M.I.A. and Janelle Monáe Team Up for Hologram Duet

Janelle Monáe and M.I.A.

Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg brought out a hologram of Tupac at Coachella in 2012, and M.I.A. and Janelle Monáe debuted their own holograms on Thursday as part of Audi’s A3 launch.

The British rapper and Wondaland singer performed solo concerts in different cities, teaming up at the end of their shows as life-sized 3D projections in what’s being called “the first hologram performance with integrated video mapping.”

Janelle rocked the stage at Quixote Studios in West Hollywood, while M.I.A. played to a packed crowd at New York’s SIR Stage 37.

During “Bad Girls,” a hologram Janelle spit a new verse alongside M.I.A., while Janelle performed “Q.U.E.E.N.” with a life-size hologram of M.I.A.

“The idea is that we teleport into each other’s show,” said M.I.A. “There’s a show and then it goes beyond the space where you’re performing and the city where you’re performing, so that’s what’s kind of interesting about it.”

Watch their hologram duet below.

M.I.A. Performs on ‘The Colbert Report’

M.I.A.

M.I.A. brought Matangi to “The Colbert Report” on Wednesday. After wrapping her brief U.S. tour last week, the Sri Lankan rapper performed her single “Y.A.L.A.” with a red and green effect made to look like her album cover. For the non-televised encore, she continued with “Come Walk With Me.”

She also sat down for an interview and spoke about mixing politics with her music. “I was really inspired by a lot of American artists like Bob Dylan, Public Enemy,” she said. “So about the time I put out my first song and came to America, I thought you guys were used to it already. I didn’t realize it was so shocking.”

When asked what she thinks of the U.S., she responded, “I think it’s an interesting place, adding, “In my mind, there’s no countries. We’re all one. We all live on this planet.”
