First Look: André 3000 Is Jimi Hendrix in ‘All Is By My Side’

Prepare to see much more of André 3000 in the coming months. In addition to the OutKast reunion, the reclusive rapper stars as Jimi Hendrix in the upcoming biopic All Is By My Side, which follows the rock legend in the years prior to his fame.

Following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, the first footage from the film has surfaced online. It shows André asking Linda Keith (played by Imogen Poots) to join him at the Monterey Pop Festival.

In an interview with the AP, André explained how he prepared for the role. “I didn’t look at him as an icon because when you’re in it, you don’t know that you’re an icon,” he said. “I would just say, ‘What would Jimmy want people to know that they can’t get off of YouTube?’”

The film does not feature any of Hendrix’s music because his estate did not allow it. Instead, André will perform covers of the Beatles, Elvis, Muddy Waters, and the Troggs.

All Is By My Side will make its U.S. premiere at South By Southwest, which kicks off March 7 in Austin, Tx.

    @Ashgino,

    so arguably the greatest guitarist of all time doesn’t need/deserve to have a movie made about him?

    people actually want to see jimi’s story on screen, and they have for a while. this isn’t just a case of biopics being “in” at the moment.
