Rihanna Opens Up About 'Valerian' Role

  /  07.04.2017

Get your popcorn ready. Just weeks before Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets hits theaters, Rihanna is opening up about the sci-fi film, in which she stars as Bubble, a gorgeous entertainer.

Speaking with Lain Networks, RiRi explained how she became involved with the film, after meeting director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element, Taken 2), who’s been working on the picture for almost a decade.

“He kind of just explored the whole world and explained the vision and my character Bubble,” she said. “I loved it. I thought it was really cool. Sci-fi movies are always really fun and this one has such a modern twist. There’s a lot of reality in this world that’s not real and that’s why I think I was attached to it.”

RiRi was also excited about portraying her character Bubble, a cabaret performer, who also appears in the film’s trailer. “She’s in this place, she has to perform, and the thing that makes her feel free is her performing,” she explained. “Her being an artist, her becoming whatever, and making people feel happy that way. She’s an entertainer.”

Aside from going “from look to look,” including an intricate depiction of Cleopatra, Rihanna said she also had a great time working with Besson.

“He is especially very patient when it comes to working and directing me,” she said. “I’m very new to the movie world and he’s very considerate of that. He knows exactly how to get what he wants out of you and that’s what a director is.”

Starring Cara Delevingne, Dane Dehaan, Clive Owen, and Ethan Hawke, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is due in theaters July 21.
