Missy Elliott Addresses Absence From Music

Missy Elliott

It’s been nine years since Missy Elliott released her last album, and you’ll have to keep waiting. The hip-hop icon explains why she’s taking her time to release new music.

In a video chat with Yahoo!’s “The Yo Show,” Missy discussed her lengthy hiatus from the music industry.

“When I create something, it’s gotta be special and it can’t just be to throw something out there because I feel like I’m Missy,” said the 42-year-old rapper. “I gotta feel like what I’m giving the fans is 100 percent and that it’s game-changing. I don’t just throw out microwave records.”

In September 2012, Missy dropped the Timbaland-produced singles “9th Inning” and “Triple Threat,” but her seventh album Block Party has yet to see a release.

But writer’s block is not to blame. “Just being inspired by things is what I’m grabbing for because music is different now,” she explained. “Not to say that it’s bad, it’s just different now, so I’m just trying to make sure that what I give is 100 percent because I know that expectations is high from my fans and it’s high of myself.”

She did, however, reassure fans that she is planning a comeback. “It’s coming. I just ain’t telling nobody when.”

In the meantime, she has collaborated with her longtime friend Faith Evans on her upcoming album Incomparable.

@nino, Well this was out of the blue. Because she’s been out of the game for so long, I don’t want to hear Missy talk about, I just want to see her do it. She can only set herself up for failure by saying that she only wants to release material that’s game-changing only to have it be mediocre. This is far from hate.

I am so excited! But when Missy says “not just to throw something out there” I feel like she did that with “9th Inning” and “Triple Threat”…and I think she knows that.

If it take you NINE years to be inspired, hang it up.
    I’m serious.

@Roman, I love missy but I was thinking the Exact same thing. Really?? It takes a decade for you to be inspired?? That makes your fans lose confidence in your ability as a creative entity.

@Deejay, I am gonna name one artist: “Sade”. If your music is timeless people will wait on you because they know what you will give will be great. I am constantly amaze at how people of the this time are always ready to throw away legends. Without out alot of the legends and icons alot of today’s artist would not have anything to pull from.

@Rasan8250, did you hear Sade’s last album??? It was a joke!! A soldier that I never want to hear again!! When you put out one album every decade and criticize the nation that made you famous… Don’t go there.. I’m a (was a) fan of Sade and am (currently was) a huge fan of missy.. Have supported both live and plan to continue but we only live for so long and I can only truly appreciate the hip hop industry before my bones become to old.. Ten years is a joke…. If you vanish and plan a comeback.. Don’t talk…. SHOW UP!!!!

@Deejay, No Missy actually has her old fans that been riding it out with her since the beginng waiting for her to drop some good quality music. Missy fans respect the fact that she was dealing with graves diease and wanted her to get healthy and take care of herself. They listen to all her old music and r satisfied bcuz it still bumps in the club and they go wild just like its something new. She’s been behind the scenes makin hits for trina, monica, fantasia, demi lovato,j cole, katy perry, her own artist sharaya and a lot of other collabs thru out those years. Unlike other artist she’s on twitter constantly talkin to her fans/stans having conversations not only sayin hey, bye,or thank you,but actually conversations and words of encouragement. So she’s been working so we patiently wait for her.

    [Reply]

    Andy Reply:

@EveRyder, but her fans will not be waiting forever for her to release music. Most (meaning 99%) of them probably jumped to another artist already. They’ll be checking when she drops the music but if is not good, they won’t be buying.

You obviously have NO talent or artistic instinct whatsoever. Not to mention the fact that she had health issues.. REAL artists don’t just sh!t out art… they create it! Sometimes NOTHING inspires you. Would YOU be inspired by the state of hip hop right now? I am a HUGE Missy fan and 9 years has been a effin eternity… but I understand where she is coming from

Who really is going to care about somebody who takes a damn near 10 year break? I honestly think artist shouldnt take 5+ years breaks because your fans grow up and dont like you anymore. I could see if she hasnt been out in like 3-4 years but 9 years tho???

    [Reply]

    Sean Reply:

@Oh, Don’t like you anymore!? This woman is a human being. Not a machine. I’d rather she maintain her artistic integrity and put out music when it feels right, than release an album to appease fans who can’t handle waiting a minute.

