Pharrell Williams Sings in the Rain on ‘Today’ Concert Series

Pharrell Williams

Two days after rocking the Apollo Theater for American Express UNSTAGED, Pharrell Williams brought some sunshine to Rockefeller Plaza for the Toyota Summer Concert Series. Despite the stormy weather, the seven-time Grammy winner performed his upbeat hits including “Come Get It Bae” and “Happy” with some help from his female dancers, the Baes.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Pharrell said of his success. “I never expected any of this. I’m surrounded by amazing talent.”

He will join “The Voice” as a coach next season. “My wife has always been obsessed with [the show], so we always watch it,” he said. “I never imagined being up there, either. All of this is a great surprise. It’s just awesome.”

He also shared his obsession with late scientist Carl Sagan, whose photo he requested in his dressing room.

“I watched ‘Cosmos’ as a child and I was always blown away by [Sagan's] mind and the way he thought,” said Pharrell. “When I look at that picture I realize how lucky we all are … to be on this planet and be able to do what we love to do every day. Seeing Carl’s face reminds me of it.”

Ed Sheeran and Pharrell

Puppets go wild in the video for Ed Sheeran’s single “Sing.” The red-haired Brit transforms into a muppet version of himself as he takes on the town.

He sings karaoke at a bar in Chinatown and parties with a limo full of ladies before hitting the strip club. The puppet later meets up with his likeness and they get drunk together before crashing at a motel.

Pharrell, who produced the song, also makes a cameo in the imaginative clip.

Due June 23, Ed’s sophomore album x also features production from Rick Rubin, Jeff Bhasker, Benny Blanco, Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid, and Jake Gosling.

Pharrell Performs on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’

Pharrell and Jimmy Kimmel

Pharrell Williams has been on a whirlwind promo tour. His latest stop was “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Wednesday, where he served as a guest and musical performer. The Neptunes hitmaker discussed Kimmel’s cameo in the “Happy” video and getting a call from the King of Pop.

“He was eating popcorn in my ear,” said Pharrell of the late legend. “And that’s when I knew it was him.”

Pharrell didn’t get a chance to record with Michael, but they did take meetings. MJ’s manager said he wanted a song like Noreaga’s “Superthug” when Pharrell was thinking along the lines of “Rock With You.”

Pharrell and Jimmy also hit the streets of Hollywood to see which one of them could get the most twofies (selfies with two people) as possible with random pedestrians in 30 seconds.

Plus, he hit the outdoor stage to perform his latest G I R L single “Come Get It Bae.”

Rap-Up TV: JoJo Talks New Label, Album, & Working with Pharrell

It’s a new day for JoJo. After exiting her deal with Blackground Records late last year, the singer has signed with Atlantic and is back in the studio working on her long-awaited third album.

“It’s so refreshing to be at a new home and have a different experience. It’s so exciting!” she told Rap-Up TV after headlining L.A.’s Broccoli Festival on Saturday. “I wake up every day having energy in places that I thought I didn’t anymore. I just feel so encouraged and optimistic, and I haven’t felt that way in so long.”

Earlier this year, she began recording the follow-up to 2006′s The High Road. “The goal is just to come up with the strongest body of work and really represent everything that has been culminating within me for the last however many years.”

She is bringing her vision to life with help from Da Internz, Gino Barletta (“Disaster”), and Noisecastle III, as well as some up-and-coming producers.

“It’s just been so long since I’ve released an album that really what I wanna bring is just quality,” said JoJo. “I wanna bring big songs. I want them to touch a wide range of people and I really want it to represent my very best work. I’m really not thinking about what other people are doing. I’m thinking about representing my personal best, delivering powerful vocals, and being honest and as raw as possible.”

She also plans to get in the studio with Pharrell Williams, who enlisted her for “Freq” off his album G I R L. “I’m such a fan of that album and the fact that my little vocals are on it, I’m super happy,” she said.

But for now, she’s enjoying her freedom. “I just wanna work harder than ever and not sleep at all. This is what I’ve been waiting for and I just wanna seize the friggin’ moment.”
