New Music: Ariana Grande f/ Zedd – ‘Break Free’

My Everything

While her Iggy Azalea-assisted hit “Problem” continues its reign on the charts, Ariana Grande delivers the electrifying follow-up “Break Free.” Produced by Zedd and Max Martin, the pulsing EDM number has officially entered the race for song of the summer.

The 21-year-old singer recently shot a video, which was inspired by the 1960s sci-fi film Barbarella.

“It’s inspired by Jane Fonda in Barbarella and Star Wars and space,” Ariana told Ryan Seacrest. “It’s more throwback, campy.”

Her sophomore album My Everything drops August 25 featuring Big Sean, The Weeknd, A$AP Ferg, and Childish Gambino, plus a bonus track with Nicki Minaj and Jessie J (“Bang Bang”).

The day before her album release, Ariana will perform “Break Free” at the MTV Video Music Awards in L.A.

Sounds like everything else that “dominates the top charts”

Katy Perry + Lady Gaga + Pitbull, cheap sounding tinny beats.

No originality. The music industry sucks so bad. Such a waste because she is so talented too.

@Malika, I agree. I could only see me listening to it while Im in the gym, because of the beat. That says it all.

The song is no. Why are they still pushing EDM?

She needs to discover and learn to adequately use the other parts of her voice.

Variation is necessary. That applies to everything about her.

C’mon Ariana, you’re better than this trash.

@KEN., EXACTLY. Im afraid that the album will be full of bangers like the ones we already heard, just to sell more and appeal to a more grown and less Disney population.

Nothing new, nothing special. Why is she doing it to herself? The R&B root was perfect for her but no let’s better make her to a Pop/EDM singer smh at this industry…

I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt. People said the album is pop/rnb. A lot of artist release a generic track just get a overall interest for the album. Still excited for the video and performance!

Ppl relax. It’s 1 sound. I swear if these artist listen to you guys they would never perform at their full potentials. How any r&b songs have Ariana given us? Nothing wrong with switching it up for 1 single. If it’s not your taste then move into the next.

Wow, some of these guys are really harsh… I love it, another upbeat song for the summer, targeted to teens, parties, a perfect song to play when the party’s getting boring. What do you want from her? Do you want her to sing boring slow songs? This song’s a happy-feeling track. Not cheap, very original, and Zedd did a fantastic job on the production. A summer jammer to me. Some of these “critics” need to calm it down.

@Quinton, artistry, substance, (her own) style, and individuality. Not “cute” and “chill” and for “teens.”

@Quinton, I agree. It sounds fine to me. The girl isn’t even 21 yet. She’s still making music for her demographic. Its not a hit, but its cute n catchy.

it’s crazy how it sounds exactly like everything out there but her !!! You can really tell that she doesn’t think for herself and doesn’t work by herself (about choosing the music that she wanna do) and just follows what her label tells her to do !
    #PUPPET #NOSTYLE #FINDYOURVOICE
The artwork looks like a rip off Mariah and the song sounds like Rihanna on some parts, Katy Perry on the beginning of the hook, Madonna on some other parts, and some crap straight out of cheap pop but there’s no new artist on this ! Britney could sing this and that’s not a compliment

    [Reply]

    Mike Reply:

@Khayss, You are really trying arent you??? If you knew anything, most successful artists have to prove themselves before the label allows them to just create what the hell they want. Plus, Ariana is like 20 years old, so you’re telling me that you knew who you were at 20…thats assuming that you’ve even made it to that age yet. Plus, you must not listen to Britney…theres no way she could have made this song the powerhouse anthem that it is. Khayss have a seat!

Goodness, they way you guys talked about this song, I didn’t think I was gonna like it. But I do!! Honestly, think it’s great that Ariana is dabbling into other genres in the business. She already knows she’s great at R&B and that’s no argument from the success of The Way on the music charts. If anything this might be a nice filler song on the album, but with the features and collaborations she’s got lined up, I’m def buying it. Be a little open minded people. In the end, she always said she wanted to make music cuz that’s what makes her happy and she’s doing just that.

My lawd! Ya’ll spaz out on one song. If a third of half the album was like this I’d be pissed. But it’s one song. C’mon when you listen to an album you like two or 3 different tracks from the norm…

We know who she is…let her get a little dance joint in there.

No, ma’am at this mess sounding like a half-baked “Only Girl”/Pitbull mash-up. I’ve had problems with her music in the past (she has horrible enunciation, she seemed like she was getting by purely on the nostalgia factor), but I respected that she gravitated toward r&b in favor of the same Dr. Luke-type pop that dominated the radio.

This, though? A sell-out move and not even a good one, at that. This sound is tired and it’s not the type that makes people buy whole albums. She might sell a few cute singles, but what’s going to inspire people to pay 11.99 for her album?

  22. The Truth

    1) Ariana Grande does not make R&B Music, there is a distinction between R&B music and Pop music with R&B influences.
    2) She could be a fan of EDM and want to try and make music that has an EDM base. It doesn’t make her unoriginal or negate her artistry.

The song is a tough tune & since all of your negative opinions are just so “valid”, you all should start your own labels, and allow others to judge you.

Wow. A lot of hate but I like it. I DO NOT LOVE IT. Ariana has a great voice so she could probably make anything sound great. My issue is that I love a lot of ZEDD’s music and I feel like this track didn’t have that “all out” part of the song that just makes you want to lose it and dance. His climaxes are what makes his songs great… It’s missing here and I’m sure that has to do with the Max Martin collab or maybe they just wanted to try something different.
Overall, I know y’all are not feeling it because she has kind of made herself a lane in that “Pop w/ Soulful Sensibilities” and the EDM thing is slightly overdone, but the truth is – Dance/House music has been using soulful melodies and vocals for the LONGEST time. (i.e. “Rhythm is a Dancer” “What is Love” & “Good Vibrations” [All 90's Dance/House music]) EDM/EuroPop is just the 2000′s extension of that sound with more generic lyrics. Different doesn’t always equate to bad. Sometimes you just have to expand your tastes to like certain things and if you don’t like it, you just don’t.
PROMOTE WHAT YOU LOVE INSTEAD OF BASHING WHAT YOU HATE. If you don’t like it, a simple “ehh, I don’t like it.” will do. That goes for ANYTHING from ANY ARTIST.

It’s actually well produced EDM track but:
    1. Generic as hell.
    2. Poorly written.
    3. Doesn’t compliment Ariana’s ability to sing. I’d say it even shadows her voice.
    4. This record is obviously dictated by the label policy and industry rules.

I think her 1st album was very strong for a debut. The next one will be commercial and charts oriented.

We will hear the real Ariana when her managers earn enough money and let her do what she want. Maybe she won’t be popular then but true music lovers never care.

To everyone saying there’s only one song like this on the album: YOU DO SEE THE CASHMERE CAT FEATURE RIGHT? YOU DO KNOW CASHMERE CAT IS ANOTHER DJ RIGHT? Just wanted to point that out. This album is ment for charts and radio to eat up. The only thing I’m really excited for is the A$AP Ferg feature. Bringing some trap to this experimental.

I think she has the depth in her voice to pull off a track like this. I think it’s ok; nowhere near as good as Better Left Unsaid.

Her album come out on the day that the late R&b singer Aaliyah haughton died 15 or 14 years ago in 2001 and this song is alright not too many people may like it. At least she is doing her thing but who in the heck is zedd? Never heard of that person before
