New Music: Drake – ‘Trophies’

Trophies

Break out the champagne. After much anticipation, Drake debuts the full version of his celebratory anthem “Trophies,” which he previewed in the Nothing Was the Same trailer.

Over a horn-heavy instrumental, produced by Hit-Boy and co-produced by Hagler and Noah “40″ Shebib, the Canadian MC reflects on his self-made success, his parents’ divorce, and his responsibilities.

“I’m just tryna stay alive and take care of my people/ And they don’t have no award for that/ Trophies,” declares Drizzy, who dropped his freestyle to Soulja Boy’s “We Made It” last week.

Strike up the triumphant tune below.

He is on his grind. No matter if you like it or not, he is comfortable in the lane he’s created for himself. I respect the hustle.

Nothing new. Same formula he’s been using. Dope beat, below average basic verses and a good hook. He gets a pass for pretty much doing the same thing over and over again.

He is good but overrated by most.

@K0kakw0rld, Pretty much doing the same thing over and over again? you mean the style he crafted, and made his signature and ppl fell in love with it? Oh….when would your fav rapper?

@meme, The whole singing and rapping wasn’t crafted by drake, you probably never heard of LL Cool J huh that’s the first rapper that broke the scene with that style. You can youtube him a song called Doin it and more songs!! Not hating on Drake but as a skilled rapper he’s average compared to someone like Eminem, Nas, Jay, Kendrick and even J. Cole.

I’m with ya Tony my two favorites are EM and Nas and Drake ain’t nowhere near them he has the numbers over Nas but not EM not even close. Kendrick is the only one from this generation that has the skill and soon the numbers that can reach a legendary MC status. But these new fans of Hip Hop don’t understand what lyricism is and that’s what’s sad and will eventually destroy the culture. This song is a perfect example of that!!

@2gunz78 agreed on all counts. My second favorite rapper is nas as well. What ppl seem to forget is that em and nas emote five times better than drake ever will in addition to being superior lyricists. Nas’s song dance (about losing his mother), and ems songs rock bottom and mockingbird, have made me feel more emotion than drake ever has, guess I don’t fuck and lose enough “bitches” to relate to his music
