New Music: Elle Varner – ‘One Love’

One Love

J. Cole is not the only one using his voice to spark change. In light of the Mike Brown shooting, Elle Varner has released her peaceful protest anthem “One Love,” inspired by “all that’s going on in the world.”

She shares a message of love and unity on the DJ Dahi production. “Imagine no one needing guns all at once, impossible maybe / But we’ve never tried it / The whole world in silence / Respecting each other, our gods, and our brothers, killin’ with kindness.”

“Over the past few tumultuous days I have prayed long and hard for Mike Brown’s family, the people of Ferguson, and the families of many others we have lost due this horrific death pattern,” said Elle, who is readying her sophomore album Four Letter Word. “With persistence, strategy, and intellect, we can not only obtain justice for Mike Brown but we can effectuate changes that will prevent these things from happening again!”

Hear her spread the love.

Elle Varner Sings National Anthem at EBC Basketball Challenge

Elle Varner

Before the players took the court at Sunday’s EBC America Celebrity Basketball Challenge at Brooklyn’s Barclay Center, Elle Varner performed a soulful rendition of the National Anthem.

“I put some flavor on it. Everybody’s heard the song a million times, so I did my thing. I had fun,” she told TrueExclusives afterwards.

Earlier this month, the R&B songstress debuted her new single “Don’t Wanna Dance” featuring A$AP Ferg. Her sophomore album 4 Letter Word is due this fall.

“I’m making a very positive shift in my career with this album,” she said. “It’s all about artistry and being authentic and the message. It’s more soulful in the sense that you feel it in different ways.”

New Music: Elle Varner f/ A$AP Ferg – ‘Don’t Wanna Dance’

Don't Wanna Dance

Elle Varner has been warming up for her sophomore album 4 Letter Word with songs including “Cold Case” and “See Me Tonight,” but she finally delivers the first single. The R&B darling grabs A$AP Ferg for the delightful “Don’t Wanna Dance.”

Over a sample of Kanye West’s “We Don’t Care,” she sings about a typical night out at the club with her girls. But instead of listening to the DJ play Weezy, she wishes she were at home with her loved one.

Ferg, who’s been collaborating with everyone from Ariana Grande to Haim, tells his lady to get back home so he can pamper her.

4 Letter Word is due this fall. “It’s an open letter. It’s my heart. It’s my feelings. It’s my growth,” Elle said of the follow-up to her 2012 debut Perfectly Imperfect. “I talked about a lot of the coming-of-age things that girls go through and now I’m a young woman and going through different stuff, so you’ll hear about it.”

Elle Varner Performs ‘Cold Case’ on ’106 & Park’

Elle Varner

All eyes were on Elle Varner when she visited “106 & Park” on Monday. The R&B songstress strut onto the stage in a short fringe dress, but she wasn’t always used to getting attention from guys.

“I’m still a dork,” said Elle, who was overweight in high school. “Sexy or not, I’m a sexy nerd.”

The BET Music Matters star is getting personal on her upcoming sophomore album 4 Letter Word.

“It’s an open letter. It’s my heart. It’s my feelings. It’s my growth,” she said of the follow-up to her 2012 debut Perfectly Imperfect. “I talked about a lot of the coming-of-age things that girls go through and now I’m a young woman and going through different stuff, so you’ll hear about it.”

She also coined her own style that she calls “trap jazz.”

“It’s the product of a girl who grew up listening to Ying Yang Twins and Ella Fitzgerald,” she said. “I like to keep the beat rocking, but I have those jazzy vocals. I can’t get away from that.”

Watch her performance of “Cold Case” below.

Little Do You Know

Elle Varner maintains the mystery on the latest installment in her #4LetterWord series. Following “Cold Case” and “See Me Tonight,” the R&B singer tries to escape reality on the symphonic “Little Do You Know.”

“Nothing’s as it seems / Seeing is believing / Unless it’s a magic show / Little do you know,” sings Elle, who has also recorded a remix to “Cold Case.”

The songs are a precursor to her sophomore album 4 Letter Word, which was executive produced by Pop & Oak.
