Lauryn Hill Covers Nina Simone’s ‘Feeling Good’

Lauryn Hill pays tribute to Nina Simone as part of Netflix’s upcoming Nina Simone documentary, What Happened, Miss Simone? The former Fugees frontwoman delivers a stirring cover of the blues legend’s 1965 classic “Feeling Good.”

According to Rolling Stone, Hill originally agreed to record two songs for the film, but she was so moved that she ended up recording six. She also serves as the album’s producer alongside Robert Glasper.

“Because I fed on this music, both hers and lovers like her, like my basic food, I believed I always had a right to have a voice,” said Hill, who performed a tribute to Simone at the Apollo Theater earlier this month. “Her example is clearly a form of sustenance to a generation needing to find theirs. What a gift.”

Other artists featured on the compilation, due July 10, include Mary J. Blige, Usher, Common, Jazmine Sullivan, and Simone’s daughter Lisa.

Ms. Hill will receive the Golden Note Award at ASCAP’s 28th annual Rhythm & Soul Music Awards on June 25.
