Beyoncé and Jay Z Top Billboard’s Power 100 List

Billboard Power 100

All hail Beyoncé and Jay Z. The superstar couple reigns atop Billboard’s Power 100, an annual list of the most influential people in the music business.

They are the first celebrities to ever claim the No. 1 spot on the magazine’s list of industry titans.

Beyoncé was recognized for her self-titled album, which took the industry by storm when it unexpectedly arrived in December. It has gone on to sell more than 1.5 million copies in the U.S.

“She took a high risk and was highly rewarded for it,” said Guy Oseary, who manages Madonna and U2. “I love what she did. Thank you, Beyoncé—it brings much-needed excitement and buzz to our industry.”

Jay Z also rewrote the rules with the release of his album Magna Carta…Holy Grail. Samsung purchased 1 million copies before it even went on sale to the public and gave it away for free to their users.

“Artists have always had the power but courage is in short supply. It’s just that the hip-hop generation believes in the possibilities,” said Jay Z’s longtime associate Lyor Cohen. “Jay and Beyoncé don’t listen to the noise—they make the noise.”

The game-changing duo joins a prestigious list that also includes Bryan “Birdman” Williams and Ronald “Slim” Williams, L.A. Reid, Ryan Seacrest, and Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun.

The Power 100 issue of Billboard hits newsstands today. See the full list here.

@nunofyobusiness, too predictable yet she drops an album in an unprecedented way. he inks a major deal w/ a major cellphone carrier, the first ever w/ lady gaga later in the year following suite (or trying to). #byefelicia … people are getting bored yet she sold 600k+ in 4 days and he sold over 500k in a week. she had one of the highest grossing tours of 2013 as did he the first w/ justin timberlake & the second being his solo tour. again I say #byefelicia. but then again, you are a rihanna fan & whose hype is more diluted than this non-singing, non-dancing skank?

The only thing Jay-Z and Beyonce care is Money and a Life in luxury. They would tell everything what the Fans wanna hear only to sell more. Million of Kids in the World have nothing to eat and they both have nothing better to do than to show us how rich they are and in which luxury they live.

But the most stupid is that other People celebrate them because they top any stupid lists. Jesus how sick is this World.

There were no risks involved here! Beyonce knew what she was doing and so did her management! This is a business, which means that there’s practically no margin for error when your at the level she’s at because the loss > gain or vice-versa. Therefore her and her management assessed the anticipation for her return after a long break and saw that they could use this opportunity “game changer” with an artist with such prestige, which equals $$! This formula was evaluated before being executed! This was just great marketing! Stop making it more than it seems!

    [Reply]

    Major Sushi Reply:

@The Shady Truth, actually it was a risk. with no singles out, before the album, for promotion, to get a glimpse of what the album would sound like. So if we wanted to hear “The Great Beyoncé” we had to purchase her $15 album. I have not regretted.
