TIME, Entertainment Weekly, & Rolling Stone Name Best Music of 2013

Yeezus

Kanye West declared his godliness, Lorde ruled the charts, and Miley Cyrus twerked her way into living rooms in 2013. As the year comes to a close, the critics once again reveal their choices for the best in pop music. TIME, Entertainment Weekly, and Rolling Stone comb through their playlists and pick the top albums and singles of the year.

Kanye West’s Yeezus may not have been nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammys, but it was ranked No. 1 by TIME and EW. “Has there ever been another great album this bitter, this entitled, this abrasively unsatisfied—or this self-aware about it?” asked TIME‘s Douglas Wolk.

On the singles front, Daft Punk and Pharrell’s “Get Lucky” topped all three singles lists, while Big Sean’s “Control” scored TIME‘s No. 3 spot thanks to Kendrick Lamar’s explosive verse.

People like this are the same types responsible for Grammy nominations. Consequently, that’s why J. Cole, Janelle Monae and so many others were snubbed.

    JD Reply:

@Sebastian, Janelle made TIME. I always think it’s great when I agree with them & true talent is recognised but at the end of the day things like these will always be a minority opinion imposed upon the masses.

    Niko Reply:

@Sebastian, Not True. If that were the case, Kanye would have had more Grammy nominations. Yeezus is at the top of every list here.

boy the critics really trashing JT this year. First the grammys now this

    [Reply]

    Chris Brown Reply:

@meme, his album wasn’t even special. he sold so much because he was like 6 years away from the music scene. people sold it also because of timbaland

    JoJo Reply:

@Chris Brown, lol Nelly furtado took 5 years off and her album didn’t even go silver

    Chris Brown Reply:

@meme, Not Only JT but Rihanna as well!

    [Reply]

    karamelkisses Reply:

@meme, and yet JT is laughing all the way to the bank. this man is both the best selling and highest grossing artist of 2013. TWO number one albums (The 20/20 Experience parts 1 & 2), TWO sold out tours (Legends of the Summer & The 20/20 Experience World Tour) so I’m sure he isn’t concerned w/ making a list by Time, Rolling Stone or Entertainment Weekly. While they behind desks criticizing, he’s out making it happen. #legendaryandbossstatus

  9. Kyle

Oh great…more ammunition to boost Kanye’s already larger-than-life- ego.

    [Reply]

    JHP Reply:

@Kyle, Yeah I agree, as a huge Kanye fan, I supported Ye and bought Yeezus, but I’ll admit to being disappointed by it. The critics may think it’s a masterpiece, but having loved every album Ye’s put out before, even 808s. I hated it to no end on the first listen, but it did grow on me a little overtime. But even then, it’s still his weakest project to date, still disappointing, and still a subpar effort overall compared to his last album. This is the first time Ye sold less than 400k the first week. He did like 327k and hasn’t even sold 600k quite yet, whereas all his other albums were platinum in a month and a half or less. And the fans were so divided on it, I’ve never heard so many people call a Kanye album garbage in my life. It’s hard being a Ye fan right now, I really hope he gets his ish together.

    [Reply]

    eoiny Reply:

@JHP, He sold pretty well tbh with almost no marketing or singles. not even an album cover lol

YEEZUS IS ART, THESE PEOPLE ARE PROFESSIONAL ART CRITICS. THEY KNOW.

YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO LIKE ART, IT’S SUPPOSED TO MAKE YOU FEEL.

    [Reply]

    Alan Reply:

@CurtisDonDeano, Yeezus is filled with foul language, mysogyny, racism, and lechery. There is no rhythm to his raps and the musical composition is uninspired. It’s the worst album of the year which is exactly why the critics have declared it the best. “Professional” critics are not interested in art. They only care about attracting attention so they can raise their advertising rates. They also receive kickbacks from the record companies.

The Raps on Yeezus are awful. The Music is awful. How can this Album be the best Album of 2013? And I like the most Kanye Albums. Justin’s and Eminem’s Albums are so much better and are not even in the Top 10? Why? Because they were successful?

    The Lists are a joke!

    C’mon man.

And NOT to put Robin Thicke’s as one of the best songs of 2013. When it was literally one of the biggest singles. GTFOH

I’m more of a gamer than a person who follows music, but for some reason this year I keep stumbling across top album lists and Yeezus is always somewhere near the top.
I don’t put too much value in top music lists because I’m well aware that everyone has their own taste, and because I’m not an avid music follower I don’t claim to be attuned to what most people view as “good music”.
Now that I’ve gotten my introduction out of the way, YEEZUS SUCKED ASS! I’ve listened to it at least 3 times and I couldn’t bear to sit through it again. The lyrics are weak and empty, the beats are unique, but forgettable. Kanye’s worst album to date.
