Beyoncé and Jay Z Open Grammys with ‘Drunk in Love’

Beyoncé and Jay Z

Beyoncé and Jay Z put the rumors to rest and opened the 56th Annual Grammy Awards at L.A.’s Staples Center on Sunday. Seated in a chair, a wet Bey performed “Drunk in Love” before being joined by her husband Jay Z, who helped her recreate a scene out of the sexy music video.

The superstar couple showed off their chemistry and Bey echoed her “Surfboard” catchphrase, while Taylor Swift sang along from her seat.

Watch the Carters kick things off with their sizzling set.

They killed it! I think Bey was a little nervous in the beginning because she couldn’t hear herself, hence why she ripped out the ear piece, but overall they still ate that ish up.

@T, I have no problem calling a spade a spade no matter who I’m speaking about or to. I always love seeing J and B together and she will forever be my bitch. With that being said, that performance was both lackluster and underwhelming. Anytime any artist hits the Grammy stage, it’s the opportunity to create a moment and she failed to do so. She could have recreated a pageant scene and sung “pretty hurts”, sat on a stool under a spotlight and showcased her vocals w/ “rocket” or even had a crazy choreographed set w/ “grown woman” but “drunk in love” is NOT a live performance song. People were commenting that she looked down, off or sad all show long and I think it was because she was disappointed in her set. She knows she capable of more and she knows we know she’s capable of more. Will I throw her away over one ok performance? No, because everyone has a one off. MJ, Whitney, Mariah, Madonna … some of the greatest have all had one offs and this was B’s.
P.S. To all the Rihanna fans/stans rejoicing in B’s ok performance … sit your asses down! Even B’s ok performance bested Ri’s best performance.

@karamelkisses, Preach! I wanted her to perform flawless so badly. She would have KO’d the awards show before it even began. So many of her songs from the album had the potential for a seriously bomb live performance, but while Drunk is great for the radio, just as you stated, it is not very strong when sung live and as a complete set in and of itself. But Bey still shut it down. She was the name in everyone’s mouth and this isn’t even her album’s year.

    [Reply]

    karamelkisses Reply:

@Mandela Barb, agreed! she could have done a mesh of pretty hurts into the second half of flawless w/ the reading. those of 2 powerful songs for girls and women. she’ll have to find her stride when putting together performances for this album because she doesn’t have the uptempo songs like deja vu or single ladies and that isn’t a bad thing. this was just the first award show of the season, she is still on everybody’s guest list to perform (ama’s, bet, vma’s). next time out, she’ll shut it down because like i said before her track record speaks for itself.

I can’t even front, that performance was boring as shit. I was waiting for her to kick that chair aside and so some crazy choreography but she was pretty dull. Jay Z didn’t even help spice it up. The song is too rach and she looked like she was putting on a show for her man. This isn’t a song that should be performed at a show like the Grammys.

The consensus was that this was an absolutely horrid performance but I don’t expect anyone whose obssessed with the likes of this woman to tell the truth about what they witnessed. Stan’s who are programmed to say more than 2-3 sentences (yassss THE KANG!! She slayed!! and OMG fav snatched my edges), people who are unbiased and just anyone with plain fuqkin taste agree that this was an AWFUL performance. Bey knew it, that’s why she looked so sad and dead in the eyes in the pictures even when she’s smiling the brightest. Undoubtedly she can so better but she needs to save a page from Pinks blueprint as far as evolving as an artist avd as a performer. NOTE I SAID EVOLUTION!

I am a RIDE OR DIE Beyoncé fan but this performance was no better than a Rihanna performance but with much better and actual singing ;-) . Some songs are not to be performed unless there are some things added, dance break or something different. She should’ve done “XO” or “Blow” or gone the ballad route. Very disappointed, hell Pink’s performance was better.

    P.S

    King Fierce Reply:

@BEDSTUYFLY, I will give credit where credit is due, the day Rihanna floors a live performance you will hear nothing but congrats from me. My issue with Rihanna is that she is simply waaaaay more credit and praise than she deserves. She can’t sing, has not artist soul, and damn sure isn’t a performer. You Rihanna fans act like she is the hottest thing since sliced bread, how else can you explain seeing her sing off key live and then saying she slayed and call her Slayanna? Rihanna sounds pretty good on the radio but put a mic in front of her and it’s goaty oodles galore and you Rihanna fans act like she is hitting old school Mariah notes…GTFOH! The reason I praise Beyonce is because she actually slays, her work speaks for her, she doesn’t need hype or crazy fans to say she’s slaying. The facts, numbers,a nod her actions show what she does. The only thing Rihanna has are her number ones, which is a great thing but not the ONLY thing, and her constant hairstyle changes. She’s a Barbie and a SingleSlut with not a shred of dignity. Beyoncé has everything else, number one albums, Grammys, awards, the list goes on. I like Rihanna her music is good but things went left for me when you desperate and ignant Rihanna fans had the audacity to put on the same level and above of Beyoncé. That’s like saying Justin Timberlake is up there with Michael Jackson, false, false, false. You prove my point by your last statement, how you need Beyoncé to mess up in order to have a point well we over here at the BeyHive need only state facts and press play to prove our point. Good night

At what point does a rich and famous person decide that having an opening sex scene, enticing every one who watches the Grammys to look at your thong, to look at your crotch, to see your exposed bum cheeks, to watch your panties get wet, to see your genitalia, tight against your black body thong, and to invite sexual thoughts regarding your vagina and rectum just not what everyone who tunes in needs to see and feel? Yes, you invited sexual thoughts, yes you showed us your mons pubis, tight against the thong, yes you twerked the chair with your labia lips and yes you made everyone hot and bothered. Is this neccessary to open a musical awards show? Could she have been put into the middle of the awards? Is it all about her sexual parts in our faces? I know some of you loved it, but I think it should be about music, and not some one’s wife’s genitalia. Is this what she wanted the President and his wife to look at, because we all were anticipating the Grammy’s with great excitement and there it was, Mrs. Carter’s open legs inviting us to see her baby maker. Was this neccessary? Porno Grammys now having sex with your mind. Ah, yes, sex sells and she was selling it. Her daughter will be proud of her mothers open legs and exposed butt, showing us what her father gets into. We saw it, but what was the point? To adore it, to look at it, to get excited over it? SCORE! Not neccessary, to get that much sexual attention, seriously. Can we get back to the music and not the genitalia any time soon? LOL

This Performance Was Horrible!!!!!!….Beyonce Lip Synced That Performance. She’s Falling Off. It’s Time For Her To Hang It Up. If AALIYAH Was Still Here Music Would’ve Went In A Different Direction. Beyonce New Album Is CUTE!…But It’s Not A Classic At All. You Fans Except Anything From These Artist Now Days And It’s Sad. WAKE THE HELL UP PEOPLE!!!…THESE CELEBS ARE NOT GOD!!!..STOP DEFENDING SOMEONE WHO WILL NEVER KNOW YOUR NAME. I EXPECTED MORE FROM HER BUT THIS PERFORMANCE HAS PROVEN SHE’S COMING TO AN END.

P.S.SHE ALMOST TRIP OVER THE CHAIR WHEN SHE GOT UP WHEN JAY-Z CAME OUT 2:21
