New Music: Skillz - '2017 Rap Up'

  /  01.01.2018

Another year, another Mad Skillz “Rap Up.” Keeping with his annual tradition, the Virginia veteran unleashed his latest musical recap, detailing the year that was in rhyme form.

The 2017 edition includes references to some major moments in the music world, including Beyoncé’s viral twin reveal, Nicki Minaj and Meek Mill’s tumultuous breakup, and the continued “mumble rap” debate. It also made nods to tracks like Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow,” SZA’s “The Weekend,” Lil Uzi Vert’s “XO TOUR Llif3,” and Kendrick Lamar’s “HUMBLE.”

“Some of y’all should sit down, bitch, be humble / Music had a little rap, and had a whole lot of mumble,” he rapped, later adding: “Lotta wild, wild thots, gettin’ it in / If all your friends are dead, you should get new friends.”

Additionally, Skillz took on some current events, including President Donald Trump’s controversial tweets, Colin Kaepernick’s police brutality protests, NFL boycotts, the Las Vegas massacre, the Manchester bombing, the California fires, and the sexual assault scandals that rocked Hollywood.

“Harvey Weinstein out here wildin’,” rapped Skillz. “He touched like 45 women and they wouldn’t be silenced / Stop with the sexual violence / 45 though, bro? That’s like a Chris Brown album.”
