New Music: Nicki Minaj – ‘Pills N Potions’

Pills N Potions

It’s finally here. Nicki Minaj debuts “Pills N Potions,” the first single off her upcoming third album The Pink Print, and it’s just what the doctor ordered. After street records like “Yass Bish!!” and “Chi-Raq,” the rap queen delivers a heart-wrenching love ballad, produced by Dr. Luke (“Va Va Voom”) and co-written by Ester Dean.

“Pills n potions / We’re overdosing / I’m angry, but I still love you,” she sings on the hook.

“It feels very uplifting and it feels very soulful,” Nicki told Rap-Up TV. “It’s a great, I feel, indicator of what The Pink Print will feel like in terms of the storyline of that song.”

The follow-up to 2012′s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, due later this year, marks a return to her roots. “The Pink Print will remind people why they fell in love with Nicki Minaj,” she said. “And I think that needs to be done.”

Hear Nicki pour her heart out on the personal anthem.

@Jordan K., people have to understand she needs that crossover single. If she does only that hardcore raps (which I love), the single will barely chart, and the album will be hot for two weeks and then banish.

Like, Drake fcking did it last year and he fcking slayed. Eminem couldn’t get a right hit until he released Monster. Macklemore is a rapper and he slayed with his radio friendly singles.

This is 2014, artists can do whatever the fck they want. Nicki can do another Starships if she wants to. Just closed-minded faggots believe she should do what they demand her to do.

Whether you like the song is another story LOL

Like, Drake fcking did it last year and he fcking slayed with Hold On. Eminem couldn’t get a right hit until he released crossover Monster, same with Jay-Z with Holy Grail (more R&B). Macklemore is a hip hop artist who dominate charts with his radio-friendly songs.

Nicki can do whatever the fck she wants to do. She can release another Starships and you’ll deal. She’s a rapper with pop appeal because she is not afraid of acting soft (like a real lady) unlike other females rappers who just rely on their sex appeal and “hood” attitude.

IT IS 2014. Artists don’t need to follow the same genre. HECK, its the XXI century, artists have done crossover songs all the time.

Nicki has a MAJOR hit on her hands. As soon as the hook dropped, I said “Top 40 / Crossover Appeal”. Very sing a long, and the fact they chose this as the first reminds me of how she released Pink Friday. Right Thru Me was catchy, easy to sing along with, and had the same tone to it. If it ain’t broke don’t break it seems to be the formula YMCMB stuck to for these new releases. Carter V, Pink Print, BRING THE REALNESS.

It’s radio friendly, it’s real music, it’s Hip Hop, it’s witty, it got edge. Nice first single. Oh & Justin Timberlake are always first to comment as usual. How dare people say this is better than Fancy when that Australian Kangaroo wasn’t saying sh*t on that song.

    [Reply]

    Truther Reply:

@GEEZUS, But her song is definitely saying sh*t on the charts sitting at #3 on Billboard Hot 100. You really don’t have to say much when your song is slaying billboard Hot 100. Iggy Got It you just sit back and watch the show :)

    [Reply]

    Chyna Reply:

@Truther, Fancy is only sitting on the charts because of the catchy hook. Iggy is good but not that good , she doesn’t have that IT factor like Nicki has. On a scale of 1-10 , Iggy’s delivery and lyrics in Fancy rank at a 5. Nicki is coming , she got this, she knows what she’s doing. YOU just sit back and watch the show :) 3RD ERA has OFFICIALLY ARRIVED.

    [Reply]

    Truther Reply:

@Chyna, Most songs need a catchy hook in order to sell whats your point? Its still Iggys song which means that she sees the benefits of the songs charting performance. You know nothing about how Billboard charts work. Iggy is going to see 6 figure residual checks from it being Top 3 Billboard Hot 100. And Def Jam will cut her a big check as well. So honestly say what u want but theres nothing you can do to change that chyna sorry hun.

    [Reply]

@Truther, Yeah, Iggy finally getting to the charts after Work, Bounce, Change Ya Life and Murda Bizness flopped lol

    [Reply]

    Truther Reply:

@Hola, It doesn’t matter its still a hit and there isn’t anything you can do about it. Fact of the matter is Iggy is still going to get a huge check because of Fancy selling 1 Million + downloads on iTunes and it charting in Top 3 on Billboard. Hate all you want. And Iggys tour shows sell out. She’s not going anywhere.

