Justin Timberlake, Rihanna Among Winners at 2013 American Music Awards

Justin Timberlake and Rihanna

Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake earned the top honors at the 2013 American Music Awards on Sunday.

The “Mirrors” singer took home three awards at Sunday’s show at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, while Swift lead the pack with four awards including Artist of the Year.

Timberlake, who performed “Drink You Away” during the telecast, won in the categories of Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist, Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist, and Favorite Soul/R&B Album.

Rihanna scored two awards including Favorite Female Soul/R&B Artist and the first-ever Icon Award, which was presented to her by Jay Z and her mother Monica Fenty.

“Right now, I can’t believe that at 25 years old, I’m holding an Icon Award,” said Rihanna, who performed “Diamonds.” “That is weird to even say out loud.”

Two-time winners Macklemore & Ryan Lewis beat out Jay Z and Kendrick Lamar in the Rap/Hip-Hop categories.

Winners were determined by online voting. See a full list below.

  1. You Mad 'Cause I Don't D--k-Ride Ya Fave?

Macklemore is a little overrated, and he won over Kendrick? Album wise, GKMC was hip-hop, the story being told throughout the whole piece was amazing and it was different than the usual rapper putting out albums full of uninspired garbage. Some can call K-Dot overrated as an MC, but you cannot deny the solid album he put out, I’m disappointed, hope the Grammys aren’t the same

@ArianaGrande, when you can find an artist that is writing, producing, singing, dancing, AND playing several instruments like justin timberlake then you may comment on justin timberlake until then just be quiet. fact is bruno is great, he writes & plays an instrument but that’s it. these other pop artists aren’t doing any of that. not to mention, the 20/20 experience parts 1 & 2 were both solid stand alone albums w/ good music that we haven’t had in the past couple of years. #bitchesbetryingit

@karamelkisses, there are several musicians in the street that are panhandling and do what JT do so hell yeah there are people like him. Now, is he overrated? I think so. Is he a great musician? Undisputed.

@You Mad ‘Cause I Don’t D–k-Ride Ya Fave?, Mackelmore won because that album was worked on since 2007, if I’m not mistaken. Mac & Ry put a lot of effort into that album.. WAY before Kendrick was in the spotlight.

It goes to show, hard work pays off

@Sushi, You do realise Kendrick has two albums right that are better than Macklemore’s discography?

Dont worry the grammys wont be the same, Drake’s NWTS will win best Album and Best Hip-Hop/Rap Album. Not Kendrick

@You Mad ‘Cause I Don’t D–k-Ride Ya Fave?, It is even crazier that a caribbean woman who sings pop wins an R&B award. It doesn’t get any crazier than that.

Ok, I got nothing against the winners. Congrats to all of them, but what happened to all the black artists? very few were nominated. dang, they need to start adding more than three nominees for a category. I guess blue eyed soul is truly taking over. people talk trash about the BET awards, but when I look at these other award shows, I notice that there are many artists, both young and old, who would never get recognition if BET did not exist.

@bapqtpie2004, EVERYTHING was black at the AMAs except the winners, sweetheart. Welcome to America!

I honestly think Kendrick Lamar should of won the hip-hop categories GKMC is an great CD. The way he wrote & structure the songs into a story is brilliant. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis is okay but their type of music is for the Pop genre even through they’re rappers. The AMA’s only give awards the awards to the MOST POPULAR person in that category. Example, Favorite Female Artist: Soul/R&B that award should’ve went to Alicia Keys, she had good R&B songs that came out this year. This doesn’t include being #1 or an platinum selling record ,it’s good quality R&B music but it went to Rihanna (I’m not hating) because she’s the most popular. It’s okay through, I’ve personally think the Grammy’s is the only music award show that nominate people and give awards to artists to truly deserves the recognition.

Justin Timberlake is overrated he is not that good of a artist his music sucked this year.really he won over miguel for favorite male artist/soul r&b, then won over rihanna’s unapologetic album her album clearly made more noise then his.hes so overrated..and Taylor swift artist of the year booo.

    [Reply]

    karamelkisses Reply:

@just4u, unapologetic made more noise than the 20/20 experience? i’m sorry but didn’t unapologetic only open w/ a little over 200,000 week one? 20/20 opened w/ 968,000 not mention to date it’s sold 3.72 million and has only been out for a little over 8 months. child bye, justin is writing AND producing for rihanna, justin is playing several instruments and his music sucks to those w/ that microwave syndrome. both parts of the 20/20 are fly as f*ck so you can stay mad AND pressed.

1st of all.. one cannot go up against 1 Direction, and not expect to lose. Do you not know how huge the Directioners are? And how obsessed?!? Those are not fans. Those are an army!

  6. LEX

its the AMAs what you expect they let one direction beat justin timberlake so im cool with it but this better not happen at the grammys

    [Reply]

    karamelkisses Reply:

@LEX, lmao! you already know the grammy’s will not be entertaining these children. i highly doubt they’ll be nominated let alone win.

    Andy Reply:

@karamelkisses, don’t put the Grammy’s so high. They are far from being objective.

    [Reply]

    karamelkisses Reply:

@Andy, is there a reason why you’re stalking me? the grammys have a committee and then a sub-committee that votes on awards given. they are not the bet, mtv, ama or billboard awards. there are legit people w/ povs that span beyond “what’s hot” when deciding who should be awarded.

obvious win for Macklemore but congrats to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. the only thing hip-hop on Macklemore’s album was the verses from Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul
