Big Sean and Common

Shine bright like a diamond. Common connects with his G.O.O.D. Music brother Big Sean in the black-and-white video for “Diamonds,” which was shot last month in L.A.

“It’s a performance-based video, but [the director] is using our images to blend into all these things that represent those shining elements,” the Chicago MC told Rap-Up TV.

The No I.D.-produced song will appear on his album Nobody’s Smiling, which also features Jhené Aiko, Cocaine 80s, Elijah Blake, and Vince Staples.

New Music: Common f/ Big Sean – ‘Diamonds’

Diamonds

Common gets his shine on on “Diamonds,” the latest release from his upcoming album Nobody’s Smiling. The Chicago MC grabs his G.O.O.D. Music brother Big Sean for the feel-good track, which boasts a knocking beat courtesy of No I.D.

“No matter what situation you gotta get to shining,” Common told Rap-Up TV. “I’m talking about shining for today, not waiting for tomorrow. You just gotta embody it now.”

“This record is on some newness for real now. Sean brought his own perspective and made it bounce even more and just automatically when you hear Sean on the chorus, you feel like this song could be in the club, on the radio, but it’s not reaching. I’m kicking an MC verse.”

The two recently recently shot a video in L.A. “It’s a performance-based video, but [the director] is using our images to blend into all these things that represent those shining elements,” said Common.

Nobody’s Smiling drops July 22 featuring appearances from Jhené Aiko, Cocaine 80s, Elijah Blake, and Vince Staples.

Rap-Up TV: Common Makes ‘Majik’ with Jhené Aiko, Talks Kanye’s ‘Royal’ Wedding

Twenty years after the release of his critically-acclaimed album Resurrection, Common reunites with No I.D. on Nobody’s Smiling. During his trip to L.A. this week, the hip-hop veteran sat down with Rap-Up TV to discuss his 10th album, which arrives July 22 via Def Jam.

The concept-driven project, inspired by the violence in Chicago, includes appearances from Cocaine 80s, Elijah Blake, Vince Staples, and Jhené Aiko, who is featured on the No I.D.-produced “Blak Majik.”

“Jhené Aiko is an artist that I truly respect,” said Common. “I think she has a unique voice in music, in culture. When I say unique voice, not only is it her singing voice, but her perspective, who she is, what she offers to the world is something that’s very, very special. It’s a soul to it. It’s a spirit to it.”

“I wanted to team up with her and do a song that was fresh. I called it ‘Blak Majik’ because I say we make something out of nothing,” he explained. “It’s also a feel-good, fun song, but it’s hard, it’s rough. It’s something special about that song too.”

He also worked with his G.O.O.D. Music brother Big Sean on “Diamonds,” for which a video was recently shot in L.A. “‘Diamonds’ for me, talks about shining. You got shine no matter what. No matter what situation you gotta get to shining. I’m talking about shining for today, not waiting for tomorrow. You just gotta embody it now.”

While he didn’t work with Kanye West on this album, he did attend his fairytale wedding. “That was a very special wedding in the way that it was fun,” he said. “I had been to Italy, but never to Florence. It felt very family-oriented, very simple but beautiful, and it felt like they cared about the guests. The way we were treated, it was royal. Everything was simple and beautiful and we had the best time.”

Big Sean Takes Over Detroit High School as Principal

Sway and Big Sean

Big Sean is giving back in a big way. The G.O.O.D. Music rapper took over Detroit high school Bates Academy as “Celebrity Principal for a Day” on Thursday. He helped recognize students for improving their attendance and winning Get Schooled and Viacom’s Detroit Attendance Challenge.

“It’s just cool to come back and just see the kids so excited and it all be for a good cause,” said Sean, who graduated high school with a 3.6 GPA.

The students greeted the “Beware” hitmaker with signs and a special cheer as he arrived with his mother Myra and gave out hugs.

He freestyled for them and shared some advice during a Q&A with MTV’s Sway. “The best way to study is with your homies,” he said. “If you got some dumb friends, don’t study with them.”

This is the second time Sean has served as “Principal for a Day.” He previously surprised students at Lincoln High School in 2012.

Big Sean and Rihanna Hit the Studio

Big Sean and Rihanna

Are Big Sean and Rihanna cooking up a collaboration? The Detroit rapper hit the studio with the “Most Desirable Woman” in L.A. last night, sharing the moment on Instagram. RiRi rocked a bucket hat and Trapstar T-shirt while standing next to Sean, who was decked out in a BAPE tee.

“My niggaz #FinallyFamous #FFOE,” tweeted Sean, who was also joined by his Finally Famous crew members SAYITAINTTONE and Earlly Mac.

Over the weekend, Sean was in the studio with “We Found Love” producer Calvin Harris (Could Rihanna be featured on the song?).

While we can only speculate, we do know that Sean has been hard at work on the follow-up to last year’s Hall of Fame.

A banner read “Welcome Home CB!” and he was presented with a birthday cake (He spent his 25th birthday behind bars).

Karrueche was clearly happy to have her man back. She posted a photo of them kissing, writing, “Welcome home.”

Chris has reportedly vowed to stay off drugs and remove all negative influences from his life so that he never has to see jail again.
