New Music: Tame Impala f/ Kendrick Lamar – ‘Backwards’

Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar continues to transcend hip-hop. After linking with Imagine Dragons on the remix to “Radioactive,” the TDE lyricist rocks with Aussie psych-rock band Tame Impala on “Backwards,” their genre-bending collaboration for the Divergent soundtrack.

K-Dot unleashes a vicious verse on top of the lush production, which is a reworking of Tame Impala’s Lonerism cut “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards.”

Due March 11, the Divergent soundtrack also features Pia Mia, Chance the Rapper, A$AP Rocky, Ellie Goulding, and more.

Listen to “Backwards” below and stream the entire soundtrack at Pitchfork.

So when Kendrick crosses genre he’s ‘transcending hiphop’ but when Nicki does it, she’s a sellout. Oh ok.

@TheOnlyOne, Nicki crosses over into generic pop that sounds like everything else on pop radio. Kendrick crosses over into psychedelic rock that isn’t generic and sounds nothing like anything other rappers this era are doing

@what, Why does it matter what genre they transcend into? Regardless, didnt really hear female rappers doing popish chartish songs like starships for example.

but one rule for one and another for the other.

@whatyourmum, never said genre mattered. my point is she doesn’t get credit for “transiting” into other genres because the music she makes is generic and unoriginal. Where as Kendrick is the complete oppposite

Love the original, but this is cool. I am a fan of both, so it good to see them come together.