    [Reply]

    Preach Reply:

@Hola, From what i recall didn’t Nicki Minaj first few singles flop when she first came out. Massive Attack = Flop and didn’t chart at all on Billboard Hot 100. Atleast iggys first single charted on Billboard Hot 100. Its not easy for an artist first official single to Go top 10 most artists have to release several songs before one actually makes it top 40.

Dr. Luke produces for Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Kesha, Pink, Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus (wrecking ball.) So, of course it’s kind of catchy and very poppy, but it also gets kind of boring. I can’t imagine radio audiences sitting through this song.. maybe.

Still it’s a total POP song. Safe choice and reminds me of watered down version of Wrecking Ball.

The song is actually pretty decent after a few listens. I think this is one of them songs people will listen to if they’re going through relationship issues. The song is not too pop-ish but it still has a slight pop effect. It is a different sound from her, which was I was hoping from her. I believe it can hit Top 40, but if it wants to hit Top 10, it’ll take A LOT of promotion. I can believe she can do it. But overall, it is a nice song and it is single-worthy. I usually hate when Nicki sings but the chorus is the best part of this song.
    The verses are kinda weak.
This isn’t what I was expecting as the first single at all……
I would like this song more if it was completely vocal and no rap………..with a different artist singing the whole song. AllShade

I am a big Nicki Minaj fan, for real, but this was just the biggest break of expectations. She released DOPE songs and verses (Lookin Ass, Yass Bish, Chi-raq, Danny Glover, Senile to name a few) and came up with a pop song? I understand she said it was gonna be soulful but pop?

Nicki was going hard on her rap, proving once again there is no female that rhymes and has a flow as sick as hers. And she drops a songs that is sung more than it is rapped.
Don’t get me wrong, I like some of her pop songs and all but I was expecting Nicki to come rapping like she said on numerous interviews.

This made me crave for the mixtape over the album. Though I hope she builds a good body of work with The Pink Print because that’s her last frontier: a solid rap album. Hip Hop through and through.

As for Pills and Potions, I don’t hate it. It’s a good song. But I won’t be listening to it full volume in my car. I will have to stick to Lookin Ass, Chi-raq and Yass Bish for now.

@mtxx, I agree. I like Nicki. She’s the Queen in rap right now. But this isn’t like a Omg single. But again. I’m a realist. We won’t like every single song she releases. It’s ok if she makes a bad song. Omg. People are so hard on this artist. Like they always have to smash hit. Let her experiment. Damn people are so fucking judgmental. Who are y’all to put a expectation out there for these artist. Then get mad when they don’t live up to it? Don’t like it? Go listen to Iggy.

Loving this song, it’s not the ‘slayage’ I was hoping for and by that I mean it wasnt a ratchet/trap song where she goes hard, but it’s still a great song! It’s pretty and its catchy and she’s rapping about real shit in her life and not just random ass words that dont make sense.

The Pink Print will probably be Nickis realest most iconic album yet and if you disagree, sorry that you like being wrong? Lol

    [Reply]

  59. Phildesu

People complaining about her releasing this as her first single when she released dope songs like Lookin Ass/Yasss Bish/Boss Ass Bitch remix, those songs won’t get radio play. I mean some more urban stations might choose to play them, but this song is a smart move if Nicki wants to get in the top 10-20 on billboard/itunes, which in turn gives her album more promo, which in turn makes people listen to the gangsta shit more.

It’s a business, there’s so many marketing strategies that go into putting out singles and y’all need to realize this. This single isn’t terrible, its just not Nicki going in to a trap beat, it’s a softer side, but in the long run making this the first single over a song like Lookin Ass (think about that radio edit and how controversial it is, won’t be a top 10 hit) will give her more promo/help the album do well. Just because she isn’t releasing EXACTLY what you an individual want doesnt mean shit, she’s a business women.

