Rap-Up TV: Dawn Richard Hints at Danity Kane Reunion

Is a Danity Kane reunion in the works? The rumor mill has been all abuzz about the return of the platinum girl group. Four out of five members—Dawn Richard, Aubrey O’Day, Shannon Bex, and Aundrea Fimbres (D. Woods was absent)—were photographed having lunch together in May and DanityKane.com has been relaunched with a countdown leading up to tomorrow’s MTV VMAs. Dawn hinted at things to come during an exclusive interview with Rap-Up TV.

“The countdown seems like it’s marking the beginning of the VMAs, doesn’t it? Like the opening of it, doesn’t it?” she said.

The group released two No. 1 albums on Bad Boy Records, but was disbanded by Diddy following the release of 2008′s Welcome to the Dollhouse. Five years later, they were able to put their differences aside and come together again.

“I’m having a blast with having them back in my life,” said Dawn, who is working on her solo album Blackheart. “We’re back at a place where we can speak to each other and hang with each other. It’s been a long time since we just sipped some wine and been like, ‘What up girl?’”

They hashed out their issues during the lunch meeting. “That meeting was five hours of ‘For real, you did that? That was why you did that? Oh, you’re not a bitch. I hated you,’” said Dawn. “It was beautiful to find out that we were stupid in thinking the things that we thought.”

She was surprised to see all the positive reaction to their reunion. “I don’t know how people could even remember us, let alone even care enough to be that excited and none of it was negative.”

So is the group, who was brought together on MTV’s “Making the Band 3,” plotting another reality show? “I guess you’ll have to wait and see,” teased Dawn.

New Music: Dawn Richard f/ JoJo – ‘Valkyrie (Art of War Remix)’

JoJo and Dawn Richard

Dawn Richard dropped her two Blackheart singles “Judith” and “Valkyrie” earlier this week, and now she surprises her Hearts with the remix to “Valkyrie.” The R&B powerhouse joins forces with Rap-Up favorite JoJo on the Noisecastle III-produced record, which also features vocals from Deonte.

“This record is special in many ways,” said Dawn. “I wanted to do a collab with a female to show the essence of the record. A sort of female anthem. There is a cockiness in the record. It was only right to ask JoJo just because we are kindred spirits. I wanted her to feature on a record people wouldn’t expect her to do. I didn’t want the typical. The result is a masterpiece.”

New Music: Dawn Richard – ‘Judith’ + ‘Valkyrie’

Judith and Valkyrie

The Blackheart era continues. Following the buzz record “Meteors,” Dawn Richard debuts two new singles off her upcoming sophomore album. The Danity Kane singer allowed her fans to pick their favorite in an online contest, but instead of choosing one song, she put both on iTunes.

Dawn teams with producer Cronos on “Judith,” which was inspired by the Gustav Klimt painting “Judith.” “It’s the story of a painting that is priceless and quite iconic being forgotten after being hung in a home too long,” she said.

The Deonte-assisted “Valkyrie” was written by Dawn and produced by Noisecastle III. “I wanted a record that was packed with confidence, a sort of cocky reminder that you will remember my mark,” said Dawn.

Both songs are now available on iTunes.

Single Cover: Dawn Richard – ‘Valkyrie’

Just days after revealing the cover art for “Judith,” Dawn Richard unveils the artwork for “Valkyrie.” The singer rocks gold antlers and a gold mask on her head in the striking image, photographed by Solmaz Saberi.

Dawn held an online contest for her fans to choose between “Judith” and “Valkyrie” as the new single off her upcoming sophomore album Blackheart. “Valkyrie” was written by Dawn and produced by Noisecastle III.

“I wanted a record that was packed with confidence, a sort of cocky reminder that you will remember my mark,” said Dawn. “In Norse mythology, valkyries also known as choosers of the fallen, decided the fate of soldiers in battle once they died.”

“I thought the impression and mark they left on a soldier’s life was incredible,” she explained. “‘In the end you will remember me’ is what I felt they said as they chose the soldier’s fate. I want to leave the same imprint with my art and my music. In the artwork, the horns signify the bravery, strength, and power that existed in the valkyries.”

Dawn will reveal the winning song on iTunes on August 19.

In the midst of reunion rumors, Danity Kane’s official website has been updated to show a countdown, which ends on August 25 at 9 p.m. EST, the same day and time as the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. Will the girls reunite at the VMAs?
