Video: Beyoncé – ‘Pretty Hurts’

Beyoncé

Beyoncé takes on the controversial world of beauty pageants in the VEVO premiere of “Pretty Hurts,” the Sia-penned, Ammo-produced ballad off her visual album. In the Melina Matsoukas-directed clip, Bey plays pageant contestant Miss 3rd Ward as she struggles with the pressure to be beautiful.

“She told me what she wanted to do with the pageant world and I obviously like to take it there,” Melina told Vulture. “I was like, ‘Let’s get into the toxic world and what we really do that is so damaging to ourselves, and use it as a microcosm for our society.’ Obviously, those ideas don’t just live in the pageant world; they live in our world.”

In an interview with The New York Times, Sia revealed that she originally sent the song to Katy Perry, but the pop star didn’t see the email. She then gave it to Rihanna, whose manager held onto it for eight months, before Beyoncé heard it.

In conjunction with the premiere, Bey has also launched the #WhatIsPretty campaign, inviting fans to upload a photo or video to Instagram that captures what the word “pretty” means to you.

    if Sia, the writter of the song sent it the song to Katy Perry and Rhianna how does beyonce recieve writters credit for a song that was already written and sent to other artist???

    @KeepingItReal, demo versions are usually different from the final version. Beyonce usually tweaks songs before she sings it . That is how a smart business woman gets writing credits.. BLOOP!

    @MYKE,

    These haters play dumb, don’t even entertain them… It’s common sense! What artist ever sticks to original content of a song? Really.

    @KeepingItReal, when you make changes to an arrangement that can be credited under writer’s credit & that’s how Bey gets some of hers if she doesn’t write. Other artists do this too!

    @KeepingItReal, I been asking the same thing. Yet these fools have the nerve to down rihanna becuz she dont write her music. I respect the fact that rihanna isnt greedy. Beyonce put her name on everything. Im sorry but great songwriters dont need other establish writers to help in with every song. Beyonce will NEVER be respected songwriter.NEVER

    @meme, beyonce is the second female EVER, FIRST African American to receive the ASCAP writing award because she has sole writing credits for me, myself and I, dangerously in love, survivor and several other songs. and contrary to popular belief, she credits the writers that she does work w/ like Dream, Miguel and Justin Timberlake. However in music, tweaking a line or two of a song sent to you allows the artist to list it as a writing credit. don’t get mad at beyonce because she doesn’t just sing what’s put in front of her but puts her own spin on it.
    thank God for karmic retribution, this track would be less than lackluster if katy or rihanna had sung it considering neither have much of a vocal range.

    Why are the quality of her videos better when she post them with Vevo rather than the ones downloaded on itunes?

    @2bad2bme, change your settings/preferences to HD and download them again. They automatically download in 480p quality. You have to manually switch it to HD.

    I love this song. It means so much because it’s like in society everyone is competing to be better in looks or whatever and it’s such a stress at times.

    I think Sia did a great job here & Beyoncé has given this track an edge that I don’t think Katy Perry or Rihanna ever could. Clearly Beyoncé put enough into the writing for Sia to be happy for her to have the credit. These two make great music together.
