Sevyn Streeter Debuts New Music, Covers Lauryn Hill at Rap-Up LIVE

  /  10.21.2016

Sevyn Streeter got up close and personal with her Street Team at Rap-Up LIVE on Tuesday evening (Oct. 18).

In anticipation of her debut album Girl Disrupted in early 2017, the R&B songstress treated fans to an intimate performance at Rap-Up HQ in Los Angeles. It marked the second installment of Rap-Up’s in-studio series, which kicked off in April with JoJo.

Sevyn served up fan favorites and new material during her powerful 30-minute set, opening with “My Love for You.” From there, she basked under pink lights as she performed “D4L” and ignited the crowd with a soulful cover of Lauryn Hill’s “Ex-Factor” classic.

“[Lauryn Hill] is an artist that I’ve always been obsessed with,” said Sevyn, before delivering her take on the Miseducation cut. “I used to take her CD and listen to it over and over and over again in my room.”

But L-Boogie wasn’t the only one getting love from Sevyn. After debuting a brand new song called “Before I Do” — which is sure to get plenty of spins as we get closer to Girl Disrupted — Streeter also stopped to acknowledge her devoted fans.

“I love being here,” she said. “I can see your faces and it means the absolute world to me. I see your tweets, comments, and they give me life on days where I feel like I just want to stay in bed and cry.

“I’ll be honest with you guys,” she added. “Being an artist today is not easy. I’m very open about my personal struggles within this industry and for all of y’all to be here today in support of this little brown skin girl from Haines City, Florida with my country ass, it means the world to me.”

Continuing with the empowerment theme, Sevyn spoke about the importance of self-love and authenticity to the crowd, which featured special guests like Bridget Kelly and producers Mars and Bongo.

“I love my skin,” she said. “But it also means something when you have people who appreciate you for what you do and appreciate you for who you are and don’t want you to change anything. You don’t care that I ain’t got no big ass up here.”

That impassioned speech smoothly led Sevyn into a performance of her Chris Brown-assisted hit “It Won’t Stop.” Sans Breezy, Streeter delivered a rousing solo rendition of the 2013 standout before closing with the club banger “Prolly.”

Guests thirsty for more “Prolly” got to taste some at the bar. The evening featured signature drinks, like Prolly Punch, Sevyn-Up, and Rap-Up Code with D’USSÉ.

Before capping off the night, Sevyn had some kind words to share about Rap-Up and her fan club. “Make some noise for Rap-Up,” she said. “Street Team, make some noise for yourselves…I love y’all so much. Thank you for coming out and rocking with me.”

Lucky Street Teamers won tickets to see Sevyn in-person while others were able to tune in via Facebook Live. If you missed out, watch the full set below.
