Logic Signs $30 Million Def Jam Deal

  /  03.12.2018

Fresh off his mixtape Bobby Tarantino II, Logic is living the good life, which includes a lucrative deal with Def Jam.

During his interview with Beats 1 host Zane Lowe, the Maryland rapper confirmed that he signed a new deal with his label worth $30 million. “When I first signed my deal, the advance was like 200 grand,” he said. “So going from Section 8 and food stamps and welfare to 200 grand was life-changing, but the life change I’m talking about is the $30 million-dollar deal I just signed. That shit freaked me out. I felt like a target.”

Logic alluded to the deal on the Big Sean-assisted “Wassup” off his latest mixtape. “I just updated my old deal,” he raps on the 6ix-produced cut. “Told Def Jam no less than 20 mill…and they cut that shit!”

BTII is now on pace to top the Billboard 200 with 110-125,000 equivalent album units (27-32,000 traditional). Meanwhile, he’s working on his next full-length album, which he describes as a fusion between James Brown and Red Hot Chili Peppers, with help from Travis Barker. Beyond music, he is writing a novel and working on his first film, which he wrote.

Next, he hints at a solo arena tour and hopes to join Drake for a co-headlining jaunt. But regardless what happens, he says he’s thrilled. “Bro, I’m so happy, bro,” he exclaimed. “I have everything I could have ever wanted in my life, bro. Do you understand? I can tour the world. I can do movies, books, chill, take care of my family? I’m stoked!”

Read additional details about Bobby Tarantino II, his inspirations, and his future aspirations, below.

On Wiz Khalifa: “I’m not trying to sound bias. That’s like my favorite verse he’s ever done. I love it. He’s spittin’. That’s the one person that I hadn’t met but I did work with…We’ve met but not in person.”

On 2 Chainz: “The first time I met Chainz was at Def Jam in the CEO’s office when I just signed. My man is tall. He’s like 8’9”. He stands up and he’s like, “Yeah!” He gave me that 2 Chainz ad-lib as I’m meeting him. He was eating a shrimp lobster pasta. I was like, ‘This is the most gangster shit of all time.'”

On Big Sean: “I was trying to get the verse from him forever. He’s a busy guy. I was like, ‘Yo! I need that shit. Come on, dawg. I gotta master my shit.’ He sends me the verse and I’m like, ‘This is insane. This is so crazy. You making me…I gotta rap.’ He calls me and he goes, ‘Don’t be trying to outran me, Logic.'”

On Kid Cudi: “He inspired me to talk about anxiety or mental health. He was the dude that was like, ‘It’s OK to be sad and talk about these things and go through these things.'”

On Drake and Childish Gambino: “They are where they are because they always stayed them no matter what. Drake shows me nothing but love…As an actor, seeing these transitions that they have. Drake doesn’t realize, in many ways, he was like the big brother I never had. He set the example and paved the way for me to be myself. Now, whether I’m at the Grammys or whether I’m here or there, or whatever, he’ll show me love…People don’t realize what that’s like, what that means.”

On His Novel: “It’s a work of fiction but it all stems from my life. It’s about a guy who’s writing a book for the first time, as I’m writing a book for the first time. It’s called Supermarket. I worked at a supermarket, a couple supermarkets.”

On Film: “I wrote a film and I was going to fund it myself for around $5 million. I wanted it to be a really fun indie like Juno…Super dope indie. It’s a comedy. I went and spoke with somebody that I revere and appreciate in film and he was basically like, ‘You wrote a movie?’ He gave it to his people and they were like, ‘This is insane. We want to make your movie.'”

On His Next Album: “I went to Maui and set up to work on some music there that’s not out yet. I’ve got a lot of music. From Maui, I went to Tokyo…I always wanted to go there…It was all live instrumentation…James Brown meets the [Red Hot] Chili Peppers. Crazy. Super dope vibe. Travis Barker on the drums…Crazy.”

On His Next Tour: “I’m pretty excited because I might be doing some arenas on my own…There might be a tour coming or something. Honestly, you know who I really wanna go on tour with? Drake.”
