Remy Ma, Eve, & Trina Pay Tribute to Missy Elliott at VH1's 'Hip Hop Honors'

  /  07.12.2016

All hail Missy Elliott.

After a six-year hiatus, VH1’s “Hip Hop Honors” returned last night to celebrate the queens of hip-hop including Lil’ Kim, Queen Latifah, Salt-N-Pepa, and Missy Elliott, who was honored by some of her closest friends and collaborators.

Following an introduction from Busta Rhymes, Timbaland, and Angie Martinez, Remy Ma, Nelly Furtado, Eve, and Trina paid respect to Misdemeanor with a medley of her hits. Remy kicked things off with “Work It” before Nelly Furtado took the stage to “Get Ur Freak On.” Eve handled her verse on “Hot Boyz” and Miss Trina slayed “One Minute Man.” The performance capped off with Remy, who performed Missy’s latest hit “WTF (Where I’m From).”

As if that wasn’t enough, Fantasia, Monica, and Tweet celebrated Missy later in the evening with an R&B medley of “Free Yourself,” “So Gone,” and “Oops (Oh My).” The trio’s finale also received rousing applause, as they joined forces for a brief portion of “Lady Marmalade.”

Missy looked on with a smile as she sang and rapped along to the tributes. Plus, she was likely also beaming when she heard Pharrell’s words about her distinct sound.

“I would be nervous to try to describe Missy’s sound,” he said in a pre-taped video. “The minute you call it something, she will elevate and show you that you have no idea what you’re talking about…Her sound, her way of doing things, is all one thing: It’s just Missy.”

This wasn’t the first time VH1’s “Hip Hop Honors” paid respect to Missy. She was also given a tribute back in 2007 as an honoree along with A Tribe Called Quest, Snoop Dogg, Whodini, Teddy Riley, Andre Harrell, and the movie Wild Style.
