Rap-Up TV: R. Kelly Praises Chris Brown, Considers Jay Z Reunion

R. Kelly returns to the charts with his 15th top 10 album Black Panties, which debuted at No. 4 this week. In the final part of his interview with Rap-Up TV, the R&B veteran speaks out about some of his famous collaborators and peers including fellow Chicago native Kanye West.

“A lot of people didn’t believe in Kanye, a lot of people didn’t believe in me. He’s a genius in his own right and he’s on top now,” said Kellz, who worked with Yeezus on Cruel Summer‘s “To the World.” “That’s why I know if we got together again on one of these days in that studio, some magic is gonna happen again.”

While he and Jay Z had a fallout after their Best of Both Worlds albums, he is not ruling out another collaboration. “In this business, man, you just never know,” he said. “It happened once, it happened again. You just never know.”

One thing that is certain are more “Trapped in the Closet” episodes. “I got 50-something chapters in the studio just waiting to be shot and then there’s more to come. It’s just one of those forever things, man.”

A “Trapped in the Closet” movie is already being written along with a Broadway show and a book.

When it comes to today’s stars, Kellz has a lot of respect for Chris Brown. “I don’t look at Chris Brown as an R&B guy. He’s a superstar, hands down. It doesn’t matter. He’s music. I don’t put him in a category ’cause he’s got that Michael Jackson thing on him.”

So what does he find himself listening to when he’s riding in the car? “I will listen to Jay Z, I listen to Trey Songz, I listen to Dream, I listen to Ciara, Rihanna, Destiny’s Child, and some Beyoncé stuff.”

Kid Ink Enlists Chris Brown, Pusha T, & Elle Varner for ‘My Own Lane’

My Own Lane

Out with the old, in with the new. After heating up radio with his Chris Brown-assisted single “Show Me,” Kid Ink will kick off 2014 with his major label debut My Own Lane.

Due January 7, the 13 tracks include features from Pusha T, Elle Varner, MGK, August Alsina, Maejor Ali, and Brown, who appears twice.

The deluxe edition adds four including “Bad Ass” with Meek Mill and Wale and “Bossin’ Up” featuring A$AP Ferg.

My Own Lane is my struggle, because I came from a producer background and I listen to all kinds of different music and don’t really limit myself to what I do,” the L.A. rapper told Hot 93.7. “There’s so many different areas I’m pulling from, I have to just create my own lane.”

The album will be available for pre-order on December 17.

New Music: U.G.L.Y. – ‘DMT’ [EP]

DMT

With Sevyn Streeter out the gate, Chris Brown introduces CBE’s next act, U.G.L.Y. (Under Greatness Lies You). The electro-bass trio, made up of Mijo, Braxton Olita, and female singer Stormi Henley, steps into the spotlight with their genre-bending debut EP DMT.

The six tracks, produced and written by the trio themselves, combine elements of R&B, reggae, punk, and electronic music. They nod to ’90s alternative on “Light One Up” and mix R&B with gritty bass on “FairyTale.”

“Think of it as a festival experience. You’re going to hear the best of each genre in one place,” says Braxton, while Mijo adds, “We wanted to start a movement or culture for creativity and positivity. The idea is that you can do anything you want. Be as epic and as fly as you want to be.”

Rap-Up TV: Sevyn Streeter Talks EP, Chris Brown’s Advice, & Kelly Rowland

Alicia Keys, Ariana Grande, and Tamar Braxton are just some of the superstars who have called on Sevyn Streeter for her songwriting skills, but now the rising star is making a name for herself beyond the credits.

On Tuesday, the 27-year-old singer released her debut EP Call Me Crazy, But… The former RichGirl member, who is signed to Chris Brown’s CBE label, caught up with Rap-Up TV during the L.A. stop of her tour with K. Michelle to discuss her first solo offering.

“It’s basically talking about the cycle of a relationship, the ups, the downs, the good, the bad, the ugly,” she said of the seven tracks.

She sparked rumors of a romance after co-starring with Tristan “Mack” Wilds in the video for “It Won’t Stop.” “We had a really good time,” said Sevyn. “I felt like I was getting my acting chops on a little bit. He’s such a great actor.”

Chris Brown not only signed Sevyn, but he’s also been hands-on with her project. “He’s very involved. I swear I can call and ask him for advice about anything,” she said. “It doesn’t matter, it could be a video, it could be choreography or whatever, he’s always gonna have some kind of advice for me.”

She has written songs for his upcoming album X including “Fine China” and the title track. “I’m not quite sure what other records are on there, but I wrote some more so let’s have our fingers crossed.”

Sevyn recently had the honor of performing one of the songs she wrote, “Gone,” with Kelly Rowland at BET’s “Black Girls Rock!” “It was a dream come true. Honestly she didn’t have to do that and she’s a sweetheart for that and I just can’t thank her enough,” said Sevyn, who admits that the two share a resemblance.

So who’s left on her wish list of collaborators? “I would love to write for Beyoncé,” said Sevyn. “I would love to write some stuff for Usher, Jennifer Lopez, Miguel, the list goes on.”