    Oh Reply:

@Sean, Yeah I understand, but a 9 year absence? Missy? Love her to death, but I think he should’ve at least gave us a mixtape to let us know she’s still here, I still support Missy I just hope whatever she does is really worth the 10 year wait

@Oh, I USUALLY RIDE OUT WITH YOU COMMENTS, UNTILL YOU POSTED THIS. YES NINE YEARS IS A WHILE, BUT WHEN YOU HAVE MISSY ELLIOTS MONEY AND PREVIOUS SUCCESS, YOU CAN AFFORD TO KICK BACK AND LIVE A NOEMAL QUIET LIFE FOR SEVERAL YEARS. DURING THAT TIME, THE GENERATIONS CHANGE, AS DID MEDIA, SOCIAL NETWORKING AND THE WAY ARTISTS RELEASE ALBUMS AND MIXTAPES EVERY 2 MONTHS TO REMAIN RELEVANT. SHE’S ONE OF THE FEW ARTISTS TO ALWAYS BE ORIGINAL AND HAVE MAJOR INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS FEOM IT.
LIKE ANY GREAT ARTIST IT WILL TAKE HER TIME TO FIND HER PLACE IN MUSIC, REACH HER FANS AND CREATE A NEW SOUND AND MOVEMENT. THAT SHIT AINT EASY, IF YOU THINK IT IS, THEN YOU TRY IT.

All of y’all need to have MULTIPLE SEATS! They way Female Hip Hop looks now, she is not gonna be bothered on whens he needs to release. Because if anything, the game NEEDS her with all this garbage that needs to be released. Period. Even more as hip hop/rap overall (male and female). Her album was originally supposed to drop in 2008, so let’s not say it’s been 9 years. That’s a lie. 9 years since she hasn’t released an album, but not 9 since she’s worked on music. She’s worked on music for other artist, and her own. The quality and direction of her music probably changed. Since 2008, since 2012 (When I think she released those 2 singles), and now. Plus she IS and was sick with graves disease. She’s a legend/icon, when she drop REAL fans will be there. The game is waiting for her, not the other way around. Never get that twisted. All y’all kids need to stay in school.

    [Reply]

    Andy Reply:

@Dave, the game doesn’t need her. If that’s the case, then why last year the most selling albums were Hip hop and R&B? She is an autotune mess right now. Her latest songs were all bad. She won’t succeed. Period.

    [Reply]

    Dave Reply:

@Andy, Yes they do, look at you. You’re so pressed, you’ve commented multiple times. The industry needs real talent and diversity, everyone is doing the same thing. Nicki can’t hold the game down by herself, and she’s barely doing hip hop/rap. Missy will bring true Hip Hop back. Y’all Nicki fans so pressed, and it shows because if she was so irrelevant, why are you commenting? Clearly you’re mad, jealous, pressed or threatened.

Why you throwing shade, fine a career, and spend your time on that then throwing failed shade on a blog about an artist that’s over 200 times a millionaire (250 million dollars plus networth). Still producing and doing hit singles from some of the greatest artist and biggest sellers in pop,and r&b.

    [Reply]

    Andy Reply:

@Dave, I’m going to invalidate all your sentences: 1) I commented multiple times because I simply want to. Sometimes I don’t comment at all, I wasn’t gonna do it in Missy’s post ‘cuz I like her but the kind of comments like yours actually make me pressed. 2) She has done straight rap since end of 2012, pure bars in her features in 2013 and her third album will be hardcore hip hop. Hell, even Roman Reloaded had various hip hop tracks in it. 3) Missy won’t bring anything more than wack songs that nobody will like. I hope she does good but she hasn’t showed anything special at her recent releases. Her two singles, her horrible-autotuned verse at Katy’s song… all the times I hear her, I say “what happened Missy?” 4)I’m commenting because people like you always bring that “today’s hip hop is bad”. I know you’re coming at Nicki so I’m coming for you. And, FOR GOD SAKE, not EVERY Nicki fan is hating on this post, someones are defending Missy and are excited for her. I bet 70% of Team Minaj would LOVE a collab for the third album or a featured verse. 5) Missy doesn’t have a networth at 250M. Too much delusional. 6) She hasn’t done anything that make me say she is producing “hit singles” or “for the greatest artists and biggest sellers”.

Clearly delusional and can’t accept the true. Have a nice day.

@MissyAddict, her latest singles flopped and were 100% garbage. Numbers don’t lie, and that’s exactly what make us say that she will flop. Delusional.

@MissyAddict, If it’s not in a 2 year radius don’t mention it. All that talk and she will still flop in 2014. Bringing up her winnings since World War II.

LAME EXCUSES. An artist should drop their art fearlessly. She’s hedging her bets for way too long… I mean we know Missy ain’t no Pitbull or J.LO, dropping generic schlock — and before this hiatus she was dropping a new album almost every year.

@bobs, Fearlessly if they believe in their work. If they have doubts, they won’t do.

When was the last time Missy had a hit without jumping on Katy Perry’s generic record? When was the last time she produced or wrote a top 20. When was the last time her artist charted on the hot 100? No shade, I really wanna know.