She will still make songs like lookin ass and chi-raq, so who really cares what the first official single is? You’re still getting music you want and Nicki is still making money so stop QQing and support the queen~

    [Reply]

    Deejay Reply:

@Phildesu, I completely understand what you’re saying about releasing a single that’s more marketable but I think that everyone’s biggest issue from what I’ve read is that she just didn’t deliver on her rap verses. Just because you’re releasing a single that’s more diverse for radio doesn’t mean that you need to water your rap down to be so bland. I felt like I was listening to my niece spit a rap that she wrote about her little boyfriend. It’s nothing new. Not groundbreaking. Repetitive. Slightly winey. And just unnecessary at this point in her career. I can’t.

    [Reply]

    Phildesu Reply:

@Deejay, Look at Nickis past single choices. Which songs made the biggest impact on the charts?

    Your Love
    Right Thru Me
    Starships
    Super Bass
    Right By My Side

The only ‘hard’ sounding songs that did well (and still nowhere near as well as the ones listed up there) were

    Beez In The Trap
    Moment 4 Life
Did It On Em? I really can’t think of any other rap/mixtape sounding songs that did that well, not that I’m saying they flopped, but compared to songs like Potions n Pills, Nicki knows what to release and what will work in terms of a single/climbing those charts, she always does this.

She released Your Love/Right Thru me then she followed up with M4L/Did It On Em first on Pink Friday

Starships/Right By My Side then followed up with Beez In The Trap/IAYL on PF:RR

Freedom on The Re-Up then followed up with Highschool/Up In Flames.

The next thing she releases will probably be right up your alley I’m sure.

@Deejay, Just think of it this way, every album cycle Nicki gives us a R&B single, a Pop single, and a Rap single. We already got the pop one out of the way this cycle, so that should make you happy :P

    [Reply]

    Andy Reply:

@Deejay, is really meant to be at pop radio. You can’t have hard bars like LAN or Chi-Raq being played at radios. An example Pildesu gave you was Did it on ‘em. That song goes hard as hell and didn’t charted at all at Hot 100. Nicki pop songs sell alone just look at Pound the Alarm and VaVaVoom. She performed PTA once and VVV none and those were top 40 hits. Last year Drake needed to rely in his pop/r&b single Hold On.

It’s not terrible but it’s pretty basic. It’s missing a wow factor, especially as the first single. She must not care about album sales but instead pure artistry this time around. This song will probably flop, but might flow nicely on the album.

A lot of naysayers on here… I think the song sounds good. But I do believe she released this for the top 10 spot. I think once this single does well she will release an urban friendly single. That’s a smart thing to do. Onika knows what the hell she is doing. That Oh person is LITERALLY just a crab, as much as IT comments you’d expect it to just join Team Minaj. If she wants to label this the “first single” from her album she should probably release something that carries the tone for the rest of the album and didn’t she say that it’s going to be more reminiscent of her mixtape days? This is still the borderline pop B.S. that was on her last album.

@leaveitbae, I thout it sounded like lORDE TOO BUT ITS BLAND. it’s missing her dope harmonies. Soul? where. Nicki needs a kanye production for what she is looking for. He can take an old school sample and put a bangin beat behind it, give it more. She needs a better “your love.” The production, way that song was structured and whole vibe was nice on that one. That was a nice soft song for her.

I like Lookin and chiraq and even yass bish but I know those won’t help her chart. But she should give a free mixtape with her bonus album. limited edition. That would sell.

I lost faith, but then I’m hearing LAN and CR and YB and I’m getting all hyped just to be destroyed by this garbage. How the hell she gonna say she’s not doing doing no pop mess when this was produced by the king of mainstream generic pop radio garbage lol?!!? I get her pop singles chart better, but that right there shows she’s a sell out and idk how yall don’t see that??? If she truly cares about her fans she would cater to us and give us a real hiphop album and not give a f*** about how the singles chart and just do it for the music. Who can actually carry a tune, sing, AND WRITE A HIT FOR OTHER PEOPLE ;) plus auto-tuning & digital enhancement to make it seem like she can actually carry a tune…Just like she did with that “Right Thru Me”, “Your Love”, & Moment For Life” sh*t…If she’s acting like she single handedly produced this then she’s still as ficticious & fraudulent as she ever was, and will always remain like that…
