doing something entirely new that kind of blows everyone’s mind, even the haters — like “#Beautiful.” Whoever is managing her needs to realize that after The Emancipation of Mimi both she and the public seem to be more genuinely interested in her midtempos and uptempos. It’s hard to blame her for lack of inspiration given the number of ballads she has recorded, so maybe it’s time to just let go of the beat ballads, traditional pop ballads, and those that are somewhere in the middle, like this. Mariah still shines in all of her vivacious, effervescent glory on recent singles like “Touch My Body,” “Loving You Long Time,” and “Beautiful.”

Honestly, I’m a huge Mariah fan. I love the song, if we’re talking about it being on the album. Now as a single, this was a dumb move. I know for a fact it won’t impact the radio whatsoever, or help her push album sales because it won’t reach out to any new audience besides her lambily… I was hoping for a “We Belong Together” moment… or at least something equivalent to the success of “Obsessed”… merp. Still a fan, just disappointed.

So glad Mariah is making classic, mature music, if you’re looking for a “banger”, go elsewhere. Just like Whitney, Mariah doesn’t need to make “bangers” anymore, thank GOD for her talent.

What the haters need to understand, is that all of these other artists that you’re comparing Mariah to were left in the dust back in the 90s. Mariah has broken her records, she’s achieved her number 1s and is now making music for herself and her fans rather than trying to score another number one. This song speaks volumes compared to a song about ass, sex and profanity. The haters should respect the fact that she acknowledges the fact that they hate, and just continues to make music for her loyal lambily.

How can any of you compare Mariah Carey to Brandy and say brandy would out sing her now that’s a insult to Mariah who would sing rings around brandy believe people think Mariah lost her voice no actually her voice got more raw deeper and she cans till hit those dog whistle notes. brandy is good to go up against riaana, beyonce, monica, Keisha coles but not Mariah. don’t be fooled by Mariah when that voice is rest believe me that girl will blow those lil girls out the water.Mariah lypp some of her performances but I remember back in her early days in which a lot of you all were to young that is why yall compare her to brandy. People always thought that Mariah lypp her performances but it was all her voice because she sings her songs the same way she sound on her albums. go to youtube and look at her old performances you will think she was lypping the performance

Mariah still have it she is finally returning to her roots now people are complaining about how she needs to go back singing ballads people make up your mind the album is going to blow everyone out the water and that will put her back up to the top it has been over four years since she release an studio album she is long over due for a album

Flop! Let me just say that I have loved Mariah Carey for years and have been hoping for a comeback for her ever since she released E=MC2 which was weak followed by Memoirs which was weaker and now this ridiculous obsession with releasing singles only as opposed to just making an album and putting it out. I think this song was obviously written as rebuttal to Tommy Mottola’s book, Hitmaker, in which he does discuss his relationship with Mariah Carey. All I have to say is this….. Mariah we get it! Tommy Mottola was your boss and husband and was the dominant figure in the relationship. since your divorce in 1997 you have taken stabs at your ex here and there throughout your work. Do you ever consider while you are crying the blues about how he held you back that he was actually instrumental in your career? The awards you and your “lambs” tirelessly drone on and on about would not even exist without Tommy. You haven’t had an RIAA Diamond certified album since your divorce and your new “liberated” style. While you were married to Tommy you had not one but two diamond albums. So give it a rest already. The “emancipated” and “I don’t live under your dominion” routine is not only getting old but it’s insulting to people that actually do escape from truly bad relationships. Maybe you should make amends with your old team and make some actual hit music instead of over-hyping these snooze fest singles and drop the whole “diva” routine. Try acting like a bad ass instead of a wimpy little princess, get some good hooks and just lay down a track that we can all get into instead of this ridiculous string of songs that sound like the background music for perfume commercials at best.

    B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!
Not all released songs need to be chart topping sing along songs. Think about the message of the song and WHY she chose to release it. This song means the world to her because she knows how hard it is to let go of the negativity in one’s life, and wants to show her fans that yes it isn’t easy, but it’s all worth it in the end. This lyrical content can’t be touched or duplicated. Not by Rihanna, Katy Perry, Mary J. Blige, Nicki Minaj, Alicia Keys, NO ONE. All great artists, but no one can touch the lyrical genius and ultimately legendary writing of Mariah Carey.

If the music ain’t pop, the kids don’t like it!
They will have to deal. Every song that an artist releases doesn’t have to be a chart topper, instead just a great song like this one. Anything with meaning is considered boring and compared to the likes of PopRihanna, yes PopRihanna is her name, no shade. Its so much more to music than how rich someone gets. I don’t get why fans care so little about the actually music, instead billboard and how much money an artist makes.

Im a big fan of MC,I tried to listen to this single many times thinking that it will change my mind, but it didnt help, this single is just boring and frustrating. Pls stop doing runs that sounds like somewhere 2:52 of the song, it sounds cheap and monotonic. In addition, Mariah seems to look uninspired nowadays, no energy, her eyes looks silly and tired, maybe because her children? On the other hand,we must also understand Mariah, she`s not the same, she`s already a mother of two, we cant bring back the `eomimi vibe` as well as her previous voice. Furthermore, i think making a Hit song not only requires great voice or lyrics, but also a little luck with the song melody, I mean this single might become a hit if it sounds like wbt? right? Anyways, just a piece of advice for MC, dont force yourself to do a mature/old kyna vibe of song just because u are already a mother, i mean look at Madonna, you can do eomimi vibe again, age doesnt matter, just try to be fit like a vs model, do some voice exercise, and pls avoid doing b*, u know what i mean with ur husband cuz that can totally ruin ur throat… thats it….
